Burn, Livramento, And Longstaff Start Against Southampton At St. James’ Park

Here is Eddie Howe’s first team selection of the new campaign as the Magpies host Southampton at St. James’ Park. As expected, he didn’t spring any surprises except that Bruno Guimaraes captains the team as he did once in preseason.

It’s a strong bench with plenty of attacking options in Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, Miguel Almiron, and William Osula. Martin Dubravka remains the number two for the time being.

This is the team Russell Martin has named for the Saints with local man Adam Armstrong getting the call.

Newcastle’s aim is to start the season with all three points against a team that bounced straight back up after relegation. It could be difficult as it’s early days and there may be kinks to iron out. Hopefully, the lads will be up for the challenge.

Howay The Lads!

Big Joe MOTM followed by Bruno.

Craig Pawson is a crap ref.

Adam Armstrong is crap glad we sold him. He is only 5′ tall and his legs are 18″ long.

    Big Joe Motm obviously.

All three midfielders did an immense job… made it impossible for Southampton in the middle.

I thought Livramento was incredible in the second half. Southampton never got past him on the right.

Lloyd is clearly a better LB than Hall.

that all said..i hated every minute watching the last hour of that game

Several positives from the game, as well as the obvious negatives. Positives:
    1. Kelly looked solid when he came on
    2. Joe was immense.
    3. Bruno always seems to have a slow start to each season, but he was running on gas at the end and gave everything
    4. That siege mentality in the second half was amazing
Brereton-Diaz can be summed up by his performance today. Shithousery of the highest quality to get Schar sent, and then missing the two easiest chances of the day. He’s nowhere near EPL standard, wouldn’t surprise me if Schar scores more goals than him over the season

The sending off ruined the match as spectacle today, it was just sheer doggedness resilience and brute determination that got us over the line, not to mention tremendous strength of character. Eddie and the whole coaching staff deserve so much credit for creating these very admirable characteristics.

Best news is that the antics of their player and the ref even the linesman just galvanised our determination to give nowt away.

Win ugly but win it is.
    That’s a trait we’ve been lacking.
The squad will now be stronger for today.

Gordon and Isak both looked tired, is that a post World Cup issue ?

BigJoe MOM but Tino not far behind.
