Barnes, Kelly, And Longstaff Start Against Spurs At St. James’ Park

Newcastle are back at St. James’ Park today with a potentially revealing test against Tottenham. Eddie Howe has named the following eleven for the clash which has four changes from the midweek Carabao Cup win at Forest.

This is a strong team with Howe once again naming a front three of Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes, and Anthony Gordon. Getting the trio clicking in front of net is vital after not strengthening the attack in the summer transfer window.

This is the team Ange Postecoglu has named. It’s a rare start for former Juventus and Genoa defender Radu Dragusin in the place of the injured Micky van de Ven.

A win and all could be well again on Tyneside. The Magpies are undefeated and three points takes them into the top five ahead of the first international break of this season.

Howay The Lads!

Got 3 points in the style of Bruce.

    Was utter luck.

Concerned about Eddie..: seems like he’s out of his depth all of a sudden.

I think you answered your own question. When they say its not the same team, they mean style not the results.

    Magic

I’m sure Bunce had had some influence. He’s a leading light in his field, ie injury prevention and I think this is largely what he was brought in for.
I’d love to see a tiki taca coach come in to help too as we just can’t seem to keep the ball.

It’s fair enough to criticise the decision to sell Minteh as something from the Ashley era. But then it should also be acknowledged that in the Ashley era we would have bever bought him in the first place nor made £20m profit on him.
We bought Toney as a prospect in the Ashley era and club had no idea how to develop him, and ended up selling him for peanuts.

Cheers for that mate, and yes Brunce could possibly have had a big input in the change of style to limit the amount of injuries.

Just got back from the match. Here’s my take.

I hope that those who have called a number of our squad as being “dogsh1t” or something similar of late, think again.

All of today’s backline including the subs, have received some stick on here. They may be limited but played like Trojan’s today though recieved scant protection from the midfield today. I’m not a huge fan though thought that Longstaff was the pick of the bunch from midfield The Brazilians certainly weren’t playing samba football.

Also, I don’t think Eddie’s substitutions were totally to the benefit of team output. Bruno should have been hooked for Tonali, but it might hav been politically unacceptable to take off the recently appointed captain. Likewise, I couldn’t figure why Barned had to come off, though t.b.f. Murphy who also has his detractors too – did exactly the right thing for the winning goal in term sof his movement and pass. At the end of the day Eddie maybe has to sometimes play a political game, when it comes to selection.

Speaking of political games, I fear that today’s visit from PIF may be precisely that; though if so, what the agenda is, it isn’t totally clear.

    That’s how I saw it
Longstaff was our best in midfield by a mile
We have got to get Willock for or someone to get up the pitch to help Isak
    Defence outstanding midfield poor overran
Maybe Eddie has to change and play 4 in midfield

    Ground out a great result
Our style at our best was high press but that’s gone. No idea why. Injuries? Yeah ok if you press high every game but we are not pressing at all
Waiting for the team to develop a style but winning ugly is fine by me for now

Brilliant to be in the stands at St. Jame’s Park today.

This win against spuds make it 3 matches in person and 3 wins for the Toon.

For Isak’s goal. Class finish, good run and pass by Murphy but joelinton made that chance possible – won the ball, turned and shielded off the pressure and made the pass to put murphy in. Big joe was not at his best today, loose with the ball, bit great in the moment for the ball.

Did we play more like a Rafa side than our expected was under Howe? Yes we did

Ange ball doesn’t deal well with teams sitting in and letting them have possession. They did create some chances and Pope had to make some good saves, but for the most part he had the goals otherwise covered or the defense did, keeping most all their attempts outside the area.

Just a great atmosphere. Crowd did get quiet a couple times when we were struggling to hold the ball, and rightly let bruno, murphy and big joe know when they made nad plays, but never reallt got down on the Lads.

Not a blueprint for the whole of the season but a good win for today.

    Howay the Lads!!!

We give the ball away a lot is because we are not good enough in our pass and move game
We need a dutch or spanish coach to teach these players the technical movements and passing ability. Everytime I see our passes its very slow. We need to learn to zip passes fast and accurate. We need more coaching staff.

Spurs should have had a player sent off for a studs up bad stamp on Isak. Last season VAR would have decided that. At Chelsea Hughes from Palace should have been off for a clear second yellow but ref likes him and let him off so that’s ok. In our game the yellows flowed freely for the same fouls.

The refs and VAR remain so inconsistent.

Barnes is beginning to show his real potential. Sky didn’t even show his great strike in the first half which just missed which seems odd. Let’s see if MOTD can manage to show it.

    Magic,

Why don’t we play like we used to? I think we’re playing more “safe” these days, like I said. We’re not playing that high a line, with people like trip playing the outright winger role, even Burn bombing forward.

That kind of play created, literally, dozens of chances. It was beautiful to watch.

But, sometimes we got caught out, looking foolish chasing back with our lumbering CBs Vs agile opposition wingers.

Me, I’d take that any day, but today we’re playing more “pragmatic”* football.

Anyway, once we hit the magic 40 points**, release the handbrake!

    * Even though it’s a greek word, I don’t like it. It’s too… pragmatic for my taste, entertain us nufc!

** Many years of looking for that magic number has affected me, I still look for that threshold.

Yes, Barnes, MOM, why not? Last year, I was critical, I said I expected more, he’d better deliver and all that tosh. Well, he’s delivering just fine, hats off.

I critiqued Pope during the game, not his overall play which was excellent, just the goal. Thinking about it now, ok, he should’ve pushed the ball further out than onto the winger, but it was an awkward ball coming in. So, Pope my man, all good! You done well today, as per usual.

Very pleased to see Eddie start with Isak, Barnes and Gordon. Great front three, and Wilson, Murphy, Almiron and Osulu good depth, balance and quality in cover.

Can’t leave Barnes out. Just too good.

Also great to see Tonali back. Our midfield is similar to our attack. Excellent first choices, and good cover.

    We’re also defending well.

It’s heartening, but Eddie needs to find a way to build momentum and form, after the disappointment of that poor window.

    Winning of course helps tremendously.

Just got back after the match.
Jesus we were lucky. Spurs should have had at least 4. I’ve never seen us that poor at home for a good few years, but we nicked a win. Quite unbelievable. Hard to pick out anyone who played well. Perhaps Tino who made some great interceptions second half. We gave the ball away all match and lost most 50/50’s. Spurs were so much sharper and moved the ball at speed. A lot of our players still looked undercooked. 7 points from those 3 games is a bonus as it could easily have been zip. Have we used up a seasons luck in 4 matches? Possibly. I think the whole squad needs a reset and then start again. Our form will have to improve if we want to be anywhere near the top half.

The lack of transfers this summer has nothing to do with PSR. PSR was the cause of Minteh and Anderson leaving. Different financial period. We wouldn’t have tried for Guehi if PSR was a problem this season.

Another thing I’ve noticed which we need to try figure a way around is every game in the league the opposition have put their fullbacks into midfield and strangled us

I think Willock being able to run with the ball would make a difference there was a few times Bruno tried to do it but he just doesn’t have the pace to get away from anyone in the middle

Still think in some games there’s room for someone to play as a 10 to make it easier to progress through the middle be it Almiron in his natural position or someone else

We don’t seem to have the energy ( or is it by instruction) to press high for more than 20 minutes

The game followed the pattern of the previous 3 – started well, went of the boil then started to play again after subs

Of course there are 2 teams out there and Spurs gradually worked ther way into game but could have been 2 down then scored 2 themselves

I noticed a few claims by some on here of no plan B by Eddie which is of course not true ( although I do want earlier subs at times) but reckon you might find a few Spurs fans that would level that accusation at Postecoglou with his high line giving them lots of possession poor finishing but vulnerable to quick breaks

Maybe if Eddie had had Botman and Schar availalble our high press could be sustained for longer and better as they are perhaps quicker also Spurs could have been caught more on break as both can pass out well and would have got our front 3 more in behind that high line

Burn and Krafth were steady but do limit how we can play

Eddie seemed to have settled for a low block and hit on the break as Spurs began to dominate in 2cnd half

Tonali made us more dynamic when he came on but not as effective as against Forest when his movement and quick passing caught the eye more – can’t wait for his regular involvement

By contrast Bruno has to stop dwelling on ball around our area looking for free kicks – great when running down clock and you win one but not so if ref doesn’t give it and we lose possession. He’s not yet at his best though

Tino justified Eddie switching back to him for RB although I do miss Tripps as captain

So overalll we rode our luck but Spurs were wasteful (Solanke might have helped) and it’s not possession, shots on target that win matches but more goals scored

Surely when we get Schar Wilson and Willock back soon after break , Tonali up to speed then Botman, Lascelles and MIley to follow later in year we can look for better performances and hopefully still get the points!

Our high press is not as effective when Almiron is not playing. He chases many a lost cause and runs miles. Sadly he is getting older and losing a bit of speed
