After the disappointment of losing 3-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night and Chelsea beating Brighton away, both teams beneath us gained 3 points on Newcastle in the league table.
🙁
We are now 3 points behind Chelsea and level on points with Manchester United in 7th place (with 57 points) but above them on goal difference.
Manchester United are at Brighton on Sunday and Chelsea are home to Bournemouth.
Here are some comments Eddie Howe made about our final game at Brentford on Sunday – 4:00pm KO.
Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon’s fitness:
“We will wait and see how he is today. I’m not 100% sure as I sit here now exactly how he is. Certainly that tackle left a mark on him.”
On Lewis Hall’s development:
“I think for any player when you come to a new club, it’s natural there’s going to be a settling-in period. He’s done really well to commit and continue to commit and have consistency in his work, even when no doubt he was frustrated that things weren’t happening quicker than he’d wanted. “
“He did really well at Old Trafford and showed a lot of maturity. I’m delighted with where his game is at.”
On Wednesday’s performance at Old Trafford:
“I think we’ve had highlights and had some good performances but it’s summed up by Wednesday where I thought we played OK.”
“The performance generally was good, we created chances and we looked a good team but we weren’t ruthless enough to take the game away from our opponent.”
“For next year we have to get that away form right.”
On Callum Wilson”
“We anticipate he will be fit for Sunday.”
On Sunday’s game at Brentford:
“It’s a big last day for us, there’s no denying that. We go into the game knowing we have to do our part, which is try and win the game.”
“Then we’re in the hands of other clubs. The players are determined to finish on a high.”

What do you think?

Comment #41Would certainly have that Man City back up Goalie.
Seems like a real character as well.
Ramsdale. Would he be a back up to Pope or would Pope become second fiddle.
What’s the point of leaving The Arsenal as second choice to be second choice at NUFC.

Comment #42What was the difference between Dubravka, Darlowe and Woodman.
Different qualities but always thought that overall they were on a par.
Dubravka got the shirt as he had the bottle to say I’m the number one and delivered.
Woodman. Young he was unlucky when he got in.
Darlowe. Got in and then it was only a couple or three games before he messed up.
Of them all at least Woodman has gone all out to get 1st team football.
Don’t think right now any of Darlowe, Dubravka or for that matter Karius are even bothered about that.

Comment #43So if reports are true and I have to say IF.
Then why haven’t Newcastle done the deals yet with Kelly and Tosin. That rule is still in place right?
A pre-contract is an agreement between a player that club that commits to a move being made once the player’s current deal comes to a close.
This allows interested parties to line up recruitment business well before it is actually completed, with long-term planning put in place.
Said talks can be opened up to six months before the expiration of a previous agreement in alternative surroundings.
If this rule is still around then why haven’t we got both signed to a pre-contract?
Maybe the rule has changed and some on the site know if its still applies or not?

Comment #44It’s all rumours for now, but my guess IF Ramsdale signed, is that he would be number 1 as Popes shoulder injury is a concern. Similar attributes so would almost be a like for like swap. Which to be fair, if not for the question mark over Popes shoulder now, I wouldn’t be concerned in upgrading goalkeeper as a position. An upgrade on Dubravka, sure, which this would be as Pope would then take Dubs spot.
If I had to choose, I would go for Mamardashvili. But i’m not going to be overly concerned if it’s him or Ramsdale.
There are other areas that are more pressing to try and upgrade, such a young center back, right attacker, striker to replace Wilson and then depending on what outgoings we have will determine where else I think we need to upgrade.

Comment #45Messed up with Goalies early 2023.
Woodman had already gone, fair enough.
We let Dubravka come back from Man Utd. Supposedly went there for 1st team football. Yeah right. He was gonna put De Gea out of their team.
Darlowe goes out on loan. Why. What do we get out of that. Part of his wage paid.
Bad luck played a part yes. However, we go into the most important game we have played in 25 yrs with Goalies thus.
1 suspended
1 cup tied
1 out on loan
1 playing 1st game since whenever.
Saw Darlowe at half time at Wembley on the concourse. With older fella perhaps his Dad.
Had 2 foot long hot dogs and 2 bottles of coke.
Not a care in the world. Big smiles.
If that was me and I was missing that game cos I was on a ten bob loan to Hull City I would not have been able to go to the game.
Would have been devastated.
That’s probs why he is now a side show Goalie wherever he goes.

Yeah I think it depends on mentality Ramsdale might fancy that he’s better than Pope and can overtake him ?
In reality that’s how it should be at a big club you should have competition and fear for your place every season
Pope’s injury history and age would also be a worry for me now that’s twice the same injury now

We could already have the deals wrapped up but want to wait till the season ends ?
There’s also accounting things where we might not want to have them on the books till July 1st so it’s a new financial window

Comment #51Ramsdale is a far better keeper than Pope IMO, he has the same shot stopping stats, and he commands his 6 yard box very well just like Pope…The big difference is that he has a much better level of distribution than Pope does. It’s worth noting also that Ramsdale had a falling out with Arteta, who we all know is a right little prima Donna.
I don’t think Mamardashvili would be Eddie’s first choice for GK, I think Ramsdale and that he is EPL proven and still very young along with Ramsdale character would fit into the NUFC squad with ease would be an Eddie signing and he’d be a very decent one too.
We shall see as it looks like NUFC are definitely going to add a GK to the ranks with both Dubs and Karius leaving. I can see Pope getting used sparingly in cup competitions just so his shoulder isn’t placed under too much stress with 2 games a week.

Are you seriously complaining about Darlow going on loan, he’s now back up at a Championship club, not Bournemouth, Palace or Wolves. If we’d kept him you’d be complaining about the standard of keeper we’re keeping.

His best runs for us where when he had no competition for his place
When Dubs came back from injury he started to make mistakes and lost his place both times

Comment #63Keepers have got to be good with their feet these days. Ramsdale is decent but he’s no Ortega or Mamardashvilli and that could ultimately be worth another 10 points a season. Arteta realised this and got in Raya. Yes Ramsdale is younger but very much like for like with Pope, maybe slightly better with distribution but not top class which is what we should be aspiring to now.

Comment #68Also…Where have I stated I’m not all for Mamardashvili still?
That’s still the keeper I’d like most. But I’d still be happy enough with Ramsdale.
Whoever NUFC ever sign I’ll be all for said player as they will have been chosen properly and more than likely the right choice/decision made.
Nobody has a clue about who we’re signing yet as it’s all just speculation at this point.

Comment #70Aaron Ramsdale has almost certainly played his last game for Arsenal and an agreement has been reached for the goalkeeper join Newcastle in the summer transfer window.
However, Newcastle have jumped to the front of the queue for Ramsdale’s signature and Sky Sports’ James Green claims the out-of-favour shot-stopper has agreed a deal over a proposed switch to St James’ Park.
Speaking on Highbury Squad, he said: ‘I understand and I found out directly from the player’s agent that one of our players is off to Newcastle and a deal has been agreed.
‘It’s my understanding that Aaron Ramsdale has agreed to join Newcastle in the summer.
‘That’s come direct through speaking to somebody I’m very close with who is close with his agent and he says it’s done.
‘The deal is happening.’
