Newcastle Have Huge Opportunity To Finish 6th Top This Season

Against a good and in-form Crystal Palace team at Selhurst Park Stadium last night, Manchester United again imploded and went down 4-0, and their defense looked hopeless.

With Newcastle back to full strength with Isak, Gordon, and Wilson all fit, the chances are we can beat Manchester United away a week tomorrow night and further our claims to finish 6th top.

And any further lapses from Tottenham, who have lost their last 4 league games and Newcastle could even catch Spurs, but that’s doubtful at best – but possible.

In those 4 previous games, Newcastle captured 3 wins and 9 points, so we have gained 9 points on Tottenham over the last 4 league games.

If Newcastle win our last 3 games or even get 7 points, then it looks like we will finish 6th – because of our much superior goal difference.

That’s whatever Manchester United and Chelsea do over their final 3 games of the season.

Here are the league standings at the moment.

Premier League Table 2023-2024

PositionTeamPlayedWonLostDrawnGDPoints
5Tottenham38201261366
6Chelsea38181191463
7Newcastle38181462360
8Man United3818146-160
9West Ham38141310-1452

So the final 3 games of the season are crucial.

And it will be close to a miracle if the boys can finish 6th top and it would be a testament to Eddie Howe’s coaching abilities, given all the injuries we have had this season.

What do you think?

Lee I’m a huge fan of Kelly as I’ve said a few times on here. We don’t have a good record with injuries or injury management bit you’d still want him at nufc. Pace to burn, decent athlete, good cross on him if left back, and Eddie knows him.

Casey who said Bruno would leave to go to Arsenal or PSG is now saying Bruno is reluctant to go to the Gooners…

    Such a whopper…

He replied to someone saying if he was 24 and not 28 he’d be staying but he wants to win this and that blah blah blah…

    Bruno is 26 for clarification.

To think some look up to this bluffer

To think other sets of fans laughed at us for getting knocked out of the group stage and finishing bottom but then you see the two top teams of that group in a CL semi final against each other and to think we were robbed and PSG should of been down and out.

How things could of been a lot different

Things really could have so easily been different. Top four and deep in all Cup competitions, very definitely on, had we simply had an average season in terms of the time our better players being on the pitch. Oh well. Take it on the chin and roll on of course. Next season we’ll better show our true worth. We’ll be a proper threat in all comps, barring the very unlikely event of lightning striking twice.

Exclusive update on Benjamin #Sesko: The release clause in the Slovenian’s contract, valid from this summer, is performance-based. In the winter, the amount was still €50m. Due to his good performances during the second half of the season, the release clause has now risen to €65m. The amount depends on playing time, goals and assists. In the maximum case, the sum can rise to €70m-€75m – depending on Sesko’s last two games of the season for Leipzig. Top Premier League clubs are keeping a close eye on the 20-year-old striker.

If you did not already know, players who are out of contract this summer are:
    Loris Karius – Goalkeeper
    Paul Dummett – Centre-Back
    Kell Watts – Centre-Back
    Jeff Hendrick – Midfielder
    Matt Ritchie – Winger

Only three are regularly on the bench and with a fully fit squad would not need replacing. Although they have good character and experience, they make way for others to come into the squad.

Chelsea are looking to off load 22yo Albanian striker Armando Broja, he would be an ideal candidate for nufc. However I think he has suffered this season from not regularly starting and it would be the same if he came to us.

This is from Sanjay who speaks so much sense a lot of the time on the Lloyd Kelly deal. You can see why Eddie is going for him:

“ Lloyd Kelly is a player that I love, and I’ve been talking about him for the best part of 3 years now.

He’s got great recovery pace, is competent with the ball, strong aerially, and by all accounts is a leader too.

He solves issues in our squad both now and in the future. While Botman is out, he gives us another left-footed CB option apart from Burn, while either can also play at LB.

And when Botman in back starting again, he effectively becomes a replacement for Burn as he starts to age.

A player who can play LB when we need that asymmetric shape, extra height and extra physicality – and also a competent ball-playing LCB as a backup to Botman.

It makes so much sense from a squad planning perspective. His injury record is a worry, but hopefully when used as a squad player, it’ll be less of an issue.

If he signs, it’s a great move for #NUFC.”

    Get him signed 🙂

I just hope Kelly doesn’t spend his four or five years here with 50% of his time on tye treatment table. I don’t think being a ‘squad’ player has any revelance, players with his kind of injury record, as we’ve seen with Wilson don’t even have to be playing 90 minutes regularly to get crocked. He can just as likely pull up in training as he can get crocked in a 50/50 tackle.

Dummett has a worse injury record.

    Kelly is better than Dummett.

Therefore it’s an upgrade and makes the team stronger, for free too.

    Seems very sensible business 🙂

    Adamn_92,
So why not find a player who has no injury history, that is a terrible example. I just hope he remains injury free, if he carries on like he is missing half the games then it’s an uttey pointless signing. If his sole purpose is to be a ‘squad’ player and allowed the first eleven to be rested then how can you do that if when needed most he’s not fit.

Because Kelly is free and can cover center back and left.

So we still have Botman, Schar, Burn, Lascelles, Hall, Tino, Krafth, Alex Murphy.

So replacing someone like Ritchie or Dummett with Kelly in a no-brainer on a free to make the squad stronger, even with an iffy injury record.

It leaves money available to potentially sign a much stronger young center half, or focus on other areas that will cost a decent wedge, like we’re apparently after a right winger. Then if we go for a goalkeeper and young striker, that won’t be cheap either.

So saving money with a free transfer is a win-win regardless if their injury record isn’t amazing.

Is anyone starting off elsewhere before Shearers because im thinking of going to The Centurian early doors.

How come there seems to be plenty of spare tickets kicking about on a matchday, judging by the amount of spare tickets being handed around by fellow bloggers it seems games are not being sold out.

Lloyd Kelly seems to be in the bag by all accounts, a free transfer for an above average PL defender is good business, a bit of concern about his injury record though, but he is certainly an upgrade on Dummet as a squad player.
He has the pace we lack , very important.
