Gordon, Kelly, And Longstaff Start Against Chelsea For Place In Quarterfinal

Newcastle are hoping to end a winless streak with a continuation of their Carabao Cup run this evening. Redemption is on hand after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea just a few days ago.

This is the side Eddie Howe has named against the Blues at St. James’ Park for a ticket to the quarterfinals. It has five changes from the weekend. The good news is Anthony Gordon is back in the team after missing out with injury.

Here is the team team Enzo Moresca has selected for the visitors.

Belief may be starting to wane on this campaign with Newcastle mired in the bottom half of the table. However, advancing in this competition is a very real prospect. A win today could jumpstart better days ahead.

Brentford at home… Second easiest game in the whole draw. Even just being at home for once feels like a weird stroke of luck.

    Is it our year?

I`m not counting my chickens but Brentford at home has got to be better than playing any of the red scum away.

    Eddie talking to the bbc

On the draw: “Copy and paste in terms of what I say each time. I want a home draw because this place is an amazing venue to play in and that was shown again tonight. Sold out, great atmosphere, good performance and I hope everyone feels a bit better about themselves now.”

    And more

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Really good performance tonight, especially in the first half. We got our pressing attitude bang on and got a lot of regains high up the pitch, which is where the first goal came from. Delighted with the contribution from the whole squad.”

On learning from Sunday’s match v Chelsea: “You always learn from every game and try to put things into practice in the next match. Playing the same opponent yes, but a very different team, I’m sure they also took things from Sunday for tonight.

“I just felt there was a better feel in our out of possession delivery tonight. We were much better on the details and turning the regains into chances going forwards.

“Second half it wasn’t an easy game to manage. They were bringing on some good players from the bench to add to the quality they already had on the pitch but I thought we defended really well.”

On making changes with a quick turnaround: “You have the game on the horizon, so that is what you are looking at. Two days to recover before another one, so we will have to wait and find out if we managed it well.

“We also wanted to look after one or two players who we thought needed protection, some players deserved to play and stake their claim for more regular time and they did their chances no harm.”

Chelsea were awful at the back in the first half, I think a league two team would have scored against them. Nice to get some confidence but I don’t think we’ll get many easier games than that this season.
As for the midfield, Tonali was a bit better but I thought Longstaff did more to stake his claim for a place in the team at the weekend.

Very encouraging performance, but you can’t go overboard because it’s at home v very much a Chelsea second 11, although still a very good 11. Nonetheless, the changes have us a lift, and it’s interesting because we haven’t really mixed it up before, looking for that spark, and we did and we got it.

You wouldn’t object to this starting 11 v Arsenal.

    …………………..Pope.
    Livra…….Schar……Kelly………Hall.
    ………………….Tonali.
    ……..Bruno………………..Willock.
    ..Gordon………..Isak…………..Joel.

Or even object if Krafth or Lobby started, with Bruno, Barnes and Livra coming in off the bench.

    We did play well.

I knewfrom just doing a bit of reading online and watching online that Joelinton was a top left sided attacker, and then we played him at CF, where he simply floundered, up top alone, in a bad side, and all because Mike Ashley thought he’d double in value, I’m quite convinced of that, and in fact he halved in value or worse. He’s great in midfield, when fired up, but he’s consistently better further forward. Selection headache for Eddie Howe, but I’d keep him there for Arsenal, with Willock in behind, Gordon on the right, and Barnes off the bench.

I won’t be awarding and MOM titles, despite the fact that I slept on it.

It was a great team performance with many good displays, I could pick almost every player. Also good that we utilised two different plans, proving we have at least two!: plan ‘A’ and Plan ‘D’.*

I hope Joel refuels with “Shell V Power” because he sure covered a lot of ground.

An observation before I bid you good morning.

I’ve said it before. The best keeper we’ve ever had, including……, is Pope.

Still, he hasn’t hit the amazing form since coming back from injury. Last night he did the work, but he completely missed a punch and their corners were so close to our goal line! What did he do? Stayed rooted on his line, previously he would’ve nonchalantly collected all those off everyone’s heads.

Before you attack, a reminder, maybe I didn’t say it?

He’s still the best keeper we’ve every had 🙂

    Good morning.

Well that was certainly more like it. V good 1st half but sat back too much in the 2nd and BDB gave me kittens again when he came on with their balls in behind him.

Surely Kelly gets a run now. His pace made the difference at the back. We can’t keep playing a high line with Shaer and Burn. Krafth was v solid too.

Hall is just getting better and better. Sad he had to wait so long until Botman got injured and BDB moved to CB.

Have we stumbled on another lucky accident? For me ST, BG and big Joe have never really worked and I do wonder if ST was bought with eventually replacing BG in mind but there were no takers at 100M for Bruno.

I really like ST’s quick one touch passing. It seems a lot more progressive than Bruno who seems to be getting caught in possession more and more and doesn’t look 100% fit. Should we have sold Bruno at his peak like L’pool dd with Coutinho and Villa with Grealish

Here’s how United players rated overall after the Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea:

    Nick Pope 7

Mostly routine stuff but picked up a much-needed clean sheet to boost confidence.

    Emil Krafth 9

A defensive masterclass and he did it with the minimum of fuss. A vastly underrated star. Man of the match.

    Fabian Schar 7

Battled hard and kept his composure after first half booking.

    Lloyd Kelly 7

Done himself no harm with a balanced display.

    Lewis Hall 8

Afforded a warm ovation when taken off after a near-immaculate display at both ends.

    Sandro Tonali 8

This was his best performance of the season with the shackles arguably off with Bruno’s absence. A warm ovation shows he’s the fans man.

    Sean Longstaff 8

Made a difference and enjoyed a fine display on his 27th birthday.

    Joe Willock 8

Up for the fight in the middle. And brought something different offensively.

    Anthony Gordon 8

Set the tone early in the game with a strong challenge which got the crowd up. A tenacious warrior for the Magpies.

    Joelinton 7

Recovered from early sitter to play big part in the opener. A strong display.

    Alexander Isak 8

Scored one and had a big hand in another. Gave something to aim for in the final third.

At times it looked as if Tonali was playing as a 6. Happy days if true as that has been a problem position protecting the back 4 for ages. Good to see the little Joe / big Joe combo working again too.

I note it was Sean Longstaff’s 27th birthday yesterday! He had a good game yesterday – we always seem to get good results when he’s in the team!
He does a lot of the gritty stuff in an unappreciated way.

No way I’d knock the lad just grateful for his effort & determination.

    Well done Sean!
