With Manchester United playing well and beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley yesterday in the FA Cup Final it ended Newcastle’s last chance of a place in the Europa League Conference – so no European competition next season for Newcastle.
It’s like going back two years ago before Eddie Howe had his first full season at Newcastle and we made the Carabao Cup Final only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.
It doesn’t look like the win yesterday will save Erik ten Hag’s career at the Red Devils, and he is still expected to be replaced.
It was hard luck on us but with respect, the Red Devils deserved their win yesterday and had an excellent game plan which seemed to work almost to perfection.
Newcastle’s season was brutal with all the extra games and injuries we picked up and we have to think this season has to be one of consolidation and we must learn from last season’s endeavors.
We played 51 games last season and with a win ratio of 45.1%.
The season before last, we played 46 total games with a win ratio of 52.2% – so we expect around the same number of games this season.
We will have less games this season but our season goals surely have to be to win a local Cup win and to again finish in the top four as we did the season before last.

What do you think?

Comment #321Mention there of keepers being good with their feet etc.
Man City no 2 Ortega has a reputation for being good with his feet.
Passing it out etc.
Think he over did it in the cup final.
Almost caught out a couple of times before the first goal.
Nowt worse than trying to live up to your reputation.

With your background in finance.
Have you read the Mag article re FFP.
Bruno cost 40M on a 5 year deal. After 2 years his value for FFP has dropped to 24M. Signs a new deal and it drops again.
In reality he is worth 2.5 times what we paid for him.
However, that does not count unless we actually sell him.
In terms of real depreciation I’m not seeing a lot of it.
Ritchie – 12M to buy but was here 8 yrs. Murphy similar.
Schar and Lascelles etc cost next to nowt.
The big signings have not depreciated in the real market. In fact their value has gone up.
Think we have more to spend than some think. Just don’t tell anybody.

Comment #325Lee I’d be delighted with Spor. I think his international experience is more than Dougie could have brought and will balance Eddie’s leaning towards prem experience.
Whether people like it or not we have regressed this season and we need progess now.
Spor could be very good for us with his multi club experience and history of adding value to.players.
His cv is broad, he’s young and considered highly experienced and I think his European outlook is perfect for us.

The key if we do appoint Spors is that him and Eddie can work together and have enough in common when it comes to football philosophy etc. I would hope that Eddie gets to meet him before any contracts are signed.

Iāve been retired 3 years now but I would gladly give the club a free day a week if theyād let me take a look at their PSR model. I would have loved that sort of dynamic forecasting. Iām sure the CFO is all over it and takes it to bed with him at night!
The depreciation charges are what drives the profit and loss, together with wages. When players are out of contract there are no depreciation charges, which helps the club as that frees up depreciation charges for new players. If Bruno has signed a time extension to his original contract then it may be possible to spread his remaining transfer fee over this new term, thereby reducing the annual charge. But if we do replace Ritchie and Dummett then those transfer fees will hit the depreciation charge and represent an increase in costs, as the leaving players had no depreciation charge. However, if we get any fees for those leaving then we get to take 100% to profit which can be offset against the new depreciation charges. The beauty of a simple spreadsheet!

Comment #329The only way you can measure regression is if the same players play against the same teams the following year.
It is clearly not the case, the theory is flawed.
Given the circumstances we have done better because of the extra games and the injuries.

Yeah I do think there’s a balance to be had with keepers in terms of how they perform in possession
Pope was very lucky against Brentford with that passage of play where he got fouled but on another day he’s giving a penalty or a goal away with that bad touch he just looked so uncomfortable with the ball as he always does
I think as we progress as a team Pope’s lack of kicking skills will be exposed more because It almost results In us losing the ball everytime he has it!
Means we have to try win it back and get exhausted chasing the ball or cant spring attacks from the keeper which better teams than us use to their advantage

Cheers. If you would consider coming out of retirement I will get Amanda to give you a call.
Seriously though. I don’t understand the complex side of FFP. I don’t want to really. What’s the point. I’m not in charge and never will be.
One thing my life experience has taught me. Authority and accountability go together. You never seperate the two. If you have authority over who comes and goes you have to accept that it’s you that’s accountable.
Never let a committee decide. You know what they say about a Camel.
Arsenal. David Dein had the final say. However, what existed between him and Wenger was trust and loyalty. From that you get confidence, motivation and good will.

Agreed.
Pope was good/is good at sweeping, which is a different skill.
One time it let him down was against Liverpool.
His sending off I think may well have cost us the win in the final.

Itās just a matter of time before we do win a prize but I just hope Itās soon!
I was also at SJP to see Newcastle United win the first leg of the Fairs Cup in 1969 and most of the other home games including the Semi against Rangers. I also recall being huddled round my āTransistor Radioā listening to the away leg! No TV in those days! But we did it and thatās the only prize Iāve seen Toon lift as I just missed the Fifties cup wins. I pray that Iāll be around to seen Wor lads lift the EPL cup then I could die a happy chappy!

Comment #336Saratoga – i think yer right. Pope getting sent off seemed to start a whole sense of doom to the cup final as soon as he seen red.
Karius is miles away from a good keeper. Nice fella tho. But a loser. Just like our club. Perennial losers. Everyone cheered the lads off the pitch which was great, but we choked and lost.
That cup final loss was brutal. Thought we would win but in hindsight we froze.
However it took Man Utd a long time to win something under Red Nose. Fingers crossed Eddie gets us to another cup final.
Or we win the league next year. Reckon we could go close with good summer Recruitment and no injuries.

Because we are not on the CL?
We were 2/3 years ahead of schedule
One of the worst records for injuries in a season and we finish 7th with the possibility of finishing anywhere from 7th to 5th in the last couple of games.
We should be applauding Eddie and the team for achieving what they have.

As long as Spors isn’t involved in any shady business with the 777 group then he would be good
He seems to have experience of signing physical and also technical players which is what we need more of
Guys who can do the hard yards but can also keep possession the players he signed at Genoa using statistics they are all expected to move for good money this summer Spurs signed that Dragushin in January and he’s quality

Spent fortunes then inherited half a dozen world class players from the youth setup. That stayed for ten years. When they started to retire his team went downhill.

– NEW – Understand #NUFC right-back Kieran Trippier is now very likely to move to Saudi Arabia in the summer window.
Newcastle are willing to accept offers in the region of Ā£15million for the England international, who turns 34 in September – and there are several Saudi Pro League clubs interested in his signature.
Trippier, who joined the Magpies in January 2022, enjoyed two talismanic seasons in black and white – often as captain – but the 23/24 campaign saw a drastic decline in his form, in a campaign which he made several errors leading to detrimental goals conceded.
Newcastle see Tino Livramento as a more than capable first-choice candidate in the right-back position going into next season, with Emil Krafth and exciting youngster Leo Shahar set to be his backups.

Glad he didnāt mate,
The one that got away was SBR⦠I know give me a sec š
When Keegan left we contacted SBR and he agreed to take the job then overnight SBR decided to stay loyal to Barcelona and the end of the year SBR was replaced by LVG.
I always think what could of been if we got SBR then instead of Dalglish who I hate for his dismantling of Keeganās stars

Comment #349Newcastle United’s preseason tour of Japan will bank us around Ā£7m this summer, with Far East electronic and phones company Docomo funding the two-game tour, according to The Chronicle. Add this to the Ā£3m we expected to make from the Australian end of season tour and you can see why they decided to clock up the air miles!
They are also reporting that Newcastle are looking to maximise our income with progress on a training ground sponsor!

Re our last final. I think the players were mega disappointed. They thought they had the beating of Man Utd.
They were right. We stuffed them the next 3 times we played them. Should have beaten them in the last game we played.

Comment #354Last season the vast majority would have been happy with 8th, not all but from comments on here and twitter 8th would have been very satisfactory. So in a funny way then 7th is progression, I think anything less than 7th next season would have to be looked at as regression.
