With Pope, Schar, and Joelinton back in the Newcastle team Newcastle made a good start to this game and scored three goals before halftime through Barnes (21 mins), Murphy (36 mins), and Isak, (38 mins).
But Anthony Gordon missed out with an Achilles injury, which is not thought to be serious.
Harvey Barnes headed home a Bruno Guimaraes’ delivery into the net, before local lad Sean Longstaff had a goal disallowed for offside.
Jacob Murphy then easily put Isak’s low cross to the far post past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 to Newcastle.
Then Newcastle’s top goalscorer for the season, Isak then scored his 21st PL goal, and, interestingly, that’s the first time since the man himself, Shearer, scored 21 in the 2003-2004 season.
We have a budding world-class striker in Isak if we can keep him on board.
But it was not all plain sailing for Newcastle and goals from Janelt (48 mins) and Wissa ( 70 mins) cut the lead to 3-2.
But Guimaraes scored Newcastle’s 4th goal after 77 mins to restore a two-goal lead and Newcastle ran out winners in our final game of a really difficult season – mainly through injuries and bad luck.
If Manchester City can beat Manchester United in next weekend’s FA Cup then we will qualify for the Europa League conference: if not we will have no European football next season.
Chelsea beat Bournemouth at home 2-1 to stay 3 points ahead of us and Manchester United beat Brighton 2-1 at home to finish level on points – 60 – with Newcastle.
It’s the first time we have ever finished above Manchester United in the Premier League and 85 goals is the most we have ever scored in the PL – more firsts for Eddie Howe and Newcastle.
What do you think?
