It is not a surprise, but after being signed less than 18 months ago by Newcastle, Anthony Gordon is our blog’s Player of the Season for 2023/24.
Under Eddie Howe’s guidance, Gordon has improved in leaps and bounds and it says something for Howe’s coaching ability that the (Liverpool lad born) 23 year-old – has made so much raid progress in such a short time.
So there you have it, Gordon looks to be a regular for England (and Newcastle) in the years ahead given his excellent form for England since his debut.
Gordon is our 17th player of the season with 49% of the vote.

Comment #244Great point by Sanjay, you can see where his thoughts lie:
“ We’ll see if James Trafford signs or not – but the last time a #NUFC signing got this much stick from the fans was back in January 2023.
A certain 21 year-old winger who hadn’t had a great season at a poor PL side, but had clear potential.
And we all know how that turned out.”

I see the Keeper debate has resurfaced today, and i can see the merits in both sides of the debate in which Keeper we should sign!! Needless to say Mamardashvili seems to be the favourite option of the majority of the fanbase.
Personally i just can`t see us dishing out a large chunk of our budget on a keeper to be honest, so from my perspective we will go for young James Trafford or someone simular, but i think James Trafford would be an excellent understudy to Nick Pope.
In conclusion even young Alice seems to be on the same wavelength as me on young James Trafford 😀 😀

Comment #249Does anyone else get the feeling that we will just get used to spelling Mamardashvili then like Szoboszlai we just master the spelling then find out we’re not signing him 😳
Some remarkable similarities between the 2 situations mind and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if it ends the same . Hope not though 😉

We signed a highly rated young keeper last summer, Reece Byrne.
No idea how he’s progressing though or if he’s as good as was reported when we signed him.
I imagine there’s still a long way to go for him to get near a squad place, can’t remember ever hearing about him being near the first team for training or anything.
Maybe someone else has more info on how and at what level he’s been playing this year.

Comment #261Fenners if and when we all sadly have to migrate to Discord, I’m going to try to start with a clean slate with the guys I have rucked with.
Regarding the keepers I’d rather get Mama as I’m far from convinced re Trafford.
Maybe we can get a guy abroad who is better with feet than Mama.
This is a huge summer for the club and we have already missed out on Tosin so let’s hope for better soon
Kelly is a decent one to get for sure, I really like him and I think he will put real pressure on to get the LB berth.

What should we judge him on? It’s his only season at this level (Premier League) and personally wasn’t that convinced!
Young and clearly talented, just not excited by him and not sure how high that potential will realistically go.

He is still considered a youth player at this age and played for a very poor Burnley side in the toughest league in the world.
Let’s not forget what he has done before this season and why he was so highly valued.
Look at Big Joe and Schar. How much of the fanbase do you think wanted them out at one point or said they were shit etc etc…?
Big Joe as you and I always said had something about him and always seen a player in him but neither me or you could ever envisage what we have today. The majority tho wanted him gone
The lad has huge potential and would flourish here. Easily be England’s No1 in the future

I’ll guarantee you this…
If he gets another shoulder dislocation and we’ve signed a relatively young GK as a No.2 who struggles in the first team…
All hell will break loose at how stupid the club have been.
Another thing… if we signed this Mama or another GK for big dosh as a No.1 and Pope wanted to leave… who would sign a GK of his age with two shoulder dislocations? Not any Prem or even top Champs club that’s for sure.
If I was in EH’s shoes I’d be wanting a top keeper signed, gambling on Pope staying fit is a risk too big to take.
The downside is that Pope’s shoulder and Lascelles and Botman’s ACL’s have affected where we can and want to spend this summer. Tosin going Chelsea on a free hasn’t helped at all.
Eddie and the transfer team have some big decisions to make in this transfer market.
Both in… and out.

Afternoon mate
In reference to Red Stripe not guilty, it was Sir Pug who was downing it like it was going out of fashion 😀
On the keeper situation, obviously Mamaradashvili seems to be the preferred option by most fans, although i honestly don`t think it`s the most realistic due to the FFP constraints, i just don`t see us spending a large proportion of our budget on a keeper mate, but sure what do i know 😀 😀

Nearly 6’6″ tall and 14 stone.
With Steve Botman and BDB in front of him that’s going to scare most attackers away and certainly reduce the threat of aerial crosses and incoming headers. In the same way that Haarland is bossing the penalty box for City, Mamardashvil will boss and command the defensive penalty box and like Schmeichael (who was 6’4″) used to be, become a real presence for the team to look up to (literally) an inspire confidence.
Imagine a ‘spine’ of
Mamardashvili – Botman/BDB/Schar – Bruno/Tonali/Big Joe – Isak with Barnes and Gordon hovering on the wings.
That’s a thing of beauty.
We don’t know the longer term extent of Nick Pope’s injury and it could be that Mamardashvili is destined to be No1 and Pope No2.
We’re 3 years into the new era and next season is where the expectation of success moves into top gear. The PIF are ready to launch the new stadium plans and with that level of investment in infrastructure and players there’s nowhere to hide. We need a team that takes no prisoners and has a winning Grand Slam type mentality. There will be no room for passengers. Without the distraction of the Europa Conference League the target set to Howe is to deliver Top 4 and even more.
Some other teams such as Spurs, Liverpool, ManU and even Arsenal could fall way or at least be inconsistent. Villa may not be able to sustain or repeat last seasons success.
I expect the Top 4 places to be competed for by City, United,Chelsea and one other of the rest.
Get Mamardashvili and he could become a cult hero and player of the season.
This is the dawning of the age of toon.
Renaissance.
Lets Kick ass.

Young James Trafford has been selected on the England provisional squad for the forthcoming European Championship, so they obviously value the lad extremely highly, both Mamardashvili or James Trafford will do for me, both highly rated quality keepers lads.

Comment #272I disagree that we should spend big bucks on a keeper.
Unlike all other positions, keeper’s very rarely get subbed, unless injured. Even on a bad day, they stay put.
We have the best keeper in our history. The next level isn’t Mama or Trafford. The next level is Allison.
So, the only reason we’re shopping is in case of injury. If we had unlimited funds hell bring two new ones.
But we don’t. And we need at least two outfield players who are the quality of the Palace lads. AND, a prospective young 9 with bags of potential.
Those three alone I’m guessing we can’t “”afford “” (plenty of quotes).
Concentrate on priorities.
PS. Should Pope get injured you may shoot me ;). But we’ll still have a couple of decent keeper’s to cover until January.

Comment #274But….here’s the concern, the risk of a third injury needs to be insured against
Most people make a full recovery after dislocating their shoulder. Even if you need surgery, you should be able to return to most or all your activities and sports after your shoulder has healed. You’re much more likely to re-injure a shoulder you’ve dislocated before.

Comment #277I agree with the insurance. But we do have other able keepers who, in all likelihood, won’t be needed, so it will be an investment/ insurance sitting on the bench.
We need to up our game as a priority, in visible terms.
I’d even go with just one super player and forego other positions, if necessary. Top players who are better than your Villa – Spurs type don’t come cheap.
Isn’t it them who we’re gunning for?

Mine’s chicken nuggets with a side order of fries.
Wor B’s paying as he’s the bagman for os blogger’s on tour.
McDonald’s no longer has the exclusive right to use the label “Big Mac” in reference to chicken burgers sold in the European Union after a ruling by the EU’s highest court.
The American fast-food chain popularised the nickname for large burger sandwiches, registering it as a trademark in the EU in 1996.
But following a legal challenge from Supermac’s, a rival chain in Ireland, other companies will now be free to use the name “Mac” to sell poultry products or in their chains’ names.
