Newcastle are hoping to end a winless streak with a continuation of their Carabao Cup run this evening. Redemption is on hand after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea just a few days ago.
This is the side Eddie Howe has named against the Blues at St. James’ Park for a ticket to the quarterfinals. It has five changes from the weekend. The good news is Anthony Gordon is back in the team after missing out with injury.

Belief may be starting to wane on this campaign with Newcastle mired in the bottom half of the table. However, advancing in this competition is a very real prospect. A win today could jumpstart better days ahead.

Comment #121Every time I have watched Chelsea this season, they struggle (that’s putting it lightly) to break teams down that sit deep.
Chelsea’s need teams to take the game to them as their best chance of scoring.
Sitting deeper in the 2nd half was good game management.

Comment #129Not bad but God dammit I can’t stand when we sit back on a lead. But we got it over the line a good result all in all.

Comment #131Kelly MoM for me by a mile.
Did his job at LCB brilliantly with some excellent blocks. Then was shifted to LB when Maduake came on and started to give Hall trouble. Hardly heard from Maduake again once Kelly was at LB.

Comment #132hard to call a MOTM…I’ll give it Krafth…he’s always been newcastle best defender

Comment #133Burn has to sit it out for a bit now Kelly showing why we signed him he needs a proper run in the team his pace gave us a platform to build from
We moved him to left back and Chelsea got in with a ball over Burn straight away

Comment #134Pity we won’t see Kelly at CB on Saturday. Burn will be back.
Remember kelly saved a CERTAIN two goals with vital blocks, wasn’t slow and was strong on the ball.
After that performance I’d have him in over either burn or Schar without question.

Comment #137Great result for the lads, but not a match that will not live long in the memory, we`re still not firing on all cylinders, but getting through was all that matters, job done, up the Toon.

Comment #139Agreed on Kelly…When Burn came on…there was immediate danger from Chelsea splitting the defense between burn and Schar. You just cant pair Schar with Burn
Kelly or Krafth at cb has to be the answer

Comment #140Kelly, Krafth, Tonali, Longy, Joelinton all played well. Willock much improved. Hard to pick a single MotM.

Comment #141For me I think it was a Joelinton he was a beast again everything went through him never lost the ball. Tonali close and Kelly close.
Those 3 for me are the stand out performers, but no one was bad.

Comment #142Some great teams left in the competition, a home draw to Crystal Palace or Man Utd is as good as we could hope for folks.

Comment #143I’d trust Kelly to take care of Saka on Saturday more than I would Hall. Not saying either would be successfully but Kelly has the more defensive mindset.
Two different players for different situations.
Of course, the better option might be, as some have hinted, Kelly at LCB and keep Hall at LB. That would seem like a good balance but also with more of an attacking threat.

I hope we can get a 3rd goal to more or less but the game to bed, which would enable Eddie to make some changes to rest a few players for the Arsenal game on Saturday folks.
We almost did a few times my friend but never mind we’re in the next round! A home tie would be good – against Crystal Palace eh?

Comment #149Well done to the lads tonight, a fully deserved win with so many good performances.
They played as a team so i won`t give a MOTM.
We are bound to get one of the fancied teams in the next round away, the scouse reds or Arsenal , but how about Southampton or Brentford at home.
Cheers.

Comment #151A total change of subject…..imagine in the 90’s if the football world had the same understanding and support for mental health as we have today….Gazza would have been twice the player he was….frightening

It’s because he was playing on the wing that’s why he was so good
There is space and it’s him against a fullback which he just dominates
In midfield it’s too busy with too many quick players he’s just not got that skillset
A lot to consider for Eddie who made some brave changes and we looked so much better overall with them
Don’t want to see that midfield 3 or Burn at centre back at the weekend again

Comment #155Midfield a lot better moved the ball a lot quicker crisp first time passes
And Big Joe playing wide left our star man.
Lost our way when he went right back but as soon as he went back out wide late second half we looked a better team again
Got to give Osula 30 mins Saturday to try a give the Arsenal defence grief.
A lot of good performances but desperate for a mobile centre half

So, here’s who is going into the hat for the EFL Cup quarter-finals draw:
Tottenham
Liverpool
Manchester U
Newcastle United
Arsenal
Southampton
Brentford
Crystal Palace
For the first time in 14 years it’s an all Premier League quarter-final line-up.
