It is not a surprise, but after being signed less than 18 months ago by Newcastle, Anthony Gordon is our blog’s Player of the Season for 2023/24.
Under Eddie Howe’s guidance, Gordon has improved in leaps and bounds and it says something for Howe’s coaching ability that the (Liverpool lad born) 23 year-old – has made so much raid progress in such a short time.
So there you have it, Gordon looks to be a regular for England (and Newcastle) in the years ahead given his excellent form for England since his debut.
Gordon is our 17th player of the season with 49% of the vote.

I think the Pope story was a case of journalists doing the classic 2+2 = 5.
Stories of bids for Mama and given his reputation and ability, chances are he would sign with intention of being number 1. Pope being number 1 would probably be a bit niffed and want to be a starter, so would look to move.
Realistically, I doubt Pope has asked to leave and I doubt the players actually get told too much about any bids for players the club is making anyway? Unless it’s at an advanced stage and basically done?
Think Pope will be here next season and we have Gillespie staying, so think it’s either a keeper to play second fiddle and rotate, or push Pope for that starting position. Just depends how much we want to splash on a goalkeeper.

Comment #202If we sign Marmitevashadil for £35M+ then he’s here for the next ten years if he’s any good, that doesn’t allow you to sign a keeper with designs on being England number one as his understudy. I think, as much as I’d like us to sign the Georgian because he’s got a fancy name, I think a more sound long term strategy would be to get Trafford.

Comment #203I have to say I am not as convinced by Mama as some others. He looks a big imposing lad and seems like an excellent shot stopper but I haven’t seen enough to convince me his distribution, and ball control are anything above and beyond what we already have with Pope.
He’s younger though with potential, so he can be coached into that type of sweeper keeper. But personally, if signing him meant we’d lose Pope then I’d prefer to keep Pope for another year, save a few quid on Trafford as the understudy and use the money to invest elsewhere.

Spot on. I’ve been hanging on by a thread to this blog due to the antics of a few but I really enjoy reading this blog for its articles and comments when it’s like it has been this morning., so I have so far clung on.

Comment #206Adamn…That’s exactly what I think of the Pope rumours too.
I’d forgotten about Gillespie honestly. I know, our recent penalty hero…shameful on my part. Even less likely we’ll be buying 2 GK’s who will both take a squad place then.
Raj…I’m starting to think that most of us only want Mama told me not to come to be signed is for the fun we can have with the name.

It was Bruce himself, apparently, that said he fancied the Leicester job, live on Talksport. I never listen to that station so didn’t hear it myself.

Sounds very reasonable. Guess it all depends on how much potential Trafford has and if he can reach it. I wasn’t overly convinced by him this season, but maybe that’s due to a poor defence in front of him too?
Mama for £35m and potential to be number 1 for the next decade, could prove a wiser use of money than £20m-£25m for Trafford to be understudy 1 year but then need replacing in a year or 2 if he doesn’t improve much. Which going by his performance this season, i’m not convinced he can go much higher.
Happy to be completely wrong on Trafford though.

Comment #209I don’t know anything about keepers, but I’m not sure it’s considered a priority position where we’d spend big money. I think it will also depend on how well Pope has recovered mentally as well as physically from his injury.

Comment #210Personally believe that if we signed Tosin on that free, we’d have gone in for Mamardashvili and with Trafford as the understudy.
I think NUFC will stick with Pope and bring in Trafford as the understudy. I’ve had x3 dislocated shoulders, 2 operations to pin it (called harpoons) and once it goes it’s never the same. I know Pope would have the best surgery and the best physio, but all it will take is a dodgy fall and it’s gone again. Our medical team will know and all the information will be fed back into Eddie. It’s going to one hell of a huge gamble hoping it doesn’t go again. Also worth noting will Pope be a wee bit more hesitant on making diving saves as the injury is in his head. When training I’m always worried and hesitant about my shoulder.
I do hope Eddie goes after Mamardashvili look at how Alison transformed Liverpool, Mamardashvili could easily do the same for us plus we cannot afford another Pope injury. Too much riding on next season.

Comment #211Cheik…Howay man ya usually a sensible lad but “no stomach for a fight” is a ridiculous thing to say. BTW as for picket lines, I’m from a pit village and still have my house there. Also did 12 years in the army and 4 here as a volunteer firefighter (been smack bang in the middle of the 2 largest fires they’ve ever had here) so I’ve plenty stomach for the fight. Some went to join discord because of the troll, I did used to find that strange as personally I had no problems skipping over the trolls posts as they’re easy to spot and skip past. Some obviously couldn’t and didn’t want to read his bile so fair enough that’s their choice. I’d had enough when I was having to skip through 70-80% of post because of the pathetic, childish bickering going on here. Also I got sick of being in the army being used on here as a form of abuse. There will be a few ex forces on here who will have seen things that most of you won’t have imagined in your worst nightmares. I’m not expecting nor wanting anyone to respect the UK armed forces and I can understand why some of the Irish lads have a gripe with the forces, I’m just saying have a bit of consideration for people who have been thru some things you’re lucky enough not to have. On that Munster, I did 12 years and in all that time I only ever met 2 squaddies who were “anti-Irish” and both those lads were Northern Irish. Using the army to abuse Fenham is stupid anyway because as far as I know (apologies if wrong), he was never a squaddie, never in the army, he was in the Marines, not even a branch of the army. I’m 57 and I’m at the stage in my life where if I don’t enjoy something then I’m not fukn doing it(unless wor lass makes me). They enjoy the bickering imo, they always have an excuse for it, “he was nasty to me first”, “I offered peace but it was rejected”, “this is how I am in real life, I don’t back down from a fight” boo fukn hoo. Trust me in real life know fuka on here suffers fools less than me or is more argumentative. It’s easy to ignore on here if you want. The ones involved are showing way more disrespect to Ed than anyone who is on Discord. Well I’m fukn rambling, I keep looking in here to see if it improves but it doesn’t. I’ll get back to enjoying my life.

Comment #212Pope is more than capable to be number 1 next season, my biggest concern is his shoulder. Not good to have had 2 surgeries on it. Which is why I think a keeper to challenge him for number 1 is, personally, more important than an understudy.
I’m not convinced by Trafford yet, having seen him a few times this season, that he could step in and challenge Pope for that starting spot. Where as I feel like Mama could do that right away.

Comment #213One last thing as I’d like at my last comment at least to be a footy one. Reference Mamardashvili, he’s an awesome shotstopper, dominates his box well and I’ve no doubt he’ll be a world ie but if anyone is expecting him to be good with his feet you’re in for a shock. He’ll improve no doubt but when I’ve seen him he’s no better than we have and possibly worse.

Comment #214Think defence is more interesting to see what we do in the summer than goalkeeper anyway, in my opinion.
Schar was sensational this season, barely missed a game and is crucial to how we play with his ability to drive forward when space opens up, or use his incredible range of passing. Is it fair to say he’s in conversation as the best ball playing center back in the world? Are there many (any?) better than him?
Botman is ok at passing out from the back, but nowhere near the levels Schar is. Kelly looks to be coming in, but again, his playing out from the back is nowhere near Schars class.
So if we are looking for a younger center back to partner Botman over the long term, who is going to be able to do what Schar does so well?
I think Schar and Botman will be our partnership next season when Botman recovers. With any defender coming in, being rotational and having to earn their starting spot.
Schar is close to being an impossible player to replace. There just aren’t many central defenders with his level of ability on the ball.

Comment #217If we are going for Marmitevashadil and he is a ball playing keeper then we’ll need a defensive upgrade as I think only Schar is comfortable playing out from the back. Yes Burn did it at Brighton but not sure if him, Botman OK. hall and Livramento have not seen enough of
Lascalles not Trippier not sure

Comment #218Adamn…So you start the GK discussion and now “defense is more interesting”?
Next it’ll be midfield. I’m on to you, trying to spur on football discussion. Shameful behaviour.
Schar has been amazing for us. What a buy he turned out to be. I don’t think his replacement is the urgency right now and I’m only partly using that to avoid having to answer the underlying question of who could be a decent option – as I haven’t a clue.

Fair enough pal I hear you, I do also understand where Check is coming from at the same time. Personally, I feel it would be so much better if everyone came back on here and see it out to the end and drowned out the spats. I do apologise from my side as I am just as much to blame than anyone But hand on heart I’m genuinely on here to craic on with other people who are of like minded and NUFC daft as me. In the real world, I get on with everyone, never argue even with the wife. (She’s the boss you see).
I appreciate why you’re on discord I really do as you can get on with the main craic of talking about NUFC without petty disturbances etc. but honestly mate you’re a huge miss on here and you left a void when you left that needs filled. It would be hugely fitting if the likes of yourself, TMQ, CBob, Clint Flick, Flurz, Toon Fans Bad/Uncertain Toon, TDS, Pug, dazzler, TGM, Dubai M, transfer Sage, toonarmy of frogs, ZG, Hoboken Toon. Could all do as Jail does and post on both sides of the fence if need be. It would ensure Dr Eds blog goes out with a bang and not a pop which would be sad. If it means I remove myself from here so it takes away the oxygen of the fire I’d happily loiter in the background.

Honestly i’m the same as you about any potential replacement though. There’s obviously fantastic young defenders out there who could replace him, but they wouldn’t replace what he brings to the team, which is essential to how we play currently.

Certain players bring certain things to the team and when replaced, the style / tactics shifts with what the newer players bring.

I’m not sure how that works, at 21 and already in the England team then Trafford surely sees himself as a possible England Number one, not sure why he’d sign up to be an understudy to a £35M+ guy who might be here ten years, he’d more likely join up here to be understudy to Pope for the next couple of seasons knowing he will retire, Tosin or not I couldn’t see us spending £55M on two keepers and why would one of them want to join.

I know I thought that to tbh mate re if we signed a 23 year old Mamardashvili and had an up and coming 21 year old Trafford. The GK second choice rarely gets games, maybe do what city do and play them in the cups.
If we keep Pope (huge risk) then it will be Trafford we bring in as an understudy and a very decent one at that. If we do sign Mamardashvili then I believe Pope will move on, then it’s who do we also bring in as GK No2? Looking at it from your perspective, I agree it doesn’t make sense that Trafford comes in as second choice and for a potential 10 years as Mama is only 23.
If I thought Pope would stay injury free this season I’d say get Trafford as the understudy. But it’s that bloody awful shoulder injury he has had and the 2 operations that worries me. It will be interesting how this plays out though.

Comment #239Don’t know what to make of the City case.
On one hand I can see why, as the league dictating what is fair price seems a bit mad.
On the other hand, if there is no regulations in place, teams like us and City can just do obscene party/sponsor transactions at inflated prices, never have to worry about FFP again and other teams without that financial power will be left in the dust. So won’t make the league competitive and would create an even more closed shop.
There needs to be a sensible middle ground so clubs like us and Man City can’t just create pretty much infinite wealth and avoid FFP whenever we wish.
To me, this more feels like Man City know they are guilty of the 115 charges they face and are trying to scare the league with their own lawsuits to make them drop the charges or let them off.
