Barnes, Kelly, And Longstaff Start Against Spurs At St. James’ Park

Newcastle are back at St. James’ Park today with a potentially revealing test against Tottenham. Eddie Howe has named the following eleven for the clash which has four changes from the midweek Carabao Cup win at Forest.

This is a strong team with Howe once again naming a front three of Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes, and Anthony Gordon. Getting the trio clicking in front of net is vital after not strengthening the attack in the summer transfer window.

This is the team Ange Postecoglu has named. It’s a rare start for former Juventus and Genoa defender Radu Dragusin in the place of the injured Micky van de Ven.

A win and all could be well again on Tyneside. The Magpies are undefeated and three points takes them into the top five ahead of the first international break of this season.

Those two old war horses Burn and Krafth have been majestic today, no frills, just good old honest to god defending, two great lads to have in our squad.

Well we got there in the end but it was a very hard watch. I can’t recall the last time I saw Toon giving the ball away so much….. Phew!!! 🙂

But at the end of the game we get the three points!

There’s only 2 positives from this one, we won and two, we seem to be getting results despite playing absolutely diabolical in our first 3 games.

    Onwards on upwards hopefully

The more home games we can win against the other top 8, the better. However we get it, winning is all that matters.

Ok, the second half we were under a lot of pressure but we held very well, we are a good defensive team.

Not pretty on the eyes when we do that but we limit their chances.

Not a pretty display but a rock solid one.

Some… solid performances, let me think of MOM. Burn, Tino, Kelly, Bruno, Joel… solid, but it was a battling one throughout.

    Big save Pope too.

There won’t be many teams who will beat Spurs this year, and they’ll be a lot of teams who lose to them badly.
We’re still not fully up to speed, but the good news is that defensively we’re well organised and fighting hard.

    Great win against good opposition.

People have some right flappy comments during a match haha

Not played at our best yet, but we have 7 points out of 9. That’s very very encouraging.

Gordon head turned? He was sprinting all over the pitch in that second half. Not exactly the work ethic of someone with their head turned.

Onwards and upwards and great win.

Great battling display, and a great 3 points taken.
The unity, resilience and togetherness shown by this group is second to none.
We’ll hit our stride at some point, until then, this team that tries will do for me.

Yes we’re not playing at our best yet, that’ll come.

But, it’s how you get the wins when you’re not playing well and we’re doing that.

2 wins, 1 draw and progress against Premier League opposition in the cup.

Not a bad start is it?

Lucky win that. Absolutely no ability to play out from the back though. Burn and krafts certainly can’t do it. Also think we play for the home run ball too often. You look at other teams and when it get to the full back they have 3 or 4 options to pass to. Ours usually has 2 options hoof it down the sideline or pass back. Feel like everyone is too spread out. It’s getting annoying the hoof up the sideline that is alway over hit and snuffed out by the defender easily. Hope tonali and willok get fit so we can see longstaff permanently on the bench. Also need botman and Schar back desperately.

    Tino and Joel wonderful

Gordon is strange . Looks distracted but kept running. Sometimes gave ball away and did little or nothing to win it back

Defensively we are pretty solid when backs to the wall

Joelinton man of the match 2 home games in a row now he’s really battling for the team at home

Well, we won and 7 points from 3 games and into the next round of League Cup.
As we all know, we have to improve if we want to gain a European place.
Tino had a good game. Our reserve centre backs are
durable and giving a good account of themselves. Again, more game time in the legs for everyone. Let’s hope there are no injuries over international break.

There will be 2 different interpretations of that game on here The deluded kiss arse Eddie howe fans who will still be singing up the epl we go
And then the intelligent knowledgeable fans who are saying how on earth was that 3 points
That was abysmal and was only won because of the inability of spurs to take advantage of their utter dominance
Burn longstaff and Murphy are still utter garbage
Bruno is one of the most overrated players in that team he hardly does anything apart from give fouls away joelinton is the better player by far
Gordon he has something but his form is alarming
Isak has to come in fir criticism he looks so light weight and constantly gives the ball away but he’s a top striker
    Kelly is no l back
    And pope shot stopping excellent
On all the other attributes for a keeper and there are a few he’s diabolical
It might be 7 out of nine how I’m amazed but sooner rather than later you know that team will slide down that league
Eddie howe couldn’t pick his nose

Krafth….I can’t give him enough credit. Playing slightly out of his preferred RB position, 3rd choice right sided CB, just keeps grafting and making the right plays. Perhaps his name should be Emile Graft! 😉

Sorry….will grab me coat and slip out the back.

How many good chances did they have? Can’t think of any real good ones.

And, our forwards were always lurking, looking for a break, given their high line which WILL give you chances.

Not saying this is how I want to see my team play but there are new realities.

We’re not going to be dominating games.

We’re not going to be getting many chances, but we will be getting some. Hope we take them, while absorbing the pressure.

I think this game will be very characteristic this season.

No bad team plays four matches against premier league opposition without losing.
We’ve not been out or best yet and we’re all disappointed with the transfer situation, but let’s not forget that the core of this team got us to Champions League qualification 15 months ago and 7th last season in an injury ravaged campaign.
Pope, Isak, Burn, Joelinton etc haven’t suddenly become rubbish players. Eddie, who has worked miracles since his arrival, hasn’t suddenly become a manager who doesn’y know what he’s doing.
Some very strange comments on here during the match.

Played or get out of jail card
Again started well then awful kept giving the ball away.
Howe very stubborn sometimes should go to 4 in midfield as we were getting overrun
    Didn’t understand his subs
Kelly, Longstaff pick of our midfield today and Barnes having good games
Bruno was poor – stop getting caught in possession you are not going to get a foul every time.
What was pope doing for the goal???
Gave my man of the match to Livramento sniffed out every danger and tried to get forward
Also Kelly, Burn and Kraft excellent
Isak poor but like all good centre forwards pops up with the winner.

Yes absolutely no doubt a good start to the season without playing well, nobody cant dispute that fact, but equally most people are not naive or blindsided, if we don`t improve our performances we simply won`t continue to dig out good results going forward.

    Magic

It’s great to dig out results but my nerves every match these days are shredded. The ability to dominate games and take it to the opposition, especially at home, seem to now be a thing of the past.

It doesn’t help that let’s be honest Pope’s distribution is dreadful and Burn and Krafth aren’t really ”footballing” CB’s. Plus speed is definitely an issue back there.

Bruno is getting caught in possession quite a lot playing deeper.

People deny that AG’s head hasn’t been turned but he’s definitely not been the same this season.

We’re still capable of thrilling moments though,
like Jo’s pass for the winner.

    @RH

I seen on a reddit forum in that we are now being compared to Ten Haag at Man Utd

The identity is gone and we seem to be just winning games on individual quality rather than outplaying teams

You know what? Maybe this is us evolving a little from high press to stop injuries and also make us more able to pickup points that we were dropping last season

Hell if we play like this and win the league Cup for example no one will be complaining!!!!
