Barnes, Gordon, and Hall Start At Everton

Newcastle take on the Toffees at Goodison Park this afternoon looking to keep the momentum going. The lads are coming off a terrific point against Manchester City while advancing to the Carabao Cup Round of 16 where they’ll take on Chelsea at St. James’ Park.

Everton too have a bit of momentum after getting their first win of the season against Crystal Palace last weekend. This will be a difficult test for the Magpies, who still struggle away from home.

This is the side Eddie Howe has named for today’s clash. It is the same team that drew 1-1 against Man City last weekend.

Here is the team Sean Dyche has selected for the hosts.

Taking all the spoils at Goodison would mean a comfortable international break on Tyneside. It will not be easy as the Toffees have played well and but for some late match collapses, would be in a much better place in the table.

Hopefully, this team can get the job done and Anthony Gordon can again play well up front in place of the injured Alexander Isak.

Howay The Lads!

    Raj
    Yes we can complain.
There were 3 points to be had there and Gordon should have been nowhere near that penalty.
Pickford was always going to dive. Schar down the middle should have sorted that.

Everton are bottom 6 without best defender.
They will stay up because they often win those sort of games at home.
No way are we top 4.
    6 to 8 for me

Listened on radio. I thought we were the better team but didn’t create enough clear cut chances. Pen miss and clearances off their line were crucial. Gordon pen against Everton, he was bound to miss, but he had to take it after last week. We missed our 2 strikers. I posted a few days ago we’re just not scoring enough. We so nearly created loads of chances but didn’t. Wilson being the crock he is is really costing us, but we’ve had to put up with that every season he’s been with us. And Isaac is not robust either. We have 2 excellent CF who are just not reliable enough. I’d rather have Watkins and Duran I’m afraid.

We’ll never play a poorer Everton side. A weak squad with several of their quality players missing, a 39 yr old at LB and a midfielder at RB and second choice CB.
Gordon was out on his legs. Can’t fault the effort but he isn’t a CF and it seemed odd to me that Osula didn’t come on at 70mins or so as I think we would have occupied the Everton Cbs more and been a greater aerial threat to them.

Newcastle United played well but failed to find that final key to unlocking Everton’s defence. In my opinion we deserved all three points but sadly came home with only one!

I am still pleased we are avoiding defeats whilst we’re not at our fluent best. The big tests are to come in 2 weeks. Brighton, Chelsea and Arsenal. We need to up our game for them but we need both Isaac and Wilson fit and available.

Good man Eddie. You’ve showing yet again your not the right man to take us forward to the next level. How many years is it your here and you struggle against low block teams. No change of formation when we run out of ideas. Lik for lik subs game after game. Eddie your a one trick pony and that’s your press. When it doesn’t work your clueless. And you look a bang average manager with very few ideas. As I said at half time Jason tindal has to b removed as the set piece coach. If anyone was in a job and wasn’t getting end results they’d b removed. It’s time the the top brass at the club appoint a world class set piece coach and not Eddie’s best mate amateur stuff. Looks lik it’ll b another season of win a couple draw a couple then lose. Not top 4 material. But the happy clappers can’t blame the injuries now which is a good thing. They’ll maybe start to see that Eddie’s not the man to take us to the next level. Maybe not there heads will most likely still b in the sand lol. And told you before the game Gordon and the team would struggle against this low block Everton team with him starting up top. But hi in Eddie we trust lol.

We pretty much controlled that game from start to finish, but we huffed and puffed without creating many clear cut chances, and had no cutting edge without a recognised striker, still we come away with a point, i`ve seen teams lose matches like that in the past after dominating a match, disappointing though that pickford had very few saves to make, that is concerning.

Need a reliable back up for Isak in Jan like we should have done in summer rather than the pointless pursuit of Guehi. Probably get another keeper or defender.

Ok Isak and Wilson out doesn’t help but we need to be way more aggressive and less pretty.

And Pickford didn’t really save the pen. The ball was kicked straight at him and bounced off – he hadn’t a clue where the ball was.

AG cannot head a ball – he does not like putting his head “in” for the ball – and never has.

Top 3 are now 5 points clear of the pack and have way better goal scoring capacity

We need some new blood in January and pissing away £50million plus on Guehi seems a bad idea.

I’d say our season is now officially up and running, after a slightly concerning start in terms of form. It often takes half a dozen games to get into stride, and appears to have happened to us.

Clearly though we need better availability from Isak and Wilson, Botman back, and one good addition in January, to give ourselves a decent shot at fourth, which is certainly within our capabilities.

I’m all for staying at St James’s, with a full overhaul of the ground and at around 65000. Would also be keen on a brand new ground, if it were still St James’s, half on its current site and also Leazes Park, if possible. I do think you want full houses for every match. That fear factor for visiting sides. I hadn’t really thought much about it, but I now recognise you really don’t want empty seats, you want the ground rocking. You do whatever you can to make it to a fortress.

I’m also becoming more convinced that Barnes is better as a sub. I never feel he has a good a game as he’s capable of when he starts. If your bringing on Miggy and Longstaff to win it just ain’t going to happen.

Another annoying thing in our play is when a player i.e gordon takes ball wide, hall goes long way to over lap him. I mean why cant he underlap instead and give a forward pass option or a one two pass option. Why do they always have to go the over lap way when theres nothing they can do from that position. This team is fookin stale and needs a fresh direction and fresh ideas. New foreign coaches in backroom team would help for starters

The signing of the Greek keeper is worse though. I understand why, but that appears a terrible waste of 25 million precious quid in a PSR world.

Osula at 10 might turn out very well for us though, but you do get the feeling that the 35 million total could certainly have been better spent on a player to really help our immediate cause and that maybe the club, might have managed this aspect of our recruitment better. We’ll see of course. Both may contribute, more than currently would seem likely. Still, I don’t think many would argue either player is what we really needed.

Can’t believe we didn’t win that game.

Ref was poor and let Everton foul us out of the game.

Despite his miss I thought AG had a good game, always busy and trying.

Twas finishing that really let us down though.

    Plenty of chances fluffed!

We can’t afford to be so wasteful in our next few games.

They would score more than one goal as well.
We did not have a shot on target.
We dominated but final third was worse than piss poor

We might have scored a couple with Isak playing. He flourishes in games where we dominate and our midfield can slip balls though the middle for him to run onto.
Not so good with back to goal.
Our forwards are shot shy. Some have weak shots and explains the reluctance to shoot

Gordon’s run up for the pen was so obvious. He started way to wide, failed to be able to change direction as Pickford had already dived and he tapped it. Schar down the middle would have sorted 3 points.

Why do we do things like the Newcastle of old ? We need to break some moulds.

Yeah Jail, I understand it came down to a needs must situation because of PSR, but I just wonder if we might have better avoided it. Maybe not though. Maybe we just had to take calculated risks in signing Tonali, Barnes, Livra and Hall, in the hopes of doing better in the CL and League, and it didn’t work out as well as we needed.
