Newcastle travel to Brentford today after tallying a well-deserved point against league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday. While it’s been a rollercoaster start to the campaign, Newcastle can do themselves a lot of good with a victory over the Bees; a club they’ve had a lot of away success against recently.
This is the team Eddie Howe has selected for today’s clash. It has two changes from the midweek draw with Harvey Barnes and Sean Longstaff in for Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

A win should see Newcastle comfortably placed in the top ten with a platform to build upon. However, the Brentford will be eager to carve the same path for themselves. A top performance is needed to get Newcastle on track for a push for Europe.

Comment #3Love to see Barnes starting.
A player that comes in for some undeserved condescending criticism about his limitations, or associated with being better off the bench.
Barnes has been unlucky to have started games where the whole side wasn’t playing at its best. But he always looks top quality to me. A better dribbler than he is given credit for, and knows when to give-and-go, as all top players do.

Comment #5I guess the thinking is Gordon and Tonali ran themselves into the ground
Gordon didn’t exactly track back amazing against Salah 2nd half so do we really want him starting against Mbuemo
Saying that Barnes as probably the deadliest finisher in the league from out wide so we can cause them big trouble
Feel a bit gutted Bruno will go back to the 6 but must not think Tonali is fit enough to start so quickly

I feel the same way about Barnes his starts are usually when we have no striker or the midfield balance isn’t that great
Also think he suffers from not having a no 10 or a striker with good hold up play so he can do those little 1 – 2s and then shoot which he used to do with Maddison at Leicester

Comment #9Brentford have the best home record in the Premier League this season. They have scored an incredible amount of goals in the first 15mins at home, so it is going to start as an onslaught. This is going to be a tough match. They’re starting basically the same team that lost to Villa on Weds albeit Norgaard comes back in after injury.
I’m disappointed Tonali doesn’t start but maybe Howe is hoping that fresher legs are needed against a very physical and intense Brebtford when at home. I have to say that Gordon has not looked sharp for much of the season and has had a few injury scares. Maybe Howe is trying to protect him a bit if he’s not 100% with the busy Christmas schedule looming and an important League Cup tie coming soon.

Comment #10Eddie starting to rotate the squad a bit to refresh tired legs. Glad to see it and even if some disagree with the starting lineup, you have to love that bench!

I think Eddie Howe felt they were “worn out” after the Liverpool game. I’m happy with the team Eddie has picked and have both Tonali & Gordon waiting in the wings!

I see Eddie has made a few changes for todays game, but i fully understand the logic due to the quick turnover, and the fact Tonali and Gordon basically ran themselves into the ground against Liverpool.
Longstaff and Barnes i expect will do a good job and not let us down, and with a very strong bench we might just have the players to affect the game in a positive way n the second half.
My prediction a very entertaining 2-2 draw.

Comment #20Think Howe mentioned Tonali had cramp towards the end of the Liverpool game.
Probably just being cautious and making use of the squad by rotating with games in quick succession.

Because Messi and Ronaldo done no defensive work at all. Walked most of the game until the ball was in the final third.
