Dr. Edward S Harrison (1944-2024)

My father, Edward Harrison passed away today, June 13th 2024 at 1:30PM EST, which equates to 6:30PM in his beloved Newcastle upon Tyne. He is survived by his wife Madeline, son Paul, myself and my wife, daughter Elaine, and older brother Rodney Harrison.

My father started The Newcastle United Blog in 2007 and kept it going, at times sparingly, until earlier this month. His final post announced Anthony Gordon winning the blog’s 17th annual Player of the Season award.

Dr. Ed’s passions in life spanned many areas but nothing could compare to his love of Newcastle United. As many Geordies before and after him, this club held a special place in his heart.

I would like to personally thank all of the readers of this blog who made this endeavor a special one for my father. He was one of a kind, and we will miss him.

With love,

Neil Harrison

If it wasn’t for Ed I would never have had the opportunity to speak to fellow mags from around the world. I joined this blog as a young man and left it an adult. It will always hold a special place in my heart for that.

Rip you absolute legend. Condolences to your family Neil.

Neil….the fact that you took the time on this very day to actually write a new blog post says it all. Sorry for your loss and thank you for your past contributions over the years as well. Dr Ed I believe was the epitome of the Geordie spirit, ethos, culture, ethic…however you want to put it. I grew up watching the show Cheers and every time I walked into this blog space I felt like we all knew each other…the good, the bad, the ugly, the highs, the lows, etc…but it was Dr. Ed’s…the greatest Geordie pub around.

Neil & Jessie and rest of family

Just want to pass on my condolences and love. Know exactly what you are going through with me losing my Dad only almost 8 weeks ago. So hard and never known anything like it, just have to remember all of the good times and I know you will have so many.

The word legend is used far too much and easily throughout football, but have to say Dr Ed was a true ledgend. He started this blog off 17 years ago and has kept us all going and up to date over the years. Throughout the pandemic, this was the place to go for some kind of normality and keep us all up to date with our football. I did manage to get Gavin to log on and read the blog, shame he never posted.

On a personal note, in the weeks leading up to my Dad passing and just after he did, the people on here became almost like family, well wishes aplenty even couple of cards through the door, so again want to say thanks to everyone. Just want you and family to take care of yourselves and know that we are all here for you if ever want to talk or need anything even if so far away. Just want to pass on my thanks for everything

Just wish it could have been arranged to fly Dr Ed over for a game and half time pitch appearance. Hopefully directors might think about doing it for you and the family Neil, to show how much you and more do your Dad has done for the worldwide fan base

Many condolences Neil, I never met your dad but I wish I’d had the chance. Proud to have a Geordie state side flying the flag as proudly and vibrantly as he did. We’ve lost a warrior with a huge heart.

Neil, I created this account just to say thank you. I was an early reader back when there was nowhere else to turn for overseas fans. Ed’s articles and blog were my go-to for the latest, unbiased information on the club.

Ed’s writing wasn’t just unbiased; it was always well-crafted and full of a gentle warmth that’s hard to find. I hope this blog continues. If it doesn’t, the articles should be kept – the last two seasons are a story in themselves!

He showed up even when the club didn’t. By doing so, he built a community in an online world that needed it the most. This community will live on, and for that, I thank him and you for your strength during this time. Wishing you and the family all the best in the tough times ahead.

In those inevitable bumps, I hope you find peace in the comments here and remember what your father built.

    Elliot
