Most of us have been thinking that this would be Callum Wilson’s last season at Newcastle but the way he has come back into the side and scored two goals for us may change some minds.
Certainly, Eddie Howe is keen to keep the player next season.
Even though Wilson has had another injury-ravaged season he is still the second top joint goalscorer with Anthony Gordon with 11 goals, 10 of them in the Premier League.
Isak tops the list with 24 goals – 21 in the Premier League.
It was also Wilson’s 47th Premier League goal for Newcastle and one more PL goal will take him into second place above Peter Beardsley in the Newcastle Premier League goalscoring.
After the match, head coach Eddie Howe had these words to say about Callum, who was also at Bournemouth for 6 seasons with Howe:
“Write him off at your peril for sure because he comes back time and time again.”
“He’s a very motivated player and wants to do his very best at every moment. I’ve managed him for a very long time now and mentality wise I wouldn’t swap him.”
“He’s a monster, he’s got a focus and when he’s got a goal he’ll go for it.”
“We knew today was going to be difficult and highlighted really by the first 10 minutes,”
“We knew Burnley would come out firing and that the crowd would play a part in that, so really pleased with the reaction to that first 10 minutes.
“And then from the first goal onwards, I thought it was a really good display from us.”
“I thought confidence and strength is gradually returning to the group so it was a really good day for us.”
“We’ve got three games to go and we want to try and give our best in each game. We want to try and play with the energy and intensity we had today.”
“Our away form has been inconsistent, it’s really good to see us win on the road in such an impressive way.”
If Eddie Howe wants to keep Wilson for next season he should, and we can bring in a young striker to fortify the squad.
His goal against Sheffield United in the 5-1 was superb, and it was a good opportunist goal he scored to put Newcastle 1-0 up on Saturday at Burnley.
Wilson has played 107 games for Newcastle with 48 goals and 11 assists, since signing a four-year contract for around £20M in September 2020.
His contract has just over a year to run and don’t be surprised if he gets a one-year extension in the summer so we could still get a transfer fee from him if he leaves next summer.
On the other hand, because he’s given such good service he may simply become a free agent next summer, assuming he stays for one more season.
We remain 6th in the league table with Manchester United able to go one point above us if they can win at Crystal Palace tonight.
What do you think?

Comment #201Onana is such a strange goalkeeper, sometimes has a fantastic game making top quality saves all match, but more often than not makes a howler of making saves.
Take nothing away from the goals Palace scored, but Olises first he scuffs it and it goes in slow motion into the corner, Mateta beats him near post and Olises second is basically in the middle of the goal and he somehow manages to dive yet still get nowhere near it.
Never seen a goalkeeper quite like him.

Comment #202Personally I’d say that the stadium will go up to approximately 68k capacity which is up there with the biggest and only second biggest behind the dump which is old Trafford which is falling down that’s capacity is 74k.
68k would be more than enough IMO with 16k extra attendance to what we have now.

Comment #203Onana is not an intelligent footballer apparently, it’s why he loses focus and concentration so easily which leads to making rash decisions and howlers which he does a lot. His confidence can evaporate very easy making him even worse. Which happens with anyone tbf…
I remember reading the above last season.

Comment #204Just out of interest does anyone know how many Irish Mags come over for a typical game.
Just read the article in the Mag.
Would imagine the flights are from Dublin and Belfast.
Been on the Belfast flight. 35 minutes. Down the ramp. Onto the Metro and into the Toon.

Hoping to get there but had a hip replacement op last Thursday and I think it might be touch and go.
Is Strawberry Place open to traffic 2hrs before KO? If so I could get dropped off and hobble into Shearers on crutches. I’d defo need a seat keeping as standing for a couple of hours isn’t an option.
If I do come and depending on my mobility I might watch the game in Shearers with my wife and if so there would be two tickets going for the Platinum Club.

Comment #207According to the Mail:
“Newcastle are said to be interested in Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, but they will face competition from Manchester Utd, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool for the £60m rated forward,”
Their article also states that we are interested in Aaron Ramsdale and defenders Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo. Out of all the above names the 2 I think we will go for are the last 2 on a free. Olise is a great player and with a very high ceiling and Ramsdale is a quality keeper. However I can’t se us blowing £110m on those 2. Our targets lay elsewhere IMO.

Comment #208On the back of my post #207 that sanjay (knows his stuff) has posted a great article about which players NUFC may be interested in for RW and gives an overview of each player. Good information from Sanjay:

I’m not actually sure we’ll end up with any of those wingers listed.
Olise would be a big wedge of the budget i’d imagine as we could get dragged into a bidding war.
Neto is not what we need, as he’s always getting injured and would continue to with the style we play.
Mbeumo I can’t see Brentford letting go, as they’re almost definitely be losing Toney already. So it would take a massive offer to tempt them.
Nico Williams is probably the most realistic as I think he has a £43m release clause or something. We’d face competition but could be possible.
I think all are probably unlikely and we’ll sign someone not linked to us, similar to the Tonali deal, Isak was done quickly, Bruno etc etc. Think our main targets are usually kept extremely quiet.

Comment #210There have been noises about NUFC being interested in that Morgan Whittaker who is a very exciting prospect from Plymouth. Apparently he has a very good professional attitude that would fit in very well with the rest of the squad and Eddie’s attitude expectations.
Then there were the rumours of Johan Bakayoko from PSV who is championed by many to be the next big thing out of Belgium.
Then where does Minteh come into it all? He has had a stellar season with Feyenoord and looks the part, does he have another loan spell away or do we bring him back to prove what he can do? If NUFC do bring him back and go for another RW (whoever that may be) then that will surely mean the end of the road for miggy. When he does go, I’ll have so many find memories of the lad. Love the lads attitude and work ethic, he must be a manager dream to manage. I’d sad to see him go but there is no room for sentiment in football. We have to keep improving and that means improving players year on year as part of our continuous improvement and growth. It’s gonna be an exciting summer transfer window that’s for sure and I’m convinced that we will send out a huge message to the EPL and Europe as to what’s in store.

#209 good post and you make total sense (as per). I also feel we will go out and get a Bruno, Isak, Tonali type signing where it’s out the blue and was never in the picture. We may also do a Botman where we hang our hat on the player and be relentless in getting that player.
Whatever happens we trust our clubs process as it’s been faultless thus far with who we’ve brought in. Other clubs like man u et al most look at our blue print and think ok Mr Ashworth can you replicate that please. Because they couldn’t afford another Antony (£100m was daylight robbery :oops) )

Comment #214Really starting to boil my pi$$ people talking about Isak and Bruno leaving, it’s bad enough from other fans without our own keep bringing it up. Bruno has just bought a £4M house ffs, why would you do that if you planned to leave in the summer. Do you honestly think he gives a foo# about collecting the £10K rent a month on that as an investment and why would Isak leave, he’s two years in to a six year deal and nobody has got the £130M we’d surely want, do people like just talking tosh for the sake of it?

I had thought about magic for both of my tickets.
He could sit with his mate and clinth could have his mates ticket.
In fact, if magic is happy with that he can have them and I’ll watch the match in Shearers. Let him know via discord.

I’d agree on Isak. I don’t see anyone offering the type of money it would take for us to sell. A player of that quality an age, you’d be asking £120 mil minimum.
Bruno is still a tough one. The house buy makes me think he’s settled and doesn’t want to leave. There are only two clubs in the country who realistically offer him hope of a title next season (Arsenal and City). At City does he get in over Rodri or KDB, probably not, and at Arsenal as much as he’d start there, they are still second favourites behind City to win anything. Only really Madrid or PSG abroad could afford him and I doubt he’s want back in the French League and I think Madrid would have other priorities for the money.
