Gordon, Kelly, And Longstaff Start Against Chelsea For Place In Quarterfinal

Newcastle are hoping to end a winless streak with a continuation of their Carabao Cup run this evening. Redemption is on hand after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea just a few days ago.

This is the side Eddie Howe has named against the Blues at St. James’ Park for a ticket to the quarterfinals. It has five changes from the weekend. The good news is Anthony Gordon is back in the team after missing out with injury.

Here is the team team Enzo Moresca has selected for the visitors.

Belief may be starting to wane on this campaign with Newcastle mired in the bottom half of the table. However, advancing in this competition is a very real prospect. A win today could jumpstart better days ahead.

Not exactly a weak Chelsea side they are putting to the sword.

That Chelsea first 11 cost/wages must be 3/4x that of the Newcastle starting 11.

    Tonali looks the part.

It’s sharper and quicker, nobody in midfield is holding onto the ball for too long.

Tonali running midfield, much more pace and vision and passing ability than Bruno.

We need another goal before half time because the Chelsea manager will 100% fix this problem they have with playing out from the back second half

Disasi has been great for us – didn’t even realise we’d signed him !!

Joking aside, we should never sign a player who is a few letters short of being called “Disiaster” when he’s off form

One thought I’ve had from the last few games is that Pope seems quite nervous. He’s looked a bit wobbly on corners and pushing/punching crosses that I would expect him to catch.
I hope he’s not feeling his shoulder that was damaged last season

    Great half

Midfield is what I’ve been saying we need to do for the last couple weeks now. Quicker passes. Much more movement with Willocks running and Longstaff is sweeping up well.

agreed on Hall, initially Livramento seemed to be the far better player..But Hall seems to have the instincts Livramento doesn’t

his defending has improved & he’s always looked looked good on the ball

Joelinton and Tonali have been our best players.

Gordon is wasted on the right nut Joelinton looks good on the left wing tonight.

Man City losing 2-0 at Spurs is a bit of a shocker considering their reserve team is still top class

As good as Newcastle have been…this is not the same Chelsea side from the weekend.

their defense seemed to have possession for the majority of half & every pass they made seemed to be perilous. This Maresca fella might not be as impressive as the footballing journos would have us believe. Should have changed the formation early in the half.

I’d be shocked if there aren’t changes immediately after the half from Chelsea

I hope we can get a 3rd goal to more or less but the game to bed, which would enable Eddie to make some changes to rest a few players for the Arsenal game on Saturday folks.

I bet Isak was saying to Joelinton “when you win the ball, play it straight to me”.

Got to admire the selfishness of him.
How much longer will play tonight?

I was getting a little bit concerned for the last 10 minutes of that half. Sitting back deep against this Chelsea team and trying to absorb them is not going to work, We’re 2-0 up because we’ve pressed them hard in their half
