With Manchester United playing well and beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley yesterday in the FA Cup Final it ended Newcastle’s last chance of a place in the Europa League Conference – so no European competition next season for Newcastle.
It’s like going back two years ago before Eddie Howe had his first full season at Newcastle and we made the Carabao Cup Final only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.
It doesn’t look like the win yesterday will save Erik ten Hag’s career at the Red Devils, and he is still expected to be replaced.
It was hard luck on us but with respect, the Red Devils deserved their win yesterday and had an excellent game plan which seemed to work almost to perfection.
Newcastle’s season was brutal with all the extra games and injuries we picked up and we have to think this season has to be one of consolidation and we must learn from last season’s endeavors.
We played 51 games last season and with a win ratio of 45.1%.
The season before last, we played 46 total games with a win ratio of 52.2% – so we expect around the same number of games this season.
We will have less games this season but our season goals surely have to be to win a local Cup win and to again finish in the top four as we did the season before last.

What do you think?

Comment #202Hmmmm, maybe not my favourite come to think of it, but certainly in my top three, along with Collocini and Gutierrez.
We had very decent players under Ashley, always about 11 of them, while the rest were a bit pants as I recall.

Confirmation if ever needed.
Top of the club agenda will always be revenues.
Has to be, to sustain any forward momentum under PSR.

Comment #204Yeah, I think most people realised why we did it. Maybe when our revenues have grown, in the coming years, we won’t entertain that sort of trip.
Also, who knows, we might have needed to do it before the end of June, if we are close to psr/ffp limits

I had not seen it before and it gives a little glimpse of his actual role in nufc.

I dare say all of those players who’ve done so well when they left could get in our team now.
But remember we didn’t* appreciate them much when they were here. Three chances and you’re out! We need to practice more patience. Glad we didn’t apply that rule to big Joel!
* Mostly, I did appreciate them, or at least was willing to give them a break. Remember, Ayoze had to plug his ears…
You could see Merino was class, we got rid asap. Joselu missed a couple by an inch or two, useless oot! That french kid was class too…
Anyway, it happens to all teams.

Comment #212Makes me wonder if having Saudi backing is generally blocking some international companies and if we are just having to sit to one side in the hope that a PIF associated company will be pushed in our direction.

Comment #214The one thing that has surprised me with our owners is as yet they havenât done a thorough fan consultation on renaming the ground as thatâs the next big revenue stream available!
I fully expected them to see what the fan feeling would be to renaming with @ St James park last season as Iâd think they can argue a higher fee for a champions league team!
Iâm sure this day will come & I genuinely wouldnât like to guess what the result if fans were asked, also how you could do it without our dirty neighbours trying to affect the results!

Why?
Presumably we will also be getting more foreign players which will be a balancing factor.

Comment #217I like Sanjay and value his opinion but I still can’t see any of the big 6 signing DCL.However, my mate Baz reckons it’s a done deal to us for 15-20M. At that price I could live with it.
I remember someone on here saying that renaming the ground, ie Aramco@stjamespark, was only worth 20M pa. Surely that’s not to be sniffed at though.

Comment #219I’m not sure why the players should whinge so much about the Oz trip.
They’d hardly have been travelling cattle class. They’d be travelling like pampered poodles all with their own masseurs etc and staying at the best hotels money can buy . Season was over and no more games for those involved in the euros for a few weeks.

In short âchurnâ, by which I mean players come in and players go out over an extended period of time. Done effectively, certain players can be utilised as investment tools. Overall, the squad organically revolves around younger players arriving and older players leaving. Hopefully they enhance the first team, but some will play their part and may be sold for more than they cost.

That ÂŁ20m pa could surely be argued to ÂŁ30m for a champions league team?
It would massively help with ffp if we are as close to the threshold as is being reported!
Iâm sure our owners have a plan & I personally could live with a @stjamespark name but not without that!

I honestly thought we’d get at least 30m a year from ground renaming and yeah if SJP is in the title, I don’t think it’s an issue.

Wouldn’t bother me if we only had majority Saudi sponsors with their insane wealth.
If other companies don’t want to sponsor us because of our saudi ownership it’s a ”their problem”. Never did super hypocritical Manu any harm having saudi sponsorship.

Comment #227Rat-cliffs bending the rules????!!!!!
Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought Nice in 2019 and UEFA regulations state clubs that are owned by the same owners will not be allowed to compete in the same UEFA competition
Nice have qualified for the second-tier European competition by finishing fifth in Ligue 1 and, ordinarily, UEFA rules would see United demoted to the UEFA Conference League, the third-tier competition, because the French club finished higher in their respective league.
However, it’s understood United have held talks with UEFA officials since Ratcliffe’s investment was signed off and he received assurances that the issue could be resolved.
INEOS issued a statement and said: âWe are aware of the position of the two clubs and we are in direct dialogue with UEFA. We are convinced that we have a solution for next season in Europe.”

Comment #231Watched a few mins of Loaded last night. Glad they were echoing the word I have been using , namely “ruthless”
Owners need to be ruthless in getting the right targets
Eddie needs to be ruthless with the squad, don’t keep any unless good etc
Players need to be ruthless and put lesser teams to the sword more than we did this year ( easier said than done )

Comes from various sources over the past months which state
In theory, UEFA prohibits two clubs which have the same owners from playing in the same competition at the same time.
Imagine if they got drawn together in the same League group – there could be results which would be mutually beneficial for both teams, and would represent an obvious conflict of interest over the other teams involved.
But when this exact issue came up with Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, both owned by Red Bull, in 2017 – they were allowed to participate with some manipulation of staff

Comment #238The worst thing that happened to European competitions was when the big clubs got together and pressurised UEFA into changing to group stages from straight knockout.
There arguments they would lose money if two of the elite clubs were drawn together one would miss out on a lucrative cup run.
Which now means all the elite clubs get a seeded draw making loads of money in the process and also pick up seeding points
