Barnes, Trippier, and Willock Start At Fulham

Newcastle are in the top four as they head south to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage today. The Magpies have grafted for their impressive points haul but yet to put in an overly convincing display.

Hopefully, that changes with this side Eddie Howe has named. It features four changes from the 2-1 win against Wolves last weekend with Kieran Trippier, Lloyd Kelly, Joe Willock, and Harvey Barnes getting the nods.

This is the team Marco Silva has selected for the hosts.

Newcastle have another golden opportunity to pick up points away. Their luck could run out if the levels don’t rise against The Cottagers. The hope is these changes from Howe spark a convincing victory at Craven Cottage.

“It’s typical of Darren Eales’ selflessness that, even after being diagnosed with a chronic form of blood cancer, he insists on staying on and helping Newcastle United out with the transition following yesterday’ announcement. Eales clearly loves the club and their incredible support, and there will be emotional scenes and songs at St James’ Park at lunchtime today. Eales is a popular figure.

There have been tensions this season, inevitably as Eales’ role is to ensure Newcastle’s compliance with PSR. But what everyone knows is that even in his two and a bit years on Tyneside, he cares passionately about the fans, the squad, the staff and the Club. That’s Eales’ character. He was the same at Atlanta United. He loved mixing with fans before games. I went with him once on one of his Atlanta walkarounds and he knew many fans by name. They all knew and liked him. He was open with them and listened to them.

He’s the same with Newcastle fans, talking to them on trips or before matches at St James’ Park. Not all club executives can do that. Not all fans would welcome it. Eales joins in their songs, too. It’s not for show. He enjoys company, a chat, a laugh. We went for dinner in Atlanta once and it was a mix of serious football debate (him and others not me) and merriment (definitely him). Even a brief lunch at St Pancras station was memorable. Eales is intelligent and great fun.

He has a mischievous streak. When Newcastle were drawn against AC Milan in last season’s Champions League, Eales reflected on Sky on the 10,000 fans who’d headed to  San Siro in 2003, adding wryly “and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Mackem in Milan either”. That was the Newcastle fans’ chant and obviously went down very well on the Gallowgate. Sunderland supporters should know that Eales would never do something like that deliberately disrespectfully. Darren just reacts like a fan at times. The 52-year-old goes all in for the club he’s working for.

And St James’ Park has been more than a place of work for Eales. It’s why it will be so hard for him eventually to walk away. But of course he has to for his treatment and to spend time with his wife and twin sons. He’s incredibly proud to be involved with Newcastle, is staying in the area and told the club’s in-house media about his boys now being Toon fans for life.

Newcastle will miss Eales for his personality, energy and also his ability as a chief executive. His work has involved meeting PSR requirements, which meant the difficult decision to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to generate £65m profit. “The need to trade” Eales calls it. Newcastle failed to land Marc Guehi but importantly held on to Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. That was vital. And that followed a slew of headlines about Newcastle having to sell one of their star names to their rivals. But they didn’t, and part of that is down to Eales.

Whatever local frustration of not being able to tap more into their owners’ vast wealth, Newcastle are trying to achieve “sustainable success” in Eales’ words. They’re building. Eales points out the club have doubled revenue in under three seasons, and the Adidas deal helps hugely.

Eales is a good negotiator, drawing on his Cambridge law degree and experience working at Spurs and Atlanta. The fact that people instinctively warm to Eales must also help discussions around the table. When Eales bows out, having selflessly assisted the transition, Newcastle will be losing an exceptional chief executive and fans’ friend. The Premier League will be losing a respected operator and one of the brighter minds around the table. Football needs more leaders like Darren Eales. But all that matters is this hugely likeable man, who has done so much good work on both sides of the Atlantic, focuses on his family and his health. #NUFC”

From Henry Winter he hits the nail on the head .
Best of Luck to Darren with this fight .

Man city had injury issues last season when playing us and still played us off the park. Man city 2nd and 3rd team can outplay us, thats how bad our play has been this season.

We need a technical coach really bad either spanish or dutch

    IrishRob,
Unfortunately for Eales there was something about his appearance that people took a dislike to, I can only assume that’s the reason people did, his work here has been stellar. It was Ashworth leaving (imo) that started the series of events that have created a bit of a shitty year.

    I agree 100%.

I don’t think the owners or anyone at the club expected that and it has a bad knock on effect that we still see today.

Good article from Henry Winter on Eales. He said in his nufc clip that he was staying in the area and that his sons are Newcastle fans. Good in him.
Not what the owners would have been expecting, losing the CEO and DOF within 9 months.
Hope all goes well with his treatment.

If Isak is playing through the pain barrier with a broken toe we are far better off without him. I’m looking at it ad a positive give Osula a chance. He’s looked eager and very fast. Speed has always been our no.1 weapon the way we play.

433 again. Not sure abput this line up. Gordon obviously playing striker.

I would have gone 442, played Willock, dropped Murphy, and played Barnes and Gordon up top end

Osula has to start. What’s the point of spending 10 mil then?

Someone remind me why we hate Hope?

Anyway, his last two were pretty good presentations, summarizing a lot of stuff fans are talking about. And he’s nearer to Eddie et al than most of us.

On another issue, why did Shearer think that wasn’t a pen, anyone hear him? There were no complaints from the keeper and it seemed straightforward.
