Burn, Livramento, And Longstaff Start Against Southampton At St. James’ Park

Here is Eddie Howe’s first team selection of the new campaign as the Magpies host Southampton at St. James’ Park. As expected, he didn’t spring any surprises except that Bruno Guimaraes captains the team as he did once in preseason.

It’s a strong bench with plenty of attacking options in Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, Miguel Almiron, and William Osula. Martin Dubravka remains the number two for the time being.

This is the team Russell Martin has named for the Saints with local man Adam Armstrong getting the call.

Newcastle’s aim is to start the season with all three points against a team that bounced straight back up after relegation. It could be difficult as it’s early days and there may be kinks to iron out. Hopefully, the lads will be up for the challenge.

Howay The Lads!

Joelinton has been sensational and Isak you can tell is trying. Everyone else has been poor.

Liveramento is just not ready, neither is hall imo.

Trippier will start the next match.

Schar really let us down there. He should know better. He always has had that something that has held him back from being sought after by so called bigger clubs around Europe and we just saw it there.

    The Prince’s

Southampton are playing well out wide. On Halls side Gordon was staying up and they got in behind twice. Bruno asked Gordon for help back there by the looks of it.

Walker Pete and Brereton doubling up on the right and making life difficult for Livramento. Again they’ve got in behind on a couple of occasions.

I think Hall looks a little lost at times.

I think Targett will come in at left back soon

Great finish by big Joe for the goal. Nice pass from Isak to find him.

I just can’t get over how cool and calm Isak is out there! He intercepts the poor pass from their keeper, calmly looks up, sees Joelinton and makes a beautiful pass through several defenders for the goal! Isak truly is special!

probably the worst performance from Bruno in a black and white shirt.

I think newcastle actually play better with trippier. he’s very intelligent when newcastle are in possession

very disjointed performance even before the idiotic red

No doubt we’re lack a lot of sharpness. First game of the season against a team we’re not familiar with. Not unusual but certainly not welcome either.
Eddy has a few things to sort out in the dressing room at half time

We haven’t been good, but Southampton have been very good. Was a harsh red card imo but Schar should know better than hoying his head towards anyone., silly lad.

Lukes 100% and Trippier doesn’t misplaced the type od passes that Tino did today.

I’m so disappointed in him the past 6 months he just doesn’t look like half the player he did in the early days.

absolute and utter disgrace. The ref should be embarrassed that he got fooled by that. Neto should be suspended for half the season and all our players should get a free run at him until he’s literally on the ground crying in pain. There’s no place for that pussy shit in sport and is the main reason why a lot of people do not take soccer seriously. Neto should be the one with the red card. Tackled scharf from behind long after the whistle, dove like a little bitch and got the yellow afterwards for not receiving treatment. 3 yellows in one play. They’re constantly allowed to pull at and take out Gordon and Bruno without cards stopping our ability to get up field. It’s a disgrace

Hall is out of his depth. Needs a loan out to championship. We need a new LB i said last season we should go for Grimaldo. Grimaldo and Targett/Kelly as LB options.

Get Kelly on now for LB

With all the excitment of pre season ,at the very least i expected this game , like many others as an opportunity of us to showcase our intentions for the season, we are haunted to be leading this game, southhampton are not clinical enough, we just need to hold on for a few more minutes
