Newcastle are back in action after the October international break. The competition is stiff as Newcastle enter what could be a revealing stretch of matches. Today Brighton come to St. James Park in a battle between the sixth and seventh placed clubs.
This is who Eddie Howe has named for today’s match. It has two changes from the draw at Everton with Alexander Isak back leading the line.

Here is the side Fabian Hurzeler has selected for the Seagulls with Yankuba Minteh not in the squad.

This is a massive fixture despite it still being early. Newcastle have played better of late but to Howe’s admission, have not yet reached top gear. That may need to happen today to get all three points against a very talented Brighton side.

Comment #81Why is burn playing in an advanced role? You’d think if anything it’d be Schar. Cost them on that one break out but that was too easy regardless of who was back. It was 2 forwards vs 3 D. Shouldn’t happen

Comment #82This has been so dominant yet after just one, not just a chance, their first foray into our box and we’re losing.
That’s football.
Thing is, we shouldn’t feel sorry for ourselves. If we continue playing like that we’ll score.

Comment #83Plenty of time for us to pull this back. We’ve been playing really well.
The ref’s not helping us at all. I honestly thought that the call for a handball was actually a penalty because the player was on the floor and lept towards the ball on the floor, touching it with his arm. He didn’t seem to fall on the ball, rather lept onto it when already on the floor. I’ll need to look at it again.
Sucker punch goal that can happen when everyone’s focused on going forward.

Comment #85We were very good until their goal, need to come out at the restart and continue the intensity because Brighton couldn’t handle us.
Danny bloody Welbeck!
Still think we have more than enough quality to win this.

Comment #86Apart from having just come back from injury, I think isak is lacking a bit of confidence. He would’ve buried that chance last season. If only Murphy hadn’t got in the way of his early chance

Comment #87Frustrating as we’ve dominated.
Keep going and we have good options on the bench to change things early into the second half if needs be.

Comment #88Our best eleven, playing with improvement but still lacking fluency, tempo and sharpness. If Brighton do nothing to change we should be able to pull back a win with 5% improvement, but I predict another 1-1 draw.

Comment #89A rusty game back after injury and people are wanting ISAK sold ffs.
Must remember not to read the blog during a match!

Comment #90What has happened to Isak? Surely he takes that round or chips the keeper. That’s a game losing miss.
Lots of possession but somehow very predictable and Tino and Hall very weak for the brighton goal

Comment #91Tonali poor enough. Why does Eddie persist with Murphy? Loyalty will cost him his job and he can have zero complaints if so.

Comment #94Was hoping/expecting Brighton to come on to us more and give us the openings we crave, but Hurzeler has obviously twigged that we struggle badly against teams who defend deep. Fair play to the kid, his game plan has worked perfectly.
Still think we win this one, but it’s not gonna be easy and I don’t see Brighton changing anything to let us play the way we want

Isak wants nearly 200k a week, the keeper has sold himself, just had to go round him.

Comment #98Stone cold penalty he clearly was trying to keep the ball in between his shoulders so it would keep rolling on for whoever it was to run on to. Ref has been terrible this one always is. But it’s not why we’re losing. One lapse in concentration is why. That was way too easy

Comment #99More than capable of winning this. Just need a bit of luck.
Never judge a player or a manager after one season. At least 2
Normally players are great when they are playing for a pay rise. Isak seems to think he will get one by playing shit. It can only happen in footy

Comment #100RH. Isak deserves 200k a week. He was the second best striker in the PL last season after Haaland on stats. One bad game back from injury doesn’t mean he should be sold.

Comment #104Rotonda obviously he should have rounded the keeper and I was shouting at the screen myself but that’s not how football works. Haaland has had clangers, Messi and Ronaldo, Pele etc etc.
Isak is one of the most valuable strikers on the planet and we’re unbelievably lucky to have him. If Real Madrid tried to sign him it wouldn’t raise eyebrows
