Newcastle Finish 7th With Good 4-2 Win – But Now Wait On Europa Conference Qualification

With Pope, Schar, and Joelinton back in the Newcastle team Newcastle made a good start to this game and scored three goals before halftime through Barnes (21 mins), Murphy (36 mins), and Isak, (38 mins).

But Anthony Gordon missed out with an Achilles injury, which is not thought to be serious.

Harvey Barnes headed home a Bruno Guimaraes’ delivery into the net, before local lad Sean Longstaff had a goal disallowed for offside.

Jacob Murphy then easily put Isak’s low cross to the far post past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 to Newcastle.

Then Newcastle’s top goalscorer for the season, Isak then scored his 21st PL goal, and, interestingly, that’s the first time since the man himself, Shearer, scored 21 in the 2003-2004 season.

We have a budding world-class striker in Isak if we can keep him on board.

But it was not all plain sailing for Newcastle and goals from Janelt (48 mins) and Wissa ( 70 mins) cut the lead to 3-2.

But Guimaraes scored Newcastle’s 4th goal after 77 mins to restore a two-goal lead and Newcastle ran out winners in our final game of a really difficult season – mainly through injuries and bad luck.

If Manchester City can beat Manchester United in next weekend’s FA Cup then we will qualify for the Europa League conference: if not we will have no European football next season.

Chelsea beat Bournemouth at home 2-1 to stay 3 points ahead of us and Manchester United beat Brighton 2-1 at home to finish level on points – 60 – with Newcastle.

It’s the first time we have ever finished above Manchester United in the Premier League and 85 goals is the most we have ever scored in the PL – more firsts for Eddie Howe and Newcastle.

Saturday 1st February we’re back at St James Park when we entertain Fulham. This 3pm kick off game marks the start of another busy period with 3 games in 8 days. The cut off for this game is 12:45pm on the day and Eddie’s presser should be on Friday at 9:30 am.

    AGM,

I don’t know if you seen my post prior to Southampton game, but I don’t think my point was added after the Wolves game. Not that I am competitive at all, but if you could check that would be great or I might have to speak to my solicitor. 🙂

You had Longstaff in your pick for the Wolves game, he wasn’t in the starting 11.

Haddaway and Shyte, excellent choice for any of your legal requirements.

    🙂

Right lads, here’s the updated table. I hadn’t realised that the Discord link is time limited. If I post the table from my spreadsheet I cannot format it so it looks tidy. I can do it so that it looks like this https://www.nufcblog.com/2024/05/18/multiple-reports-that-newcastle-have-agreed-terms-with-england-goalkeeper/comment-page-6/#comment-3064021 with the scores directly under your name or continue with the link, https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1158518418027335770/1335325631419781232/image.png?ex=679fc267&is=679e70e7&hm=681f6f8e554b0ebd049f6606738ed00a95b51629ffac426f3648c8ac05cdf9af& Which would you prefer?

Arsenal at home for a Wednesday 8 pm kick off is just the tonic we need. 90 minutes (or so) away from a trip to Wembley and we already lead 2-0. Cut off for this game is 6pm. Eddie’s presser should be 9:30 tomorrow morning on the app and I’ll post links to re-runs when they appear.

Busy today, I’ll update the table when I can. Danny B1 on Discord was the only winner. But we have a quick turnaround with a trip to Birmingham on Saturday in the FA Cup. KO is 5:45 pm and the game is live on BBC 1, iPlayer and the BBC Sport website. Eddie’s presser in the morning at 9:30 and I’ll post links to re-runs when they’re available.
