It is not a surprise, but after being signed less than 18 months ago by Newcastle, Anthony Gordon is our blog’s Player of the Season for 2023/24.
Under Eddie Howe’s guidance, Gordon has improved in leaps and bounds and it says something for Howe’s coaching ability that the (Liverpool lad born) 23 year-old – has made so much raid progress in such a short time.
So there you have it, Gordon looks to be a regular for England (and Newcastle) in the years ahead given his excellent form for England since his debut.
Gordon is our 17th player of the season with 49% of the vote.

Comment #164I rather hope we aren’t the club backing City’s legal action against the Epl.
No financial doping, and certainly no illegal behaviour, such as running two sets of books.
Just regular assessment of the rules to allow well run clubs to punch their weight.
Like any form of government, the Epl should have rules in place that best serve the most interests in the fairest and most functional way.

The Grauniad named NUFC as having an interest in Citeh’s anti-competiton action against the EPL. I suspect that Citeh’s set the ball rolling being more established as one of the EPL’s big hitters, than NUFC – thus keeping NUFC out of the line of fire.
A little conversation between a few folk in the Gulf area and you never know what might come out of it.

Your reference to how a person’s actions resulted in a binned CV roughly exemplified what I alluded to a few days back – posters never know who’s reading The Blog and who might have their CV to consider.

Comment #173Looks like City’s actions are to go to arbitration rather than a full on legal claim which would be a different proposition. How they can claim to be the victims of the ‘tyranny of the majority’ seems ludicrous when they themselves have been part of the slimey six imposing their own tyranny of oppression as a cartel like group restricting competition.
The Times, external says it has seen a 165-page legal document in which City claim they are victims of “discrimination”, that the amended rules were approved by rivals to “stifle” their success on the pitch, and call it “a tyranny of the majority”.

Do you have a brother Rhinestone ?
Spot on post that about the impact on FFP outcomes. City must have spent months on prepping their case. Could be that they expose some dirt on the likes of Chelsea and ManU caught in the crossfire. This could get very revealing.
Can’t help thinking they are lashing out like a naughty kid and trying to fight fire with fire to disrupt the incoming shit storm surrounding their 118 breaches of FFP which can only result in mayhem for them. Loss of titles and trophies ‘bought’ by them along with points deductions that would put them in the National League must be praying on their minds.

Comment #175I noticed that Juventus had withdrawn from their interest in setting up a European Super League . How condescending.
That only leaves Real Madrid and Barcelona of the original protagonists exposed as another example of another cozy cartel trying to look after their own self centred interests.

i see it as city’s legal team testing the water here, seeing how far they can go and just how much backing they have among the other clubs, on the little information we have i see it as a massive risk but one they are prepared to take, i just wounder what evidence they are holding back and which other clubs are backing them if any ??

Love that someone at Seka ‘gets it’. Gets what we”re all about. In one simple promotion they’re showing creativity and fun tuning into the fan base and that puts their brand at the top.
By contrast divvy JR is turning the Old Trafford club into the next Ratners. Where is Sue Ellen when you need her.

Comment #178No wonder City are lashing out with their own legal action.
Manchester City’s hearing over their 115 charges for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules will be heard in November, according to The Times.
Is this the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning ?
No wonder Pep wants out. Just hope we haven’t tapped him up, oh the irony.

From what iv been able to read on the City court case it is an attempt to get out of some of the more serious charges against them!
Something like “we may have broke that rule but the rule was illegal in the first place so shouldn’t count “

Comment #187Reading back over yesterday/last nights comments, going to go ahead with a potentially controversial or hot take…
Discord and more commonly now, the troll, have both been reasons the blog has lost posters and isn’t as popular now as it once was. However, the main reason the blog is as it is, isn’t because of those two reasons, it’s because of regular users of the blog constantly and consistently having the same stupid squabbles/arguements….
Discord has made some posters leave here which has dwindled the numbers and had a negative effect on the blog. However, it was only ever made when the blog looked like it was ending, as an alternative. Which was a very good thing to provide a place to post still when the blog closed down. The reason why people now stay on Discord, is that they take one look at the blog, see the stupid insults, personal comments, point scoring attempts and outright embarrasing squabbling that happens daily and think “Nah, i’ll give that a miss and chat on Discord instead”.
Who can blame them, really? It’s boring as shite seeing the same few posters have the same arguments and name calling every day.
The troll has obviously been an irritant and giving the blog a bad stench. But it’s only because people constantly interact or refer to it, that it sticks around. I’ve tried explaining multiple times it would have stopped ages ago if people ignored it. But people couldn’t and won’t, so it’s still here and continues to be a reason people don’t see the point in posting.
But it’s the regular same few who turn the blog into a schoolyard of name calling and “Miss miss, he said it first not me!” that have turned the blog into what it is. Ironic that people finger point to others and blame them, when they are regularly contributing to the downfall themselves. If you’re reading this and thinking “Well that can’t be me, I only ever stick up for myself and I never start it, I just say it as it is and defend myself”. Well guess what, it is you. You only help continue the arguing and squabbling. Nobody gives a f*ck who started it, it’s childish and I don’t know how the same few who always argue aren’t constantly embarrassed.
It would be so easy to have the blog back to how it was. Stop the childish point scoring, insults, arguing, personal comments, ignore the troll entirely. it’s just that a few posters clearly don’t care and would rather shout and throw insults instead.
May not have the blog for much longer, worth a shot to try and actually have it a decent place to chat about Newcastle again, no?

Agreed, but it was usually just for a day or 2, then it would die down. Then maybe raise it’s head again a few days later. Plus there were far more posters so it was drowned out more with football posts from everyone else. Also there was no alternative. Now the squabbling goes on daily, with fewer posters to drown it out and there’s an alternative where you don’t have to read the same childish shite when trying to talk about football.
It’s the daily arguing, childish jabs at others, personal insults and all round embarrassing fighting which is the biggest downfall.
Anyway, said my piece in the hopes some will take it on board. Doubt it though.
I’ll go back to football chat now myself.

Comment #192Have to say, I won’t be too excited if the Trafford rumours turn out to be true.
He looks to certainly have potential, but I don’t think he’s much better than Pope with his feet, so we wouldn’t be upgrading that aspect. Plus he doesn’t seem as commanding of his area, coming for crosses etc.
As an understudy, it could be a good investment if he fulfills his potential. But with Pope’s shoulder concerns, i’m not sure an understudy is what we need going into next season. We need a goalkeeper of similar high quality to Pope to rotate with, or similar high quality but better at playing out from the back to fight for the number 1 spot and potentially make it their own.
Being linked to Mamardashvili for a long time, it would be a shame if we then signed Trafford as an alternative.

Know where you are coming from. About keepers. Be a lot to shell out, but maybe go for the one all talking about from Georgia I think to battle with Pope and Trafford to study and learn as 3rd choice and league cup etc and maybe in season or 2 be 2nd choice and battling for no 1

Comment #194Adamn…I suppose it all comes down to who he’s replacing in the squad. If it’s Pope, I’m underwhelmed, if it’s Dubravka, I’d get it, if it’s Karius, then i’m delighted.
I didn’t know about Mama, I just killed a man, until he was linked with us and he does look like he’s going to be some player and someone who could / should be genuinely pushing for #1, so I’d get why some will feel this to be somewhat of an anti-climax.
Hard to judge these things at this stage of the summer, as it’s all about the whole team and what other areas we’re going to strengthen.

Mama seems to be the one who could potentially become number 1 and I think has a higher ‘ceiling’ than Trafford. Guess it depends how the club and Howe are currently viewing Pope. Are they happy for him to continue as number 1? He’s certainly good enough to, but will his shoulder be ok? Is his inability to play out from the back concerning them as much as it is some fans?
If they’re happy for Pope to continue to be number 1, then Trafford makes sense and would probably be happy to rotate and be number 2 the majortiy of the time. Replacing Dubs or Karius with him would be a definite upgrade. Mama coming in and with Pope or Mama essentialyl replacing Dubs or Karius would be an even bigger upgrade though.

Comment #197Adamn…I think we’re all (us 3 anyway) on a similar page.
Pope, Mama and Trafford as our 3 GK’s would be amazing, but are we going to be spending circa £50m (probably a bit more I’d guess) on GK’s this window?
I seem to recall rumours that Pope wanted to leave (although I’ve no reason to believe they’re true), but that would force our hand into buying 2 GK’s. Even, Mama, Trafford and Dubravka wouldn’t be a bad selection for Howe to work with.
Do we have any highly rated youth GK’s, that wouldn’t take up a squad place?

Jun 5, 2024 at 10:24 AM
Comment #198It’s a bit of a conundrum re what we do with the GK position. So we have Pope who has just come back from injury where he has now had 2 ops on the same shoulder injury which is a worry for a GK for sure. So do we bring in a top understudy to play second fiddle to Pope and learn from him? That would be Trafford and still not cheap at £20m. Trafford is going to be a top GK in the future that’s for sure, just not right now…
Or do we bring in Mamardashvili for a reported £35m? If we did that then you just know Pope will want to be off to an Ipswich potentially. The thing is that the GK is one of the most important positions in the team to get right as it ensures the back line of defence have trust in their GK. when pope got injured he was replaced with Dubs and our back line suffered terribly because of that, so they’d have to get used to Mamardashvili ASAP. I’m sure that would happen as this kid is a top GK and has the potential to be a top elite. He is also very commanding at the back and a top communicator which is a main ingredient and not to mention one of the best shot stoppers on the planet.
I’d personally go for Mamardashvili, sell Pope and bring in a top youngster. Could that even be Trafford, as I’d reckon we’d get approx £15m for Pope? It will be very interesting who Eddie goes for but if I were a betting man, Eddie will play it safe, keep Popey and buy Trafford as the understudy. It also means we have an extra £20m to put towards a ST, RCB or RW…If that was the case I pray to god Popes shoulder issues hold out, because it would have the potential to derail next season as Trafford is not there at the moment.

Comment #199It could be a tricky situation with a keeper, if Pope did say he wanted to leave if we signed Marmitevashadil then that leaves us having to find another understudy for him, we can’t have another situation where we have Dubs in goal for any length of time, maybe they see Trafford as that ideal understudy that allows us to keep Pope an extra couple of seasons?
Raj of Hailsley
Jun 5, 2024 at 10:29 AM
Comment #200If you cast your minds back there was a lot of people not overly excited with Pope either, I think we’re more getting excited about Marmitevashadil simply because he’s foreign. If we’re being brutally honest how many of us have watched more than his You Tube clips, I’ve certainly not watched a Valencia game, not watched much of Trafford either mind but he is in the provisional England squad despite his age.
