No European Competition For Newcastle Next Season

With Manchester United playing well and beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley yesterday in the FA Cup Final it ended Newcastle’s last chance of a place in the Europa League Conference – so no European competition next season for Newcastle.

It’s like going back two years ago before Eddie Howe had his first full season at Newcastle and we made the Carabao Cup Final only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.

It doesn’t look like the win yesterday will save Erik ten Hag’s career at the Red Devils, and he is still expected to be replaced.

It was hard luck on us but with respect, the Red Devils deserved their win yesterday and had an excellent game plan which seemed to work almost to perfection.

Newcastle’s season was brutal with all the extra games and injuries we picked up and we have to think this season has to be one of consolidation and we must learn from last season’s endeavors.

We played 51 games last season and with a win ratio of 45.1%.

The season before last, we played 46 total games with a win ratio of 52.2% – so we expect around the same number of games this season.

We will have less games this season but our season goals surely have to be to win a local Cup win and to again finish in the top four as we did the season before last.

NUFC are still well ahead of the curve, the reason being we reached 4th last season and generated loads of extra revenue to appease FFP. Although we reached 7th this season is not a step backwards because that finish was just as impressive as the previous seasons finish. It’s been mentioned many times on here that we’ve really been up against it this season whether it was through the horrendous injury crisis we endured of the terrible run of bad luck in games.

Eddie and the lads showed a fighting spirit this season and our owners are very aware of what’s been accomplished this season. To keep ahead of the curve we need a top 6 finish this season but it really wouldn’t surprise me if we get a top 4 or even 3 finish. This season is crucial and the transfer window will be also crucial for us to really move up a a few notchs to go full throttle for a shot at the cups and a top 4 finish. I have full faith in Eddie as he has been nothing short of incredible since he became manager. He has never let us down and I’m sure the owners feel exactly the same. Unfortunately we get the odd daft wum who appear from nowhere calling for Eddie’s head and they’re easy to spot and can’t be taken seriously whatsoever. Also the ones that call people happy clappers for being happy and excited as to how well NUFC have done since the TO took place and the unbelievable performances Eddie has pulled off with his very UNITED squad of talented young players.

Yes we’re very much on course and as mentioned this season coming has all the hallmarks that it could quite possibly be a season many of us have been waiting for since 1969.

Certainly no cause for alarm of anything but I do think the season ended on a bit of a sour note.

We managed to turn a corner but then with that defect to Man Utd and Chelsea’s surprising resurgence, we lost ourselves Europa League football. Then as a kicker, our consolation prize of Europe Conference was taken away by a shock Man Utd win in the FA Cup.

As you say, big summer and surely not another season with as many injuries (or even if so, we’ll have more quality and experience in the squad to cope) we could really do something special next season and get back in the CL.

We have a lot to look forward to on and off the pitch, so no major complaints, just a disappointing feeling hanging over the end of the season.

    TS,

I have to agree with you that the end to the season was a sickener, however with all the injuries and bad luck we have to look at 7th as a decent achievement. Many clubs would have been relegated with the amount of players we lost. Players and Eddie never really lost their heads at all which is a good sign, they battled right to the end. They give everything they had and to look like we were getting European football until one of the upsets of the season in the FA cup final is testament to their strength and efforts.

Luck balances itself out and after just about everything going against us in the season just ended let’s hope that Lady Luck shines on us this season coming. I think so many of our players will be right up for it with a huge point to prove, with Tonali finally returning and some very good signings made anything and I mean anything is possible.

    HWTL!!

Certainly I think 7th is a good achievement given where we were around Christmas with the injury crisis hitting hard. And I definitely agree if you look at it over the season you can’t complain…it’s just that once we’d fought to get into a good position, drawing to Brighton and losing at Old Trafford were sickening. Even a win over a Brighton and a draw over Man Utd would have seen us 6th.

Any it’s as you say. If we get things right in the summer, there is no reason next season can’t be a special one.

Yeh – still gotta remember how fast we have come in a short period of time.

Just hope we can get thru most of next season without a huge injury list.

Selling Targett, Wilson, and getting more robust replacements will help.

Willock and Tonali are the key. If we get Big Joe, little Joe and Tonali back it may free up Gordon to play down the right if need be. Tino, Tonali and Gordon some upgrade on Trippier, Longstaff and Miggy in all honesty. Love Tripps for what he has done for club but had an awful year so far.

We are still lacking the true craftsmen up top or floating around tho. Unsure whether we are the sort of team to carry one.

Such a shame regards Neto’s injuries. He would have been great for us.
Eze would be mint but could he play in an Eddie team. Bit of a maverick. Beautiful player tho.

Excellent how you swept away the entire opposition, leaving us to just pick up the… Title 🙂

Of course, there are other teams, apart from the usual suspects you mentioned. E.g. Should Palace decide to keep it’s exciting line up, they’ll be doing some damage. They were THE form team in the end remember.

I’m not calling anything till I see the new signings*. And, importantly, other teams’ signings as well.

    * I may cop out, even then. Let’s wait and see how they blend, and that sort of talk.

For example, I’m still on the fence regarding Tonali. I’ve seen him like what twice? He’s been away from competitive football for ages. There’s weight on the poor lad’s shoulders (“he’d better deliver or else,” I hear fans saying. Or else what, I reply)… I really hope he makes it here, for his sake and mine.

Disappointed to be turned down by Freeman but I think the other guy is a better choice with a more European dimension to his CV which I think the club needs rather than the British lean which Eddie seems to have and Freeman same.

Wonder why he turned us down? I guess Palace are on the edge of fast growth and he has a love of them but I’m surprised our “project” didn’t sway him

    Leans towards British players..

First set of signings to battle relegation.
    Pope, Tripps, Targett, Bruno, Burn.

Made sense to sign british players who knew the league.

    To Improve…
Botman, Isak, Tonali, Tino, Hall, Gordon, Barnes.

Mix of both. All first rate signings.
Imagine there will be more of the same this summer. Think Lloyd Kelly will be first thru door, followed by a new number one keeper. As Pope is cack with his feet.

When is a source a sauce? That is the question!
Personally I love a sauce. Not bothered about sources as often they amount to zip.
At home I am the condiment king. My sauces have a special place in the fridge, and always go back from whence they came. So I always know if they are about to run out. I like to keep a spare in the cupboard.
In no particular orders the sauces I can’t live without are…
    1. Reggae reggae
    2. HP
    3. Mayonnaise
    4. Ketchup
    5. Horseradish
    6. Redcurrent
    7. Dijon mustard

    The above covers all bases.

    On a footy related topic.
    Just returned from a wake.
She was 74 and a proud Geordie.
Season ticket holder who could only see the positives despite enduring the Ashley years.
She was the eternal optimist but is another who won’t be around to see any glory.
The clock ticks for all of us.
The sooner we can win a pot the better.
    It’s been too long.
But every year the pressure builds, so it won’t be easy.
We need more players in the mould of Bruno, Gordon and Burn. Players who will die for the club.
We are Boston Red Sox of football.
Name me one team in the world as big as us that haven’t won anything in the 55 years we’ve won nowt.
I’m sure it will happen but I’d like it soon.

onmeedsun @ 309… Name me one team in the world as big as us that haven’t won anything in 55 years.

Too true, and I’ve been simikar to fans of other teams for the last three decades… and I’m sick to the back teeth of it.

I was lucky enough to be at the 69 Fars Cup home game and listened to the second half of the away leg – the only half that was broadcast on BBC radio can you believe – in the back lane of my home in Wallsend with dozens of other dads and kids all trying to tune in on our Dansette radio’s (anyone else remember them?).

It’s unbelievable that 55 years later I’ve seen us win nowt else.

Beaten in every final, semi-final and Charity Shield that I’ve been to at Wembley.

It will be one of the best moments of life – and I truly mean that – to see us win a cup or even better a title in my lifetime.

    God willing I will.

Freedman in terms of his lower league connections would be good I suppose although it would be a different remit here:

Getting the likes of Gheui to go to Palace is all about shop window similar to an Ashley model

It’s easier for Palace to buy a guy who is a fringe player from Chelsea Man Utd etc the fees generally will be lower for a smaller club

Palace can pick a domestic pool of players who are happy to stay in London

Now with Spors you would imagine he has access to a bigger range of players worldwide that we can tap into plus he has experience of working for a few different clubs and multi club models which sounds appealing

    So true.
Not forgetting that when we win the League or a Trophy we will have developed a winning mentality and got rid of a few demons.
That then is impetus to build on and makes other sides more wary of us so more power to our performances.

    Bills
The problem we have is to win that first pot is going to require something a bit extra. A bit like rockets that you need to break out of the earth’s atmosphere. We need to propell our spending to make this happen. Chelsea and City both did it, but when there weren’t any PSR rules and the level of spend required to turbo boost your club was less than now. We really needed to spend double what we have in the past 2 years on transfers and wages to have a squad that would win something. But we can’t do that. Has to be organic growth. But there are limits on how much we can grow revenues if we’re not winning stuff, so very difficult to match the cartel, never mind exceed their spending for a few years as we build the brand. It is so much harder for us. I’d like us to stick 2 fingers up at the lot of them and spend £500m this summer but they’d Chuck us out the league. It’s not going to be easy and we are going to have to be very canny. Keep Eddie, give him players he can develop that don’t cost the earth, and hold our nerve. We can’t afford to be changing managers every season like Chelski.
