Gordon, Hall, and Isak Start Against Brighton

Newcastle are back in action after the October international break. The competition is stiff as Newcastle enter what could be a revealing stretch of matches. Today Brighton come to St. James Park in a battle between the sixth and seventh placed clubs.

This is who Eddie Howe has named for today’s match. It has two changes from the draw at Everton with Alexander Isak back leading the line.

Here is the side Fabian Hurzeler has selected for the Seagulls with Yankuba Minteh not in the squad.

This is a massive fixture despite it still being early. Newcastle have played better of late but to Howe’s admission, have not yet reached top gear. That may need to happen today to get all three points against a very talented Brighton side.

It’s no coincidence that I’m able to call that we are not going to score hours before the match is even over.

There is something not right with us and hasn’t been for a long long time .

Totally against the run of play.

    Nothing to be ashamed of.

Like the commentator just said, “Newcastle took frustration to a new level.”

I expected Brighton to dominate, before the game, but no, it was the exact opposite.

Second commentator: “a smash and grab.”

    It happens.

No worries, on another day it would have been a clear win.

We have gone from a side consistently winning to one totally inconsistent.
Last year it was blamed on injuries and fatigue.
    This season it’s no transfers.
Even with no transfers we should be so much better.
Eddie needs to up his game.
It’s a bumpy ride. It’s not what it said on tin 3 years ago

I’d be happy enough if Howe goes tbh.

First time I’m saying it but we’re not getting back to how we played two years ago and our team Is far far better now.

This form we’re all waiting to come just isn’t coming. We look like a complete different team from 2 years ago and we have looked this way for a long long time. It’s been a year of this ffs.

I just don’t think Howe has the answers anymore.

If he stays I don’t care or if he’s fired before Christmas I won’t care either.

I’ll be grateful for all he’s done but I’m starting to come to the conclusion he’s not taking us any further, we’re regressing.

    Poet,
I ain’t a happy clapper, but I’m clapping this effort.

    21 shots to 10, 519 passes to 354. 60% possession.

And we had two one on ones, plus many other chances.

    The one negative?

The scoreline. I’m happy if we give this kind of performance every week, which we don’t. If we do, goals will come, and wins.

Plenty of endavour and pressing ,but if you dont score with that amount of pressure we were always gonna be vunerable to the sucker punch, The intensity is back the ability to score has dried up and thats a worry. I Think Tonali will. e hugh fr us this season ,his doggedness and tenacity, brillaint ,Like your self munster, I too have an opinion about our players on the day.hopefully the goal scoring drought ends soon as todays game had Bad familliar feeling to it .

Nothing wrong with overall performance, dominated a very good Brighton team.

Just something isn’t right in the final third at the moment. Not creating clear chances and when we are, we look very unsure and not confident.

Hall was probably our best player on the pitch.

Overall a good performance but super frustrating in front of goal.

    Just a reminder to some.
We DIDN’T pay £80m, £75m, £70m or whatever for a defender. It didn’t happen. Complain about it when it has happened.

Even with all of the half chances created we never really looked like scoring their keeper didn’t really have difficult saves to make

We lack a creative midfielder/ no 10 and a right winger every week it’s painfully obvious and until we get those players in it’s going to be frustrating

When teams sit back and allow you to dominate possession you need full backs that offer an attacking threat. That is something we are desperately lacking

Just a reminder for some. Not one dingle person has complained about spending £80m, £75m, or £70m for a defender.

We have said IF we spend that much on a defender then the club needs their head checked.

Which is a valid points it not?

I don’t know if it’s believing the hype, or the contract talks and endless speculation over getting moves away but currently our 3 best players Gordon, Isak and even Bruno are playing like they’re running through treacle.

2 great, great chances missed, 1 each to AG and AI.

We huff and puff and have a lot of possession but we do seem woefully short on a plan B and new ideas. Crying out for a number 10 to put his foot on the ball and a number 6 to shore up and prevent the type of goal we conceded again today.

Plus point, Joel was great, winning the ball and with no little skill either.
Not always BDB’s biggest fan but boy did he play well today.

Just feels like we just haven’t clicked (Man city game apart) at all this season yet and seem to be almost regressing from that amazing team of 18 months ago.

Hi Adam lad, football is as changeable and unpredictable as the weather, there will be games this season where we don`t play half as well as today, and we will win mate, we certainly played well today, it is just so frustrating to put in a performance like that and have nothing to show for it Adam, but sure that`s football mate.

Very true. Already happened this season, where we have played worse yet picked up the win. The intensity seems to be coming back, but we haven’t found that killer touch in front of goal yet. Not sure what’s wrong, but hoping it can be sorted and sorted quick.

That was a hard watch. Teams block the area in front of the box and we can’t work out what to do or we do it too slowly. We need more impulsive play, just too deliberate. Gordon needs to stay wide and seemed to be doing an unfit Isak’s job. If we want top 4 we can barely afford to loose another two games all season.

Point taken. It’s just that in EH’s first 2 seasons I was confident of winning most games and playing great football. Couldn’t wait for the next game.
However, something’s not been right for some time now, especially away from home.

I’m not calling for howies head but honest he seems to be sticking with certain players Murphy, hall will be good in time but he loses the ball a lot with his passing, iask at this time does he deserve a pay rise nooo tino got sloppy in the backend of the game and what’s happened with Kelly, burno trying to hard with all these revese flicks wilock does not look the same player as before his injuries, and we have Chelsea next 2 games howie has got world class players who can not hit the target, my be it’s just but to me it all started when Amanda left and Mitchell came in seem him in the stands today he does not look bothered ether.

Thing is, we didn’t strengthen for two straight windows, completely nuts to do in the PL.

We needed a CF, a 10, a winger, not to mention the CB (which we don’t really need). We got nothing.

That’s why I can’t blame Eddie. He’s playing a brand of football we haven’t seen for many many years and some of these players have been relegated and are Rafa’s and Bruce’s.

    However, has the project stalled?

Absolutely. I thought we’d be getting minimum 2 top players per window. Hasn’t happened. Isn’t happening.

Enjoy the ride. Way more fun than 29%, 0 attempts anti-football.
