Newcastle travel to Brentford today after tallying a well-deserved point against league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday. While it’s been a rollercoaster start to the campaign, Newcastle can do themselves a lot of good with a victory over the Bees; a club they’ve had a lot of away success against recently.
This is the team Eddie Howe has selected for today’s clash. It has two changes from the midweek draw with Harvey Barnes and Sean Longstaff in for Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

A win should see Newcastle comfortably placed in the top ten with a platform to build upon. However, the Brentford will be eager to carve the same path for themselves. A top performance is needed to get Newcastle on track for a push for Europe.

Comment #241We show up against the “big” clubs.
We let our levels drop against the lesser lights.. both home and away.
This is in part on the manager but where are the leaders and winners in our team?
For the most part we don’t have any. Burn is a trier and seems to try and lead by example. But he isn’t in the class of player to grab all the players around him and give them a shake. Bruno tries, is a star, but he has never won anything, and is more bark than bite as a leader. Trippier was a good leader until whatever happened to him off the pitch. Not he seems to have lost it. Hoping he can find it along with his fitness. Lascelles is still club captain, but this team has moved on from him and what he provided at the end of the ashley era.
Schar, Isak, Gordon Big Joe etc. not captain types.
I’d say the next logical captain that we have in our squad is Tonali. He was captain at AC milan and of Italy’s U21. It was great that we could get him. But then the whole betting fiasco and his ban struck. We couldn’t give him the arm band after that, not right away. And you can see how he has the quality but the scandal being too recent, he doesn’t seem to be able to rally up his teammates.
All this to say, we need leaders on the pitch to grab hold of the game, with and without the ball, and get some cohesiveness back. Right now the team just looks all over the place.

Comment #242I’d say the Ostriches are beginning to see sense now. Lose the cup match and Eddie can go. Zero motivational ability beyond big games. Today was an abysmal second half.

Comment #243deluded self entitled fans need to live in the real world. Brentford have won 7, drawn 1 and lost none of their home games this season. it’s no disgrace losing to Brentford away, most teams do. Newcastle might win their next match.

Comment #247Why is Eddie rumoured to give contract extensions to Wilson and Schar and Tripps?
Ditto the odd buys of Kelly and Osula.
My opinion is the club is not giving Eddie any funding this January and he is having to make do.
These alleged extensions are not the actions of a club going anywhere fast

Maybe this is how Eddie operates

right order “.
Please start with our strongest team, get ahead, stop the opposition scoring, subs later on as the game dictates. Please stop chasing games

Re. Miley, I was wondering about his absences and I reckon he has been sold,
The PSR bogeyman is still biting the clubs arse and he is the most outstanding home grown player we have. Pure profit!
It would not surprise me if negotations have been conducted on the sly and he is on his way to somwhwere like Bayern in January.
That is possibly why he is not in the match day squads and is currnently in cotton wool.
OK he has played for the U21s but there isn’t teh same risk re injuries there.

Comment #254I know the R word has already been mentioned and I don’t want to subscribe to the dark thoughts
But as a long time watcher of football there have been many many examples of teams that were too good to be Rrrrrrrd, that have gone down that crooked path for us to be complacent and say it can’t happen.
We need (for once) a little help from Santa over Christmas!

Comment #258Onmeed, it’s all predictable. Predictable favouritism. Predictable substitutions. Predictable 433. Predictable analysis afterwards.
He’s a good coach and a very decent human being but I don’t think he’s any better than a mid table manager.
I’ve been waiting to be proved wrong and would love a big run now but we have serious flaws which many on here hid under the excuse of injuries even though that was clearly flawed thinking.

Comment #259I think we’ve got too many poor/mediocre/non PL standard players in the squad. You might get a decent performance once in a while from them -but no consistency for a season (or seasons).
I’d put Barnes/Hall/Murphy in this group there are more though.

Seems about right.
Camaraderie among the players seemed ok against Liverpool but seemed to be absent today.
Unlike the dodgy six teams we don’t seem to confront opposition players and challenge them after dodgy tackles. Noone rushed to Gordon’s defence when he was elbowed by Van Dick which prompts officials to act. That makes the ref think about cards which then gets VAR involved. Opposition players have love ins at SJP with officials but we don’t
do that when away from home.
Bruno doesn’t seem to shout the odds to players, just gesticulates at the crowd.
Our ‘game management’ seems naive.
There’s a spark missing which is worrying. Difficult to pinpoint but as they say, ‘ shy bairns get nowt’ .
Remember when we won the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles a few years back. That team had unity from Manager, coach, players alike. The British Lions have it.
A winning mentality and steely determination doesn’t just happen. it has to be instilled from the top.
A step change in club and player culture is needed to get to the next level.

Gordon had Newcastle’s first shot on target in the second half with 93 minutes played. Unfortunately, it was too little too late, a big rethink is needed at United on the evidence of this.

Comment #268Have to say I can’t see how this gets any better now.
We are essentially a one trick wonder.
4/3/3 and high press, high intensity.
Only trouble is we simply cannot keep that up.
Can’t maintain it for more than one game.
Can’t maintain it for a full game.
Simply not possible.
Not for any group of players.
The club have brought in Mitchell.
Do they/we back him to find a top manager he can actually work with.
A change of direction.
We could keep Eddie and see how things go after the New Year.
Only trouble is I have a feeling this could implode and go down hill very quickly.

That first Brentford goal.
Just like the 2 we conceded against a ten man Liverpool last season.
One pass and we are done.
Just like the goals we conceded against Forest when we lost 3-0.
One pass and we are done.
This has been a huge issue for over a year now.

You seemed to be very quiet about that when we were battering PSG in the CL. You don’t seem to be reminding us of how you thought Isak was too lightweight for the PL in the event he was, easy to crow about your predictions of doom when the chips are down. You aren’t so chirpy when we’re doing well.

Comment #275Yesterday and Wednesday performances made me think of Rafa’s short blanket analogy
We struggled against Palace to create chances and to correct that we were more on front foot
The chances then flowed but at both ends – 5 scored and 7 conceded
I haven’t looked at goals against in both of the matches since watching live but my strong impression is that for most if not all misplaced passes were at root of most if not all
Against strong attacking sides and with a defence on front foot and little pace in centre then we were quickly undone
We all knew about Brentford’s attacking prowess at home ( different team away) and I’m sure Eddie would have cautioned them about avoiding conceding a quick goal
All of us would have probably gone for same midfield but I accept Eddie’s judgement on fatigue after their battle on Wednesday although I feel it did cost us
We’re not the only team with fluctuating fortunes this season and we enjoy other’s floundering but gnash our teeth at our own
Whether some like it or not Eddie is likely to be given at least until end of season and may not get any reinforcements in ( if we don’t move player(s) out)
We have to hope with Botman back to improve defence and eddie finding more cohesion throughout team we can still get Europe and a cup
After watching his interview with Jordan I doubt there will be any change in his belief in his core 433 ( which out of possession is 451)
So until he and recruitment team can start the transitioning towards a side comfortable with possession we’re seemingly stuck with these Jeykll and Hyde displays
When we’re good we’re very good but when we’re bad………..
Without a king size blanket let’s hope we get next few displays in the good variety

Three years to decide whether it’s an extension or a new ground?
Watch this space and keep watching and watching.
Some time next year the decision will be a new ground. And then it will take years to find the land and even more years to get plannning permission.
And then we all die or they sell up.
But I am not entitled. Happpy at sjp as it is.
