There are multiple reports today that Aaron Ramsdale has agreed to join Newcastle United in the summer.
Ever since Arsenal signed David Raya on loan from Brentford, on loan last summer, Ramsdale’s time has been limited between the posts for the Gunners.
After being the regular Arsenal goalkeeper after signing on from Sheffield United three years ago, he has played only 11 games in Arsenal’s packed schedule this season.
The player cost Arsenal £30M and was previously coached by Eddie Howe for a short period at Bournemouth.
The England goalkeeper (4 full caps) has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park this season.
The initial report on this came from Sky Sports News journalist James Green, who had this to say about the deal while speaking on Highbury Squad:
“I understand and I found out directly from the player’s agent that one of our players is off to Newcastle and a deal has been agreed,”
“It’s my understanding that Aaron Ramsdale has agreed to join Newcastle in the summer.”
“That’s come direct through speaking to somebody I’m very close with who is close with his agent and he says it’s done.”
“I don’t think it will come as a surprise to many Arsenal fans if I’m being honest.”
“I think the writing was on the wall, it was going to happen, he can’t sit there and be a backup goalkeeper he was too good for that.”
“He was always going to go on to pastures new and I saw a few reports, a few other journalists talking about a backup to Raya this week and what goalkeepers might come in.”
“The likes of Jason Steele at Brighton were mentioned and I think he’d actually be a very good number two.”
“The deal (to Newcastle) is happening.”
Ramsdale signed a new contract with the Gunners last summer after earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year for the previous season, but this season has turned everything upside down with the goalkeeper’s ambitions not being met.
Newcastle will need a new number two for next season since Loris Karius wants to move to the Italian League to be closer to his family.
And Martin Dubravka also has itchy feet and the Saudi League have shown interest in acquiring the Slovakian International this summer.
Dubravka’s contract expires next summer so we may even be able to get a transfer fee for him.
The news is that we will pay £15M for Ramsdale and if that is accurate that’s a good deal for Newcastle, especially from Arsenal.
Dubravka has played 163 games for Newcastle since signing for us back in 2018 on a loan deal initially for €500K from Sparta Prague, with an option to sign in the summer for €4.5M which Newcastle took up.

Comment #2Watching some youtube stuff it appears that most fans want us to get a new CB as 1st choice for new signings. Does Tosin fill that need?

The season may not be a complete loss. If Elliot Anderson or Emil Krafth score against Brentford, NUFC will break the record for the most number of goal scorers in a season.

Comment #4I would be interested to know what Ramsdale’s wage demands were and in comparison to Pope’s. As I do not think he is an upgrade, but coming from a ‘top 6’ team I think he will stretch our budget.

The Arsenal substitute isn’t an upgrade to Pope. He’s equally good, ok.
Concern with Pope, he may never be the same.

Comment #24You couldn’t make it up
The referee was correct not to award Newcastle a penalty during Wednesday’s defeat at Manchester United, says an independent panel.
Sofyan Amrabat stepped on the heel of Magpies winger Anthony Gordon as he ran into the box late in the first half, with United leading 1-0.
The hosts went on to win 3-2 and the incident, which Gordon said was “a clear penalty”, has now been reviewed by the Premier League’s Key Match Incident Panel.
How the hell do they come to that opinion.

Comment #28Refs Independent panel commenting on ref/Var performances.
Tragic
About as Independent as the Post Office managers or Water Utility managers.
None fit for purpose
Just protecting their own.
How about a panel from overseas with no vested interests
Or anyone who hasn’t got sight loss and understands the rules of football.

“Tonali shared how he had visited a factory where employees were working 10 hour days which helped him to appreciate how fortunate he was to have football in his life and to be able to recover from his ‘errors’.
Speaking on his addiction and recovery, Tonalid said: “To hide behind barriers is the problem. It’s never the solution. You have to talk and get help.
“My real wealth is not the millionaire contracts but being surrounded by people who love me and continue to show it daily. I have recently visited a factory and I could reflect on how many people work 10 hours a day to take a salary home.
“I understood precious things. One above all. If a worker loses his job, the whole family pays the consequences. This is why I think I am lucky. I made errors but I have lost nothing. Football is more tiring in England but there is less pressure. Whether you win or lose, you can still live your life.
“In Italy, often you can’t leave home when a game doesn’t go well. We must all grow together for the good of our football and society.”
Both Newcastle and the 24-year-old will now be hoping to put all of this behind them and look forward to what could be a very exciting season. Good on Tonali for fronting up to his issues, seeking help and speaking out on his battles.”

I’m sure the majority of posters, lurkers and occasional readers of the Blog would like to give Dr. Ed a good send off but, while we can all guess, no-one knows what the future holds!
While I don’t think the current situation with the Blog is down to posters transferring to Discord I do believe the last game of the season would be an opportunity to demonstrate the appreciation and affection the vast majority have for Dr. Ed.
Maybe tomorrow offers an opportunity for “everyone” to behave like adults for, perhaps, the last active game day of the Blog.
It’ll be interesting to see which poster(s) “fire the first shot” regardless of the potential occasion.
Whatever happens tomorrow or thereafter I have “mostly” enjoyed the best NUFC Blog available and will always be grateful to Dr. Ed and his Family for creating and maintaining it.

Totally agree. But as I have said before, VAR is perfect for machine learning and Artificial Intelligence. An AI VAR review would be essentially instantaneous, and based on the best decision making in tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of games. No human bias.
Also would like the off-side to be based on clear daylight between attacker and defender – no toenails.
