With Manchester United playing well and beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley yesterday in the FA Cup Final it ended Newcastle’s last chance of a place in the Europa League Conference – so no European competition next season for Newcastle.
It’s like going back two years ago before Eddie Howe had his first full season at Newcastle and we made the Carabao Cup Final only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.
It doesn’t look like the win yesterday will save Erik ten Hag’s career at the Red Devils, and he is still expected to be replaced.
It was hard luck on us but with respect, the Red Devils deserved their win yesterday and had an excellent game plan which seemed to work almost to perfection.
Newcastle’s season was brutal with all the extra games and injuries we picked up and we have to think this season has to be one of consolidation and we must learn from last season’s endeavors.
We played 51 games last season and with a win ratio of 45.1%.
The season before last, we played 46 total games with a win ratio of 52.2% – so we expect around the same number of games this season.
We will have less games this season but our season goals surely have to be to win a local Cup win and to again finish in the top four as we did the season before last.

What do you think?

Linked means nowt.
We have been linked with about 80 players in the past month.
Deciding to actually pay massive money is what counts.
Who has the authority to go for it. Who says yes or no.
Who has the authority to decide.
What process do they go through.
Right now loads of players will be potentially available and all the big clubs will know it and have a report/assessment of them.
Darren Eales. As CEO he should have the final say. Not sure he does.
No director of football right now.
Eddie/ Nickson/ Eddies nephew. Every now and again Amanda steps in as with Joe Elinton’s contract.
Then the real say for big decisions goes to PIF.
Can’t know the actual situation, but it does concern me re the process they go through. Having said that we have not had a major failing.
Was concerned about last summers business. But, Hall and Tino seem to be coming good. Tonali is what he is and after the betting issues we will see. That one been in limbo for a year.

For the avoidance of doubt, I am in no way in shape or form trying to diminish the effect of Ashworth, he was/ is regarded as one of the best I’m the business world wide. We all read and heard about what he done here, he obviously was fantastic and set lots of things up. He wasn’t here to scout players personally but set up networks in the UK, he also set up a hub with gkt all different aspects of the clubbtalking to each other through him. He’s an :orrble slimy varstewar but to do
Say he done foo# all is full of shte!

Comment #164We have a very good core of footballers. We’re now at a point where if we did add this big Georgian keeper, Tosin, Kelly, Bowen and DCL, we’d be thinking, along with the other top third clubs, that things just got very real.

He has burned Ashworth’s reputation repeatedly, bless.
Ashworth is a dick but we needed him.
I posted on here months ago that there was an issue about power in the club at DOF/manager level and got flamed for it, by the usual crew who live in a strange 1960s free love and happiness bubble

Comment #167I don’t have that much against Ashworth to be honest. It seems most likely that he was not entirely happy with the job he had with us, perhaps the terms of employment, the scope of his authority or something like this. He can go to Man U if he wants. It’s his career, and his life. He did sign a contract though, and you rarely just get to walk away scot free from one of those. But I agree, it’s ancient history, or should be, and will be for us, as fans, once we find a replacement.

Comment #169I get the importance of D of football, I really do.
The fergie style one man band pulling all the strings is gone.
But we aren’t paralysed without one, surely.
There’s a coaching team identifying weaknesses. There’s a whole recruitment infrastructure. There are plenty of good negotiators as witnessed in that documentary. I doubt Dan had input in our playing style. There’s people who can prepare and sign a contract.
We’ll survive:)

Comment #170Chelsea getting kick out of Conference competition
Could this be shades of 1969 when we won the Fairs Cup getting in through the back door.
At the time it was one Club one City and I think their were two teams from London or was it Birmingham qualified above us but only one could enter

When Atalanta played a pre-season friendly at SJP, I was struck by the theory that Howe wanted to emulate the style of play. We have seen nufc successfully achieve the full on attacking play, particularly against PSG at home. But for the many mitigating factors, not a lot since.

Comment #178Reasons to be in the Europa Conference.
Chance to win a trophy.
Extra revenue from UEFA.
Extra matchday revenue.
Extra shirt sales revenue.
More footfall in the city due to away fans = more revenue for businesses in the city.
Promotes tourism.
More global scope on our club = possibly more revenue.
More chances of our exciting youngsters getting game time.

Comment #181Finally my last comment deriving from the Uafa final is that I would prefer we bid for Patrik Schick over DCL. He is a proven one goal in two, left footed striker that plays coming in from the right. His limited playing time recently may make a move for him more attractive. At 28 he maybe a bit old but he definitely has the qualities we need, performed at the highest levels and would compliment playing alongside Isak.

Comment #182Having had time to reflect I’m not too upset about not being in the Europa conference and going to Kazakstan or similar on a Thursday night!!
As I understand it, possibly wrongly, even if we had finished 6th we would have been bumped down to the Europe conference, rather than the Europa league following Manu’s win.
Really, really hope we can pull off Mamardashvilli as that could be an Allyson / Ederson type game changer. The level of player we need to be looking at.

Tino Tosin Kelly / Botman Hall

Also being in Europe also adds points to the UEFA Co-Efficients.
Newcastle are ranked 83rd in Europe after last seasons efforts with 8,000 points.
Shittie are top with 148,000
Co-efficency helps to improve their seeding for future draws

“Mund,.
From Sanjay
The Jarrod Bowen and Dominic Calvert-Lewin links to #NUFC are interesting.
Jarrod Bowen is a dream signing for all of us, but one that I’ve always firmly had in the “unattainable” category given that he could easily be our record signing. But *if* we can get it done, then he’s the best RW on the domestic market. He should be Salah’s successor at Liverpool. As I’ve said before on here – Mbeumo should be the next option.
Calvert-Lewin is bound to have many scratching heads – and although it’s not an ideal signing, I think it’s logical. We’d love to have two top CFs competing with each other (for example Sesko), but the reality is it’s probably hard (but certainly not impossible) to execute this.
It’s hard to convince any top CF to play behind the 3rd best CF in the world in Alexander Isak. Calvert-Lewin gives us a slightly different profile, more aerial threat – and he would be satisfied to play behind Isak.
He runs the channels well, he’ll help with set-pieces at both ends, his hold up play is strong – and let’s not forget how good he was between 2019 and 2021. He’s still only 27, and Howe would feel like we can get him back to being a 10+ goals a season CF, especially now that he’s just had a fairly injury-free season.
I personally really enjoyed watching DCL in his prime, and 3 years ago he was England second choice CF to Kane. If we can get him back to those levels, which is feasible – then it’s potentially a really opportunistic signing.
I’d honestly be quite excited to see what we could get from him given his skillset and ability to give us different attacking solutions.”
I fully agree with the above Bowen would make the difference of at least a dozen points. DCL would add another 8 – 10 so I’d be well satisfied with that as it would just about put us in 3rd place add in Tonali’s return and we really could be up there on the top rung! But we’d also have to factor (deduct) the goals that Wilson would’ve scored! Assuming he’d have moved on.
Bowen is a fantastic player and DCL is very, very, powerful 🙂

Comment #192Pep Guardiola will reasonably be waiting for the outcome of the legal proceedings against the club, before deciding his contractual situation. With potentially only one season remaining, the club may actually be eager to go for resolution in the hope that Pep extends.

Comment #198Ayoze Perez called up by Spain ahead of the Euros, along with Joselu and Merino. Delighted by this. Ayoze was basically my favourite Newcastle player the whole time he played for us. I feel as if he’d still be here if he hadn’t decided to leave when Leicester came in for him. You might also think that both Merino and even Joselu might also be capable of holding down a spot in our current and considerably better squad.
