Arsenal managed to keep up their title challenge this afternoon with a narrow 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford and they did Newcastle a favor today.
It means that Manchester United remain 3 points behind Newcastle with a worse goal difference.
Premier League Table 2023-2024
Position | Team | Played | Won | Lost | Drawn | GD | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
5 | Tottenham | 38 | 20 | 12 | 6 | 13 | 66 |
6 | Chelsea | 38 | 18 | 11 | 9 | 14 | 63 |
7 | Newcastle | 38 | 18 | 14 | 6 | 23 | 60 |
8 | Man United | 38 | 18 | 14 | 6 | -1 | 60 |
9 | West Ham | 38 | 14 | 13 | 10 | -14 | 52 |
That means even if we lose at Old Trafford on Wednesday night we will still be above the Old Trafford side on goal difference.
The real threat now is Chelsea who have found some good form recently.
Manchester United play Newcastle at home on Wednesday night then Brighton away next Sunday.
Chelsea play at Brighton on Wednesday night and then at home to Bournemouth next Sunday.
Newcastle play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday and then we are way at Brentford next Sunday.
So there you have it – it will be important that we don’t lose at Old Trafford, but two wins will clinch 6th place and European Football for Newcastle next season.
Howay the Lads!!

What do you think?

Comment #161Interesting that Brighton will have a real effect on sixth.
They’re not a bad team on their day.
We could all conceivably be on 57 before the final day, who’s going to hit 60?
Of course, one could win them all, but I don’t think so.
Chelsea could’ve easily lost to forest, forest hit the woodwork three times and missed a sitter too.

Comment #166Good morning all, what a lovely start to the day, the sun is shining…
I think Brighton will do us a favour against chelsea. I also believe we will get at least a draw against man u. They seemed to be right up for it mind against arsenal yesterday. But it’s their defence again it looked very fragile and with the likes of Gordon, Isak Barnes and Wilson (he will be fit) we can really exploit them.
Let’s also not forget ‘good always triumphs over evil’ 🙂
Have a great day all.

That video of the rain coming through the roof at Old Rusty Trafford is crazy. They spend all this crazy money on players. They need to fix that roof. That’s a serious safety concern or even breach to allow that as it’s been reported for ages it’s decrepit state…
Water findings its way through a structure like that can really damage it. Structural damage is serious when it effects it’s integrity. man u need structural engineers on this and quick. They can’t wait for the tax payer to pay for it. Aye OT is falling apart at the seems. What a bloody shame for them.

Comment #168Man u did seem to put up a bit more a fight against Arsenal, but it never really felt as if they were going to score or get anything from the match. Their defence with Casemiro and Evans at the back is absolutely shocking.
Gordon, Isak and either Murphy/Miggy on the right should have a field day. Just start runs out wide and cut inside behind either of those 2 in the center and you should be golden. As they aren’t going to catch you either.
If they have any sense, even though they’re at home, they’ll probably have their defence sit deep to try and stop that from happening. Still think we’ll be able to catch them out though. Tino has bombing forward in recent games too and should get some joy as there’s no chance Garnacho is going to track him all the way.

JohnJ,
“Was great to meet you finally. I’m 5ft 10” mate so not lanky, no a short fella just in between mate”
Snap I’m 5’ 10” anarl! From your avatar you look really tall but perhaps your golf swing magnifies your height?
“It was difficult to chat in that bar as it’s noisy I think you were struggling to hear people.”
Regarding my hearing I think I knacked it back in my days in the Motor Trade.
I wear hearing aids that are a great help in a quieter environment but in noisy environments the background noise is horrendous and makes hearing very difficult indeed. I’m interested in what folk have to say (especially about Newcast United) so it can be very frustrating on my part!
BTW Fenham I’m sorry you have spats with Munster – I’ve never had any trouble with him at all in fact if I’m ever blessed with another trip over the Irish Sea he’s going to buy me a pint of Guinness and there’s no way I could turn that down!
I have 48% Scots & 35% Irish in my genes (no offence to any Scots on here) but it’s Ireland that I love most of all! Both are beautiful counties but I really believe it’s the Irish in me that brings a yearning to be back home again.
I even married the daughter of a Belfast man and my best man was also from Belfast. My daughter has an Irish passport! I would also have an Irish passport but a maternal Great Grandma is too far back to qualify! Ah well….

Comment #175Hope we stick with Tino and Hall in the fullback positions on Wednesday now that Trippier is back. Tinos pace will be useful to nullify Garnacho and he has the nergy to run up and down all game. Trippier is more likely to be caught upfield and not recover fast enough.
Also Hall looks better and better each game, so think he needs to play the remaining games to cement being the starter left back next season.

Like a few others I didn’t think Man U were that bad last night.
Yes, it was diabolical lazy defending from Casimero that led to the goal but in the 2nd half especially Man U had Arsenal on the back foot for long periods.
On another day one, or more, of Garnacho’s umpteen crosses would have produced a goal and if the game had ended in a draw I don’t think it would have been unfair on Arsenal and – if Fernandez had been playing – he would have made a big difference.
Man U are getting belters of criticism, a lot of it justified, but Arsenal could still only score one with Casemiro and Evans in central defence.
If we start off slow on Wednesday as we did again against Brighton, and concede first, Man U and the crowd (who I thought stuck with the team last night) will have their tails right up – and that’s when the undoubted talent they have in the team could really shine.
This is a game where experience of big matches could be crucial and that’s why I’d start with Tripps and also Jo. Tino and Anderson have done really well but this is a match for experience and strength, not just talent.
IMO that means Tripps and Jo start.

A Trippier just coming back from injury will get destroyed by Garnacho’s pace.
Especially with Trippier loving to push up and gets caught out leaving space behind.
I get what you’re saying about experience, but i think this is the wrong game and oppononent to bring him back into the starting 11 from injury.

I agree with your comments on the experience selections so if Tripps does come in do you think he would go Tino or Hall at LB as neither has really put a foot wrong since coming in?
If Schar is fit I think he may repeat the Spurs game & revert back to a 5 at the back in the hope of getting Gordon isolated with Casimero

I’ve been pondering that too, about Tino and Hall. Tino seems to have got the nod usually when Tripps plays but, as Adam said, Hall has looked better and better each game and I really like what he brings attacking wise. He did seem to be suffering from cramp in the last game, towards the end though, possibly due to the heat and lack of playing time this season, so maybe EH will go for Tino

If you always dropped a slower FB when a pacy winger is his oppo you’d be playing hokey kokey with team selection on a far too basic level.
Marking a player isn’t just about pace, it’s about positioning and tackling.
My point on playing Tripp’s is that this is a match where big game experience and leadership on the pitch could be crucial. It just so happens that the one player we have who has that in spades is Tripps. It’s unfortunate that Tino plays in the same position BUT this is what management decisions at the top level are about. For example; if we go one down, need a gee up or quick tactical change who will manage that better; Tripps or Tino?
On Tripps bombing forward; simple, he doesn’t, he sticks close to Garnacho and we also try to cut the supply off to him. With Murpjy wide right we also have the ideal speed merchant to track back and help Tripps plus bomb forward if we win the ball or intercept passes to Garnacho.
Again as well as Anderson has done, Jo is on another level and he is also a big threat from dead balls and corners against that patchy Man U defence.
I’d stick with Hall at LB, not replace him with Tino who isn’t the same player in that position.
As always, it’s a game of opinions, but at the supreme professional level of the PL small changes can have big effects – positive and negative.
I just think Eddie has a couple of very big calls to make on team selection for the Man game.

I do get the points your saying. But my main point was bringing in a Trippier just back from injury. He only got 5 minutes Saturday. It’s not simply a case of not playing him because he’s against a pacey winger.
Bringing him back in from an injury to stick to a fast tricky winger, maybe isn’t the beest time to bring him back to the starting 11.
Also if we just keep him back, ok that may work, but Tino has the energy and pace to not just sit back. He can bomb forward and has the pace and energy to recover and get back quick enough.
Murphy/Miggy and Tino on that side, is more likely to pin back Garnacho and Dalot, as they know we have 2 fast players who can break down their side. Trippier, means Garnacho especially is more likely to stay up top to not only pin Trippier back, but to break fast and exploit his pace and space in behind, knowing if he beats him, he isn’t catching him.
I totally get your points and needing experience, but this just isn’t the right game for Trippier to come back into the starting 11 IMO. Not just for the fact that he’s up against a fast winger.

Comment #191Also think if things aren’t going well, bringing Trippier off the bench has a better chance of impacting the game positively, rather than bringing on Tino.
Trippier can rally the troops and have fresher legs to be able to go up and down the wing more. Plus if we call upon him, it’s likely because we are needing a goal, so won’t need to be as concerned about Garnacho on the counter, as we’ll want Trippier pushed up trying to create anyway as we chase the game.
(Not that I think we will be chasing the game, we’ll be winning) 🙂

Comment #197Howe’s European hopes on knife-edge
Newcastle’s 52,000-capacity home might not be the Premier League’s biggest ground or even its most up to date, but Roberto De Zerbi believes it is England’s No 1. “We played in a fantastic atmosphere,” said Brighton’s manager following Saturday’s 1-1 draw on Tyneside. “St James’ Park is incredible, it’s the best stadium in the Premier League.” Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian majority owners would rather like Eddie Howe’s team to be the division’s best on the pitch, too, but their hopes of Europa League qualification were dented slightly by a combination of Julio Enciso, Brighton’s exciting 20-year-old Paraguayan attacking playmaker, and De Zerbi’s players’ ability to wind down the clock by slowing the game to walking pace. Howe’s European hopes rest on Wednesday’s trip to Manchester United and Sunday’s to Brentford but it would be an awful shame if St James’ Park, AKA Newcastle’s “citadel on the hill”, does not stage European nights next season.
