Newcastle came from behind to draw this game 1-1 and then won the penalty shootout 5-4.
This is the side Newcastle started tonight at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against Tottenham in our first pre-season friendly – just 3 days after the Premier League season came to an end.

Tottenham took the lead after 32 minutes through former transfer target James Maddison, and Trippier was replaced by Jacob Murphy after a few more minutes.
It was rustiness for Nick Pope, who made a very sloppy pass out from the back that was intercepted – but he needs games to get back his sharpness.
It wasn’t long before Newcastle were on level terms and it was that man Isak again who scored the goal.
Isak was on there to tap the ball home to make it 1-1, which was the score at halftime.
Callum Wilson came on for Isak at the start of the second half and Joe White came on for Joelinton.
After 50 minutes Harvey Barnes went close with a shot from just outside the penalty box.
And then more changes as Harrison Ashby came on for Miggy Almiron, Alex Murphy for Dan Burn, and Amadou Diallo for Harvey Branes – so it’s all change in this game.
After 64 minutes Australian youngster Garang Kuol came on for Wilson, and Lucas DeBolle came on for Guimaraes.
There were other changes made towards the end by Eddie Howe and Newcastle finished the game with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham – and then we went to penalties.
Newcastle won the shootout 5-4 on penalties not missing a single penalty and Harrison Ashhby ensured the win when he scored with Newcastle’s 5th penalty.
A win is a win.
So, Newcastle have started their far-east tour but a game like this seems pointless from a football viewpoint – although it gives a chance for the youngsters to shine.
We have to think Newcastle must be close to the FFP thresholds for the past 3 years to take this trip to Australia in this financial year, which ends June 30th.

Comment #121Great experience for those kids. Not just to play in that stadium, in front of that crowd, but the whole trip. It’s unlikely a single one of them will make the grade at Newcastle, as is the way at the very top of the pyramid, but that will be unforgettable for each and every one of them, and an opportunity, which of course, do not come along very often, if at all. One more game, it’s important these kids respond, if they want to get to hang around a bit longer.

Comment #122Kuol hasn’t set the world on fire, has he? He obviously has talent, which will keep him around till the end of his deal, but this kid wasn’t even a regular starter in the A League. It’s a long way to the top, as Bon Scott would say. It’s basically why I respect all our players. You have to be really good, especially right now, or you won’t get a sniff. It’s interesting this kid from Man City wasn’t taken, because the likelihood is, that if he was as good as some of the hype around him when he came, he would be there. Man City let him go. Not saying he isn’t good. I’m sure he’s excellent. Maybe he isn’t fit. But you really do have to be a kind of complete package, and lucky too.

Comment #123I think with Eddie in the picture he could do for Kuol what he did for Big Joe.
Maybe Eddie can work with him and find a better position or maybe Eddie can build his confidence.
Maybe EH will try and maybe EH will sell him, either way I’m sure there’s some kind of plan.
On Ashworth, if there is an email talking to Man U before any official approach for him he may be fcuked for breech of contract.
On Dougie, Palace were in the final phases of re-negotiations on his contract, he had every right to look a Newcastle, hedging his bets comes to mind.
But of course most of the above is just Journo shite, could be all bullshit, until club says something it honestly doesn’t really matter. Well to me, anyone else has the right to pick and choose if they believe.

You criticised my comment about posters potentially doing themselves a disservice in the eyes of potential employers on the assumption I implied that the recruiter would trawl sites such as this.
If you take a minute to think about it, possibility of a potential employer who regularly looks into this site for example seeing things in a CV that reflect a poster who might have applied for a role, you might appreciate what I was driving at.
Yes, they may check an applicant’s social media sites but I was not suggesting for one minute that an employer would trawl sites such as this where posters use pseudonyms.
As far as the election’s concerned, can we hope you see sense before voting!

Comment #126Lesh I would agree with your comment re Fenham. The man is either emotionally immature or worse.
Fenners, I love the way you picked a whole tweet from someone else on Twitter about Kuol, and then presented it as your considered opinion.
You do realise that you are not in the mess now with blokes who might stupidly swallow your horsesh1t?

Comment #130Wow! Eddie Howe visits Melbourne, one of the world’s great cities, and all he wants to do is visit Ramsey St, and the Neighbours set. Eye roll emoji.
I mean talk about slumming it.
It’s Summer Bay, all the way Eddie. All the way.

Comment #131I voted for Pope, probably revealing two things: I didn’t watch the game, and obvious bias.
I didn’t come here for that.
Great move for Eddie to grab the mike and congratulate publicly the players who don’t get to play and exalt their daily contribution. That’s a move from a manager who wants EVERYONE to feel like a winner, leaving no one behind. Result? Less back stabbing, selfishness, sabotaging, more camaraderie, team spirit.
On man management, kudos. Except in that one case (though I don’t know the details).

Comment #132Nicky, I used to run a liquor store just around the corner from the Channel 10 studio where they filmed Neighbours. They did a couple of scenes in our car park. A few of their cast were regular customers. The bloke who played Paul?the hotel manager was very friendly and Annie Jones I think was her name had the most mesmerising eyes.

Comment #136I think Kuol only cost us about £300k so not a particularly costly gamble on the footballing side.
Apart from the talent he was showing at the time he will also have been signed to help raise our profile in Australia, same as the friendly with Tottenham.
So doubt the £300K was really wasted at all.

After the limited You Tube clips we seen and his excellent cameo’s at the WC we all had massive hopes for him, it’s been a shame following his path and seeing him struggle. I think he’s come in to the spotlight yesterday and unfortunately really fluffed his lines when even a slightly better pass would have made a difference, like someone said yesterday another poor loan spell might be the end of him, they might keep him with us to gain his confidence in the youth set up. Or will his wages upset the apple cart, I would imagine he’s on a lot more wedge than the others.

Not comparing in the slightest but didn’t Kane have a lot of poor loan spells before breaking through?
Only 19 so still got a bit of time to come good, I won’t give up on him yet. Probably paid for himself in club promotions down under, anyway.

Comment #154On Kuol – the lad is obviously lacking in confidence. He’s come over to a foreign country and had some very bad loan experiences – the club have to shoulder some of the blame for this.
I was pleased he put his penalty away and now the club have to find a way to rebuild his confidence by either keeping him here or arranging a good loan where he will play. Only then can he be truly judged!

Comment #157No surprise that Salford based BBC are avoiding any meaningful reporting on what looks like the illegal approach to poach Dan Ashcroft from NUFC by ManU.
Nor on Ashcrofts’s email fiasco and petulant attempts to distort the reality of the situation. Garden leave is normal business practice supported by contractual obligations. NUFC could have enforced that Ashcroft continued to honour his contract and continue working. The fact that he was in cahoots with a Man City employee and discussing confidential matters put the end to that notion.
Too many crocodile tears.

In light of what has come out I don’t think anyone supports DA now. Can’t deny that previously he had been doing a good, even great job though. Signing Isak, Gordon etc, linking and building up all the departments, getting scouts in all corners, bringing in whizz kids like Minteh, Harrison, A Murphy et al.
Yes he’s a deplorable rat for what he’s done and you wouldn’t want him in the trenches but as my lovable, non confrontational pal jail says ”you can’t re-write history.
