Gordon, Hall, And Kelly Start Against West Ham

Newcastle are back in action after an extended break with today’s clash against West Ham at St. James’ Park. The Magpies will hope the fortnight plus between matches will not hamper the momentum of four straight wins.

After the weekend’s action, Newcastle can climb into sixth place with a win. The Hammers have struggled this season so anything less than all the spoils would be a disappointment.

This is the side Eddie Howe has selected. It has just one change from the 3-1 win at Nottingham Forest with Lloyd Kelly in for the suspended Dan Burn. Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier are also back and available from the bench.

Here is who Julen Lopetegui has named for the visitors.

Howay The Lads!

Mackems lost 1 nowt, from 5 points clear at the top to 5 points off the top. No win in 6 😆

I’m very sad to learn of the death of John McNamee. Apart from seeing him play many games for NUFC I met him many moons ago when I walked into The Comrades Club in W/Bay. He was sitting there as large as life with John McGrath and big Frank Brennan. I thought wow three of my hero’s in one go. I never saw Big Frank play but I saw plenty of the two John’s both as hard as nails and very solid players for our team.

Good bye John I used to admire your 110% commitment from the “Poplar side”

There was an article in the Chronicle about McNamee yesterday, with an extract from a book by Sir Alex Ferguson. Ferguson had been lippy to big John during a match they played in. Apparently big John was waiting outside the changing rooms to thump Ferguson and he refused to come out. Ferguson hid in the changing room until McNamees team (Celtic??) had to leave on the bus.
Say him play when he signed for the Toon, more times than not the opposition player was launched after a tackle.

So, has anyone given up on Newcastle? Switched allegiances to say, City*?

Kidding of course, I’m sure we’re almost all still here 🙂

Now, Palace. Don’t start with the this’ll be easy stuff! There ain’t no such thing in the PL. Drop off one notch, you lose. A notch and a half, smashed.

So, what to do today? You know, it’s a tough one.

When we go after teams, press high, we get loads of chances, look good. But we’re vulnerable with counters and sucker punches.

When we sit back, we’re hard to break down, what with all that training we’ve had with past coaches. But, we get fewer chances so we need to be sharp when we get them, and fans (me included) don’t like the approach.

    So, what to do today?

Both. Mix it up. Thing is, we’re making it a habit to concede first, which puts the other team in control, regarding tactics, if you know what I mean.

My prediction today? Let me think. The odds are for us, if you’re wondering.

    * Careful if you chose them, they’re on a little rocky run themselves. Maybe you want to wait and see 😉

    Matchday 🙂

I suppose (as ever as there’s 2 teams involved) today will be about how Palace play

As they are at home you’d imagine they would be adventurous so giving us space to hit them on counter if we can defend well

They certainly ripped us apart last season but they have lost Olise and I understand from some reports that they are not playing on front foot recently and have been happy to concede possession to opposition even at home

Well we have spent a lot of time on here since Hammers bemoaning our inability to break down the low block so that doesn’t bode well

If we do face a low block I hope what chances we do get we then take them especially set pieces!!

A Forest level performance should get us 3 points, anything less than that (or definitely if the shocking Fulham level) then we may be the gift that keeps on giving to struggling sides this aeason

Are we likely to produce another underwhelming performance?
( although we did well on patches on Monday night) as ever it depends on what side of ours shows up

It sounded that Willock’s and Bruno’s injuries wouldn’t keep them out of contention so will there be other changes than the one we all expect – Burn for Kelly?

Eddie being Eddie you’d maybe think not

In addition , arguably none of the subs including Tonali staked a massive claim to start instead of those who had on Monday

So unless he wants to ease the 2 injured ones back in then I reckon he will go with the obvious change only ……but he does have to get it right and all starters in the mood from the off

If he does then maybe a tight win for us

If we don’t turn up in any respect then we’ll struggle to get a draw

Ironically as we’ve had less than 2 weeks to prepare for this one we might be surprised 🙂

I read that Joelinton may not be selected to play in today’s game. Is Eddie Howe saving him for the Liverpool game? As big Joe is only 1 booking away from a one game ban perhaps that may be why?

But then again who am I to know eh?

I’ve got him in my Eddie Bingo team and I believe Eddie likes to check out what I’ve picked before he finalises the team, so! 🙂

Very fond memories of big John from the Gallowgate End. Kicking lumps out of forwards. A certain red card player these days. RIP big man.
    Palace.
I think we play better away where the home team tries to make the play. We are hopeless at breaking down low blocks.
Let’s hope we stuff them 3 nil and we destroy Guedi and put an end to this nonsense of 70 mil for a bang average CB. I would rather have gig Dan any time. We missed him in air last week

They say when Joel plays well we win and I agree. When he’s in the mood, he breaks up opposition attacks, helps his mate with the MF, even gets chances.

Keep an eye out for him. Me, that’s what I’ll be focusing on, first fifteen minutes. Then I’ll place my bet.*

    * I never bet for my team to lose. That would be too bipolar.

If Howe was disappointed with the performance of the substitues on Monday, then the starting line up is likely to be unchanged. Other than BDB and I never thought I would miss our man from Blyth.

U18’s currently 5-1 down with around 30 min to go 🙁
