Barnes, Kelly, And Longstaff Start Against Spurs At St. James’ Park

Newcastle are back at St. James’ Park today with a potentially revealing test against Tottenham. Eddie Howe has named the following eleven for the clash which has four changes from the midweek Carabao Cup win at Forest.

This is a strong team with Howe once again naming a front three of Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes, and Anthony Gordon. Getting the trio clicking in front of net is vital after not strengthening the attack in the summer transfer window.

This is the team Ange Postecoglu has named. It’s a rare start for former Juventus and Genoa defender Radu Dragusin in the place of the injured Micky van de Ven.

A win and all could be well again on Tyneside. The Magpies are undefeated and three points takes them into the top five ahead of the first international break of this season.

Howay The Lads!

Good evening fella, despite our very impressive start to the season in terms of results, there is still a lot more questions than answers for me mate, i mean where has that swashbuckling high energy high intensity press gone marra, i`m so perplexed and bewildered why it`s not happening anymore, i don`t have the answers, but could it possibly be all the all the indecision off the pith is having some effect with the players on the pitch mate?

    @Cyprus

The link up play with Liverpool front 3 is brilliant

We need to see more of that in our team we often look a bit more individual

Just back, not the most convincing of wins and definitely rode our luck, but a win is a win. It’s been a hugely unsettling summer for everyone involved at the club and with all the outside distractions gone now hopefully we’ll find our groove. Tonali gave them a lift, Wilson and Willock hopefully back after int break and only one game a week for awhile. Hopefully we’ll have a good season.

    Lee,
It is that, they’re a great counterattacking team. But, they also play a very high line. Like many top teams do.

Which, Magic, brings me to your point, what happened to that high press high intensity team?

Good question, I’ve been asking it myself.

Are the players not applying themselves as much, or running a little less to avoid those countless injuries? Is it a matter of personnel, people like miggy would run and run… Have we been found out? Are we trying to figure out a plan B? New faces needed?

Probably a little of all of the above.

Mainly, we’ve abandoned the high press, lots of bodies in the opposition half. We’ve been done a few times and it’s scared us so we’re being more controlled and patient. Result? We aren’t as dominant.

I’d take the gung ho style any day. Don’t think we’ll be in danger and it did give us fourth.

    Let’s go Eddie! 🙂

Might be something in that. Possibly with so many injuries last season Bunce has suggested less intensity and high press during matches. However, i think injuries were down to playing so many games last season.Once a week it would be nice to see them go for it a bit more.

i thought Longstaff had a good game today against a spurs team that were up for it and at times looked a yard faster,
great reception for Eddie and the boys today,
a wins a win no matter which way you look at it.

Rhetorical question, but why is the best team on the pitch one that doesn’t score?
Why can not a team that does a good job at defending be the better team?
Whilst we definitely rode our luck, we let them play their game and used their strength against them.

Do you lads think there has been a conscious decision taken by Eddie and the coaching team, to abandon the high press, because it was causing to many freak injuries?

I’m reading on here we are not the team we were, hmmmm, I am not sure how people think that, we are sitting on 7 points 3 games in, won the first match with 10 men, picked up a point away, and just beat spuds 2-1.

Our game is press high, well that’s hard with 10 men, we were really poor away from home last year, so a point was great, and then we play spuds, who everyone knows play all out attack so it’s hard to play our game vs them, I would love more goals, but I think Eddie has played a blinder so far.
I’m not worried we didn’t sign Guihe, I think it was to much and I think we need a CF more.

And Longstaff still getting slated, not sure why, try and find a goal scoring MF for under 50 mil, he is one of our own. Nuf said
