Gordon, Kelly, And Longstaff Start Against Chelsea For Place In Quarterfinal

Newcastle are hoping to end a winless streak with a continuation of their Carabao Cup run this evening. Redemption is on hand after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea just a few days ago.

This is the side Eddie Howe has named against the Blues at St. James’ Park for a ticket to the quarterfinals. It has five changes from the weekend. The good news is Anthony Gordon is back in the team after missing out with injury.

Here is the team team Enzo Moresca has selected for the visitors.

Belief may be starting to wane on this campaign with Newcastle mired in the bottom half of the table. However, advancing in this competition is a very real prospect. A win today could jumpstart better days ahead.

Howay The Lads!

Anyone know if Joe Willock was given our second goal from last night? I read that he’s claiming it!

Cracking performance from the lads last night, also great to see the performance silenced the many of the bed wetters where they either didn’t post at all or very rarely. Their absence and lack of palsy’s is very telling lol.

Brentford at home in the next round is brilliant that’s 2 home games on the trot. Brentford will still be a threat but we’re are totally different team at home. Onto the next game against Arsenal and if we get a good result there than that should surely kick start our season as the lads looked great last night. Longstaff done brilliant last night I thought and give us that balance, does he start against Arsenal is the question? Bruno looked good when he came on also so let’s wait and see. But I’m expecting a good pumped up performance on Saturday but I do hate the 12:30 kick offs.

Wouldn’t say that Tonali was the defensive midfield – he was more like the the central up field presser. He got in tackles took the ball off their defence as they tried to play out – in fact he was everywhere.
What I liked we moved the ball a lot quicker first half without the stupid two yard pass to a player usually Bruno who is marked. How many times did Schar cross field pass the ball to Hall. Thought Kelly started poorly gave the ball away first five minutes after that he got better. Longstaff also had a good game along with Willock. I gave big Joe our Man of the Match – he was immense playing wide left.

I don’t know what to do with Bruno -where to play him-tho- great player makes us tick but gives me the willies when playing in front of the defence holds on to the ball to long tends to get to near players especially Tonali which tends to smother him

Why anyone engages with or hearts Zorro’s posts as if he’s an actual fan is baffling. One of the more transparent WUMs.

Hoping Eddie makes one or two tweaks for Arsenal. Not sure it sends a great message to the squad if they come in, play brilliantly but it doesn’t affect the weekend first 11.

I think Kelly’s earned a chance at CB ahead of Burn, and Longstaff has clearly made a case for himself. That onion in the bolognese comment was excellent. If he didn’t have a habit of fluffing passes/shots on goal he’d be a 40mil midfielder.

I hear what you’re saying and normally I would agree- Eddie will revert back to his tried and tested

I think last night however was more than just better individual performances from some but also a better team cohesion balance and display than we’ve seen ( exception of Man City) for ages

Eddie will have a lot of food for thought but he’s a stubborn one

I can see Kelly and Kraft keeping their places but Bruno will return but maybe rest Tonali? Otherwise it will be Longstaff

Front 3 worked better as well and we pressed well but Chelsea didn’t do themselves any favours 🙂

Chelsea showed us total disrespect changing 11 players and got what they deserved.
I think one or two players should keep their places but doubt they will. Tonali looks better than Bruno as the go to man but Bruno will be back and Tonali will play the subservient role.

Such a conundrum but we look so much better as a team with Joelinton at LW

Can Eddie convince Gordon that he can do RW for a while ? If he properly puts everything into the position I think he could be just as productive on that side and it would be better for team balance overall

    On Jo at LW…

He’s played well there before but, again like when Barnes plays, AG gets shoved out right and that isn’t his best position.

So, what Eddie gains on the swings he loses on the roundabouts, it will be interesting how we line up against Arsenal.

Kelly and Krafth did their chances no harm and their pace made a big difference compared to Sunday’s game.

Tonali, who I’ve been waiting to step up performances, was much more involved without Bruno pulling the strings and commanding the ball. What does Eddie do there?

What yesterday did show, albeit just one game, is that we have the players to dramatically change our style of play away from the 43 and 2 wingers up front with Isak that had previously failed to win in 5 matches.

I’ll stick with my opinion that our best line up would be 352 with Hall and Tino as wingbacks and Isak and AG up front.

I’d be tempted to try a back three of Krafth, Schar, Kelly and with Bruno, Tonali and Jo adding to the two wingbacks to make the five in the middle.

Burn has been a true warrior for us but he is defo starting to make more mistakes and his lack of pace is a real weakness.

With Tino and Hall as WB’s and Krafth and Kelly behind them that massively strengthens our pace both defensively and offensively down the flanks.

Gordon and Isak as a roaming front two with pace will give any defence problems.

    Over to you Eddie 🙂

We keep giving players extensions until they have no value.
Sell them after service but when they are still quality but on the wane.
Why weren’t Almiron and Wilson sold a couple of years ago? Trippier interested Munich in Jan and they allegedly wanted to pay 13 mil. We end up selling Anderson and Minteh. Disaster.
Would you get 100 mil for Grealish now?

    Afternoon All

Still buzzing after that fabulous victory last night, and just so pleased to have progressed to the next round.

It wasn`t a perfect performance by any stretch of the imagination, and the Toon are still not firing on all cylinders, and can clearly play a lot better, but it was great to see the lads show real character to grind out the victory.

No doubt Eddie has a real selection dilemma for the game on Saturday as a few players have really stepped upto the plate,

despite Kelly having a really good game last night, i still think Eddie will restore Big Dan, but he may restore Longstaff to the midfield, we seem to have a better balance and more fluency with Sean in the engine room.

He might not always catch the eye, but i personally think we have a lot more cohesion when the hod carrier is around.

Enjoyed the game last night. A bit tense in the 2nd half but I just felt that we weren’t going to concede.
Hall seems to be getting better each game. Big test for him, if picked, against Saka.
I thought Tino looked more confident and better than he has been recently.
I also thought Bruno looked sharper too when he came on.

    Bills Son Is Back

Hi Bill, i personally would love to see Tino and Hall playing as wing backs, those two lads are very talented footballers, and their real strength is going forward, so think we could be more of a potent threat in the final third with those two lads as wing backs.

Afternoon mate, in answer to your question, Eddie is no different to most managers who seem to trust some players more than others, which is my reason in thinking big Dan will be restored on Saturday, i will reflect my thoughts in my Bingo selection for the Arsenal game Jim mate.

I think it would be very hard on Kelly and Krafth to be ditched for Saturday. We’ve struggled all season with the same issues but these 2 seemed to come in and really address them at the back, ie Burn’s and Schar’ chronic lack of pace. Really don’t know why we are giving these two 33 year old CB’s extensions. Have to be more ruthless to ever crack PSR.

Kelly copes with the ball in behind, DB doesn’t. Simple as. Could possibly still have Schar as long as Kelly is alongside him.

Can’t be coincidence with SL. So much stick but the stats don’t lie.

Tonali seems to play better without BG. Quite a conundrum but I don’t think we’d get anywhere near 100M for BG now.

    There’s an old saying…

If you keep doing the same thing, don’t expect different results.

Eddie needs to change things and he has the players to do it.

He might think changing things against a team like Arsenal is too risky…

I’d say there is more risk not to.

One thing is for certain on Saturday…

Arsenal will know all about Schar and Burn’s lack of pace and will look to play balls in behind them all game long.

If we lose to those type of passes and goals I won’t be a happy chappy.

    Bruno Guimaraes
    A real conundrum for EH.
Only really affective if the entire team is picked to play to his strengths and counter his weaker points.
    Is he that good.
At his best you’d have to say yes.
Slightly off form for whatever reason and you have a problem.
All eggs in one basket sort of thing.

I’ve been saying for a while thst Eddie shud play wing backs. Hall would be a better wing back than full back.

Also if we have two completely different ways of setting up, teams will always wonder what way we are going to set up the team with very different questions asked.

    Hope Kelly holds his place

I thought Krafth had a decent game last night. A very decent game, but to say he has pace is not true. He got absolutely murdered for pace when Mudryk ran him. He is an intelligent defender and got a few last second tackles in luckily, but he is not pacey.

I agree with most people and I thought we looked more solid with Kelly at centre back.

Longstaff does the dirty work and gets mocked by some fans, but we look better with him in the team. Just does the easy stuff well. I just wish he could pass.

And why can’t Nick Pope kick a ball straight. Great shot stopper though.

Having Longstaff and Miley and Joe, apart from the Brazilians and Tonali isn’t a bad thing.

We can mix it up, even during one game, keeping them all fresh and match fit. Five substitutions, remember.

Both Kelly and Krafth showed enough for me for them to start against Arsenal.

Schar has lost a bit of pace and BDB never had any, so a non brainer for me.

Longstaff-Tonali- Joel, or Tonali-Bruno-Joel. either for me and a nice problem for Eddie. Willock off the bench and Miley coming back. all looking better now.

AG has to start LW though always!!
