Dr. Edward S Harrison (1944-2024)

My father, Edward Harrison passed away today, June 13th 2024 at 1:30PM EST, which equates to 6:30PM in his beloved Newcastle upon Tyne. He is survived by his wife Madeline, son Paul, myself and my wife, daughter Elaine, and older brother Rodney Harrison.

My father started The Newcastle United Blog in 2007 and kept it going, at times sparingly, until earlier this month. His final post announced Anthony Gordon winning the blog’s 17th annual Player of the Season award.

Dr. Ed’s passions in life spanned many areas but nothing could compare to his love of Newcastle United. As many Geordies before and after him, this club held a special place in his heart.

I would like to personally thank all of the readers of this blog who made this endeavor a special one for my father. He was one of a kind, and we will miss him.

With love,

Neil Harrison

Dr Ed created the go-to site for many of us Toon diehards and moderated it with decency and an obvious love for the club and the city. We followed his personal journey through illness for years and admired his quiet dignity and his determination to continue with his mission to inform and inspire debate. I hope the club will find a way to mark the passing of such a distinguished part of its more recent history. Deep condolences to Ed’s family for their loss of a fine man.

That’s devastating news and my thoughts are with you and your family Neil. The community he created from over the pond speaks volumes for the value Dr Ed put on life and connecting people. He was an innovator, a mentor and a shining light who has set examples in life that many of us will follow. I’m very sad but will be celebrating his life and achievements. What a man. We were lucky to be around him. Namaste ?

Sincere sympathies to the Harrison family.

The best legacy we can give to Ed is to somehow keep this band of blog members, that he created, together.

Ed may have passed away, but the best way to remember him and keep him in our hearts is that this community doesn’t pass away with him.

    RIP Ed…

You’ve given me years of enjoyment on this blog posting about our beloved NUFC. My heartfelt thanks.

Neil, I am so sorry to hear your sad news. Your father, Ed, began and ran one of the most insightful and thoughtful blogs on the web. Always to the point, no sensationalism, no clickbait, just interesting and honest views on our beloved club.
I had the pleasure of swapping emails with him on various topics from time to time. He was always courteous and friendly, even on the rare occasions we saw things from a different angle.
    I will miss him.
My sincere and deepest condoloences to you and your family. I’m sure that he will be remembered for much in his life but here, on this corner of the web, his legendary NUFCBlog will stand as a memorial known and remembered by many thousands of Newcastle supporters

    To the Harrison family,
Deeply saddened to hear that Dr ED has passed away, what a fighter and what an inspiration to all
Followed his fight against cancer as we lost our father in law last year after a 6 year battle, was truly amazed at his strength and determination and his acceptance of the horrible disease.
May he now in peace amongst the rest of legends.

Great idea about wor flags, sure they will do something, what a way to start first game of season if they do

On another note, been mentioned already but bravery of Ed to openly talk about illness is great. With any luck, maybe got some of us to get regular checks as we all need that kind of push. The man truly was a one off in all areas

    To the Harrison Family,

Ed fought a long and brave fight, which you can be so proud of and he is an inspiration to us all for how he fought that most terrifying and terrible of all diseases. He is like the brightest star in the sky that will never be extinguished…

May loving memories of your Ed help you find peace at this saddest of times for you. As a Geordie I am sending my deepest condolences to you and wishing you all strength and comfort.

“If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I’d walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again.” “Although it’s difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, May looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.” “Grief is itself a medicine.”
