No European Competition For Newcastle Next Season

With Manchester United playing well and beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley yesterday in the FA Cup Final it ended Newcastle’s last chance of a place in the Europa League Conference – so no European competition next season for Newcastle.

It’s like going back two years ago before Eddie Howe had his first full season at Newcastle and we made the Carabao Cup Final only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.

It doesn’t look like the win yesterday will save Erik ten Hag’s career at the Red Devils, and he is still expected to be replaced.

It was hard luck on us but with respect, the Red Devils deserved their win yesterday and had an excellent game plan which seemed to work almost to perfection.

Newcastle’s season was brutal with all the extra games and injuries we picked up and we have to think this season has to be one of consolidation and we must learn from last season’s endeavors.

We played 51 games last season and with a win ratio of 45.1%.

The season before last, we played 46 total games with a win ratio of 52.2% – so we expect around the same number of games this season.

We will have less games this season but our season goals surely have to be to win a local Cup win and to again finish in the top four as we did the season before last.

Who Was Newcastle's Player Of The Season 2023-2024?

Gray would be unreal! A top talent who is destined for greatness.

Imagine having two youngsters in Miley and Gray for the middle of the park. Exciting summer to come

Not sure Archie Gray is up to the physicality of the PL. Looks like he’s still got some filling out to do, a bit like Miley. But worth buying and loaning back to Leeds.

I think Mikeys doing a good job here. Smart negotiator Froggy. We don’t get taken for mugs and we generally (besides Joel) get value. I think we can trust Mikey here but like him I wouldn’t waste money unless he can spin a few bucks down the line. He is an excellent man to look after our money 22 and its good to have his prudence. We may not be minted but Mike is safe for us and you should value his financial rectitude.

    Saratoga,
I would imagine the same team that brought in Bruno, Trippier, BDB, Isak and Botman.
    ************************************
Trippier and BDB were needs must, save us from relegation, does what it says on the tin signings, for 12-15 million.
Isak and Botman and later Gordon who you don’t mention Dan Ashworth was there.
Ashworth probably having a say re Bruno.
When he went he did mention too many voices.

Lets not have a director of football then if it’s not important.

Not a bad season for injuries then mate.

I think it could end up being an astute signing if true. Raj mentioned earlier about the price and I think he is right on saying if done it would be a lot cheaper than people think.

    Mund,.
    From Sanjay
The Jarrod Bowen and Dominic Calvert-Lewin links to #NUFC are interesting.

Jarrod Bowen is a dream signing for all of us, but one that I’ve always firmly had in the “unattainable” category given that he could easily be our record signing. But *if* we can get it done, then he’s the best RW on the domestic market. He should be Salah’s successor at Liverpool. As I’ve said before on here – Mbeumo should be the next option.

Calvert-Lewin is bound to have many scratching heads – and although it’s not an ideal signing, I think it’s logical. We’d love to have two top CFs competing with each other (for example Sesko), but the reality is it’s probably hard (but certainly not impossible) to execute this.

It’s hard to convince any top CF to play behind the 3rd best CF in the world in Alexander Isak. Calvert-Lewin gives us a slightly different profile, more aerial threat – and he would be satisfied to play behind Isak.

He runs the channels well, he’ll help with set-pieces at both ends, his hold up play is strong – and let’s not forget how good he was between 2019 and 2021. He’s still only 27, and Howe would feel like we can get him back to being a 10+ goals a season CF, especially now that he’s just had a fairly injury-free season.

I personally really enjoyed watching DCL in his prime, and 3 years ago he was England second choice CF to Kane. If we can get him back to those levels, which is feasible – then it’s potentially a really opportunistic signing.

I’d honestly be quite excited to see what we could get from him given his skillset and ability to give us different attacking solutions.

I’m a big Sean Longstaff fan, and so while I like to see Northern clubs like Leeds, even Sunderland and Boro in the top flight, as opposed to say Southampton, although for a Southern club, Southampton aren’t too bad to be fair, Im relieved they most likely won’t be in for Lobby now. I could see him in a Leeds shirt, and with the emergence of Miley, and it being pure profit in the books, I was thinking it might well be on. Now I don’t think they can afford him. I think many will say Longstaff has had a below par campaign, but I think he’s had a very convincing season, playing week in week out, most often carrying injury, in a depleted midfield and never shirking the load he was repeatedly asked to shoulder.

Eddie knows, and I think he’ll also be relieved.

Get yourself fit Sean, and let’s be having you back to your very best next season.

I’ve read that. Gives good analysis does Sanjay.

I totally agree and I am also a little excited of the prospect of DCL under Eddie Howe. He has went off the radar but no denying the player he was. He would give us a different dimension.

We definitely need more fire power and DCL could be a very good signing. The club hasn’t let us down yet with recruitment so I trust them completely.

I don’t believe we’re in for DCL, but he and Bowen would certainly fit the bill if Miggy and Wilson were to move on. Bowen would be fantastic of course, but really seems quite improbable unless we somehow have a war chest available to us all of a sudden. DCL if he’s fit, and we can get him for a reasonable fee, and a reasonable fee in turn for Wilson seems the far more plausible deal. When fit, he’s quality, who can alternate with Isak and also play with him. He of course would have to be fit. Everton will want him to sign a new deal I’m sure, but the player himself might just fancy us, especially if he’s mates with Gordon, who I’m sure can’t speak highly enough of the club, and where we are headed.

    DCL is an awkward one.

There’s no doubting he’s a good player … When he’s on the pitch.
If we’d been linked under Ashley though, We’d have all be screaming cheap crock.
I guess in there lie the answers…
    1. He’s liable to be favourably priced due to his injury record and Everton’s financial vulnerability which we know will help us combat PSR.
    And more importantly.
    2. We fully trust this ownership over the last to be buying players in an effort to take us forward, not just carry us over a line.

If it’s true he’s coming, I’ll welcome him.

Bowen probably needs a move too actually. But he’s a player, currently very much in his prime, that could go to CL club no bother. Such a pity we didn’t just go and get him when we had the chance four or so years ago.

At the time we thought it was better to give long lucrative deals to the likes of Isaac Hayden and free agents like Jeff Hendrick, and Ryan Fraser.

    Hmmmm!

If we weren’t hamstrung by PSR of course, we’d just go out and buy Bowen if we wanted him, and DCL wouldn’t even be in the conversation. We’d probably already have Harry Kane.

As I’ve said in the past though, while FFP and PSR needs some adjustment, it’s important that it be there, and policed stringently.

I hope Man City and Chelsea are preparing for a significant jolt, and they get it. Man City in particular.
