Burn, Livramento, And Longstaff Start Against Southampton At St. James’ Park

Here is Eddie Howe’s first team selection of the new campaign as the Magpies host Southampton at St. James’ Park. As expected, he didn’t spring any surprises except that Bruno Guimaraes captains the team as he did once in preseason.

It’s a strong bench with plenty of attacking options in Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, Miguel Almiron, and William Osula. Martin Dubravka remains the number two for the time being.

This is the team Russell Martin has named for the Saints with local man Adam Armstrong getting the call.

Newcastle’s aim is to start the season with all three points against a team that bounced straight back up after relegation. It could be difficult as it’s early days and there may be kinks to iron out. Hopefully, the lads will be up for the challenge.

Howay The Lads!

If the ref had clamped down on Southampton’s antics from the start, thatched card might not have happened

If we give Big Joe the armband he’d put the opposition in hospital! 😀 absolute unit!

Agreed, he ruined the game. Useless performance by him. I hope we appeal the replay clearly shows a dive, but he let them off with so much before and after. So happy we got the win. Massively deserved.

Pictures of a Southampton player coming back down the tunnel steps at half time to challenge BDB.

    Hello ref ?

If Schar didn’t touch the diving twat then it’s not a red card. Why didn’t VAR step in. Because they didn’t see the refs obvious mistake as well ?

    Brown envelope territory again.

Yeah Bigjim I love Toon 😀

And Almiron can play n10 so he’s a more central player than Barnes. Was not happy Barnes fooked up that ball from Isak

Ref ignored their fouls, shirt pulling, obstruction and chat back. Half the time it looked like he was on a date night with them.

    Not fit for Premiership.
Will he be dropped down a league now ?

With our current midfield we are so much better as a counter attacking team keeping the midfield compact

When we try to high press teams comfortable on the ball we just get carved open easily that space where a DM should be exposed countless times until we got to half time

Joelinton was immense we have missed him

Isak with a great assist but again he just can’t hold the ball up means we can never take the pressure off which happens a lot in the Premier league

Ultimately because we haven’t signed any players we will have a lot of the same issues until we sign players

Couldn’t believe the only yellow card for so long was Hall. But then again he didn’t even give free kicks for a lot of their stuff. How many times was Bruno fouled in that first period. They’d obviously targeted him and the ref let them get away with it.
This must have been Martin’s special preparation that he said he was keeping secret

Also hoping Tonali is going to improve our possession game because we just can’t seem to do 5 ot 6 passes in a row to keep the ball

Nowt all close season then the woodworms come out
Yes we were poor but give the lads credit they fought for every ball put their bodies on the line second half
Big Joe Linton man of the match
Bruno led by example second half – poor first half

A wins a win – ugly or not

Good low block in 2cnd half as we looked better organised after break and better game management than some of last season’s performances agains newly promoted sides

Surprised neither Tripps and MIggy were used but maybe transfers still a possibility ?

Southampton clearly need a striker rather than that poor ham actor from Chile 🙂

I know he managed to fool Pawson and VAR but Schar was stupid and it could cost him his place if no appeal and 3 match ban stands

Thats 3 point’s on board and signs of a side playiing for each other and the win

I don’t think much can be taken away about the performance today, other than it was an immense back to the walls fight for 3 points. 1st game of the season and 2/3 of it played with 10 against 12.

Adam Armstrong also showed why we were happy to let him leave

Never going to be a regular Premier league goal scorer in a million years

Feel like Southampton are going to dominate teams but ultimately a lack of quality up front will mean they get relegated similar to Burnley

Did he just say he needed crowd to win game? Thought he was elite?

    Positives –

    -We won
-We gave everything to the cause and never gave up
    -Joelinton looked amazing
    -Our bench actually looked strong

    Negatives –

-Even though we were down to 10 men, Southampton had far too much possession
    – Before the sending off, we didn’t look good
    – Gordon looked way off the pace
    – Schar misses next 3 games

No matter what though, the 3 points completely negate any negatives and we look forward to the next game!!

    Howay the lads.

Hall had a good game yes he made a few loose passes as he got tired but he made some great blocks including off the line

Still feel he eventually will end up a midfielder as he gets older his technical ability is quality

There was no forward movement or head butt from Schar yet Dias appears to have been shot.
The ref failed to immediately whistle for the foul or Shar and give Dias a first yellow card and then a second for his antics.

Last season VAR would have stepped in and the ref would have reversed the decision.
With the VAR changes this season VAR can chose to stay stum so as not to interrupt the flow of the game. Chaos ensues.

The problem is worse now and VAT not fit for purpose. The ref had a shocker from the first minute and needs to be banned from top flight games.
