Newcastle Come Away With Win On Penalties (5-4) Against Spurs At Melbourne

Newcastle came from behind to draw this game 1-1 and then won the penalty shootout 5-4.

This is the side Newcastle started tonight at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against Tottenham in our first pre-season friendly – just 3 days after the Premier League season came to an end.

Tottenham took the lead after 32 minutes through former transfer target James Maddison, and Trippier was replaced by Jacob Murphy after a few more minutes.

It was rustiness for Nick Pope, who made a very sloppy pass out from the back that was intercepted – but he needs games to get back his sharpness.

It wasn’t long before Newcastle were on level terms and it was that man Isak again who scored the goal.

Isak was on there to tap the ball home to make it 1-1, which was the score at halftime.

Callum Wilson came on for Isak at the start of the second half and Joe White came on for Joelinton.

After 50 minutes Harvey Barnes went close with a shot from just outside the penalty box.

And then more changes as Harrison Ashby came on for Miggy Almiron, Alex Murphy for Dan Burn, and Amadou Diallo for Harvey Branes – so it’s all change in this game.

After 64 minutes Australian youngster Garang Kuol came on for Wilson, and Lucas DeBolle came on for Guimaraes.

There were other changes made towards the end by Eddie Howe and Newcastle finished the game with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham – and then we went to penalties.

Newcastle won the shootout 5-4 on penalties not missing a single penalty and Harrison Ashhby ensured the win when he scored with Newcastle’s 5th penalty.

A win is a win.

So, Newcastle have started their far-east tour but a game like this seems pointless from a football viewpoint – although it gives a chance for the youngsters to shine.

We have to think Newcastle must be close to the FFP thresholds for the past 3 years to take this trip to Australia in this financial year, which ends June 30th.

    Rh,
Why would I change my tune on Ashworth, that’s what fickle people do, do you still want Snaggletooth?

Don’t think the RW situation is a priority. Murphy has really surprised people and is way ahead of Miggy now. I hope Miggy goes now and we thank him for his glorious purple patch last season. Just can’t take much more of the non use of his right foot when moves inevitably break down far too often. Murphy has been way more effective in that regard. Plus I’d really love to see Minteh get a chance in that position too.

Mamardashvilli would be awesome and potentially ”next level” which sadly I don’t think Ramsdale is. For me Mama could be the real deal and difference maker.

With Tosin and Kelly we possibly don’t need a Diomande now.

Thuran at 15M euros does seem a no brainer but equally Ederson or Kone would be great.

Shame we couldn’t get Sesko before he became Sesko, as we all knew he would!!

Only got to look at Freedman’s wiki to see that he’s spent most of his career at palace, first as a footballer, and subsequently had long spells as a coach, assistant manager and as manager, before his sporting director role there.
Palace through and through I would imagine…It was always gonna be a tough nut to crack to prise him away.
Has he officially turned it down now, though?

Ashworth done a good job when here, he set up all kind of networks and scouts and has left a better structure than what we had before. Unless he hired a private eye to hack Tonali’s computer/phone there is absolutely no way he could have uncovered Tonali’s betting addiction. Given that the club have not been able to uncover any official evidence of the Italian FA or AC knowing about it either it is just one of them. You can’t just go changing history to suit a narrative.

No, I’m not changing my opinion on Ashworth regarding the signing of Tonali .
There is nothing he could have done about it.
Anyone who thinks different knows very little about gambling addicttz or the real world in general.
Ashworth is a rat that’s proven now .
Did he do a good job ?
He did the job he was paid to do signed some very good youngsters who could become stars if they are developed properly.
Any more that that we can only surmise as we don’t have the info so it’s pointless debating it.

Apologies if it’s been mentioned already but Europa league final tonight at 8pm.
Be interesting to know if Nickson’s there.
Ederson should start for Atalanta, who we’ve been strongly linked with, plenty of other talent on show too, on both sides.

    @Rotunda

Oh yeah I love Murphy I have defended him for years!! I think he will stay as he offers competent utility for all of the right side

I just think what would our attack look like if we had Palmer or Olise on the right wing this season to go with a variation of Isak, Gordon and Barnes

Also wouldn’t mind a creative and a defensive midfielder with pace as well still not 100% convinced on all of our midfield options

It doesn’t reflect well if Freedman was indeed in our final 2 for DOF and then rejected us. Surely the headhunters would have sounded out his willingness to take the job if offered. Something has gone awry with the process.

    On Poch…

I know it’s off NUFC matters but I just don’t get it if Boehly had anything to do with Poch leaving.

He took over a mish mash squad of overpriced, overpaid, disorganised players of multiple nationalities, many not speaking English… and had a poor start to the season.

    No shit Sherlock.

    But…

Within the season he had time to impose his nous and had them flying in the last 10 games to finish in 6th. And he’s away.

I hope Chelsea pay another manager a fortune and he bombs.

It’s nothing more than that lot deserve.

Pretty sure I didn’t say DA did a bad job but I did say he didn’t do a job he would be remembered for.

He did what he was paid for without making a dent

Is the club in a better structure since him…? Yes ofc it is and expected but it would be with whoever took the role.

Glad we weeded out the rat and even more so since what Davas posted

    Good riddance

    onmeheedson…

The new CP manager has made a massive difference during the time that Freedman was in the frame and I’m sure that’s had a big effect on his decision.

He’s CP through and through and if he thinks that together with the new manager they can turn CP into a top 10/8 team then I can see why he would want to stay.

Plus, if we hadn’t already offered him the job after months of being in the frame he’s probably had second thoughts on how keen we really are… and probably accepted a few quid more to stay from CP.

When reading the rumour about Freedman turning us down I thought exactly the same.

In the short time the new manager has been there he has transformed them. Can he maintain it into next year? Yet to be seen but I can understand why Freedman who has strong connections to Palace might stick about.

    Fenham…

    On Kuol…

The first thing I look for in a player, a young un on our books making a debut, or any new signing… is how they control a pass.

If a player can’t do that consistently well, they’ll struggle to be a top player, especially in the Prem where the oppo close you down so quickly.

Kuol had two passes under little pressure and his first touch was poor, and then he had a simple pass to the wing and he hit it behind the runner.

I’ve seen loads of players, especially wingers, who look good with the ball at their feet on a run… but they don’t make top players because their pass control and decision making is poor.

I know it’s early days, but my gut instinct is Kuol isn’t going to make it and his days at NUFC are already numbered.

As a matter of fact I’ve been involved in recruitment quite a lot in my career and yes you would probably check out their social media such as X, Facebook etc. but you certainly would not trawl around sporting blogs trying to see if a certain poster fitted a pattern that could possibly match your candidate.

With the the general election imminent I’m really looking forward to your political rants NOT!

I watched the whole game today – we played quite well in the first half (before all the subs) but there really was no excuse for the amount of times we kept playing the ball out of defence straight to a Spurs player which in the end resulted directly in their goal. Second half was a bit farcical with basically our U21’s v their U21’s and they were better than ours but we did well to hold on for a draw. The penalty shootout was even more farcical as nobody seemed to know it was coming but our boys did well to score all 5.
