This is my starting eleven prediction for Saturday’s match against Southampton at St. James’ Park. As you can see, I expect there to be no real surprises with Eddie Howe’s team tomorrow.
Newcastle haven’t been very active in the market this summer despite bringing in four new first-team faces (Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy, Odysseas Vlachodimos, William Osula). The only newcomer with a shout at a start would be Lloyd Kelly. Though I expect Big Dan Burn to get the nod and potentially the captain’s armband.
Other areas of potential contention are at right-back and left-wing. Tino Livramento has gotten the bulk of the minutes in preseason though Kieran Trippier arrived late after appearing in the Euros. I wouldn’t be gobsmacked if Howe went with Trippier for his experience though Tino may have done enough to get the start.
As with Trippier, Anthony Gordon arrived on Tyneside late after the European Championships. After a stellar 2023/24 campaign, the 23-year-old is one of the handful of superstars in the squad. If Howe feels his fitness levels are where they need to be, Gordon gets the nod over Harvey Barnes.
It’s very early with no marquee additions and a few Magpies still recovering from injury. The selection drama may be low key for now with hopes of some future headaches for Howe on the horizon.

That’s a good question but I don’t know the answer!
However I can recall the crush getting the gates at the end of a game!

Comment #10The price for Guehi is too high and Palace doesn’t really need the money. And probably don’t want to sell him this window.
Take the 70M… scour the continent for the best RCB that 40-50M can buy and take 20M-30M plus some and buy a RW. Pedro Neto would have been a nice addition. Too bad he’s now at CFC

Comment #11Possibly the only way that Palace would have considered a bid would have been if Guehi was pushing for the move. But never really heard any rumblings that he really wanted. Just speculation he was open to it due his friendships with Gordon, hall, and tiny from England youth days

Comment #16I wonder if Tonali will replace Longstaff when he becomes available. Wishful thinking perhaps. I think Livramento might be better as a wing back than a winger, and I think Hall would do a good job in that role on the other side.

Comment #20Not starting Barnes and Tino would be a knock back, especially against a promoted side. 5 subs means the professional sport is a squad game and we need to manage the squad properly over the season.

Comment #22Two signings around £20m will do me, fill out the squad and add competition for places.
Ângelo Gabriel Is 19 with resale value, if a little under whelming currently and no better than what we have on the right wing.
Andreas Christensen Is 28yo experienced and like Chris Wood, will be a success if he helps us secure CL and gets sold again at only half his price.

Comment #23“”Ahead of that game, Oliver Glasner spoke to the media, and addressed Guehi’s future.
“Marc trained today with us,” he said. “We talked together. I have no other information. I have to look at my bank account if something came in – but it doesn’t look like it!””
—————————
A glib statement which I presume is about what the manager has the ability to spend in the transfer market. But it did make me wonder what sort of bonuses are managers making when players are sold?

Comment #24In reality this season is a mini league of six to be the top two teams.
Chelsea
Liverpool
ManU
Newcastle
Spurs
Villa
Although Villa may drop off and be replaced by W.Ham. The season will be about who can take the most points off the other ‘six’ and maybe get a point off Arsenal or ManC.
We definitely have the advantage of not being in Europe and hopefully that will transpire into a cup final. Which will definitely compensate for not achieving CL qualification, but will probably lead to our elite players leaving. So we will then be dependent on the next generation of players, or Mitchell signings to compete on two fronts, twice a week. But let’s get this exciting season kicked off first.

Comment #26morning all, a couple of bits from sky here
Crystal Palace are set to reject a fourth bid worth around £65m plus add-ons from Newcastle for 24-year England centre-back Marc Guehi. (Sky Sports),
Newcastle are not ready to walk away from a deal for Guehi just yet but the club is considering it’s option, (Sky Sports),
Palace have agreed personal terms with French centre-back Maxence Lacroix, 24, and are pushing for a deal with his club Wolfsburg. (Sky Germany – in

Comment #27Did we not walk away from the AG deal at first, maybe they’ll just say don’t bother and try again in January, rely on Schar, Burn, Kelly and Krafth if it saves £10M????

Comment #28If we don’t sign Guehi, one of the good things is that Chelsea won’t get around £20m sell on. Contracts like that should be banned. They allow clubs like Chelsea to hoard and hide assets in other clubs and to encourages them to buy up young talents at inflated prices. They also inflate the price when sold on.
I’d be happy for our money not to go to Chelsea. In fact, it would be really good if several other clubs also nearly bought several players and then pulled out just before the end of the txfer window, leaving them with players they can’t register.

Comment #33Either Eddie is over obsessed with prem experience or there is a massive shortage of RCB’s out there but 70m for Guehi is too much. He was valued at 40m pre Euros apparently.

Comment #40I really feel that the club are doing everything they possibly can to get Guehi over the line to have the future England back line especially when we finally sign Trafford also:
_____________Trafford (Eng)_____________
Tino(Eng)_Guehi(Eng)_Botman(Ned_Hall(Eng
That is some future England back line with a Dutch beast thrown in. Mouth watering!!
