Newcastle will have vengeance on their minds when Brentford come to St. James’ Park today for the league cup quarterfinal. The Mags were swarmed by the Bees in a 4-2 away defeat a few weeks ago. However, the St. James’ Park setting this evening will hopefully make for a different outcome.
Newcastle were outstanding in downing Leicester on Saturday with a romping 4-0 win. The lads put in an almost perfect display and will hope to carry that momentum into today’s ultra-important cup clash.
A second straight win and a ticket to the Carabao cup semi-final would certainly help assuage some of this campaign’s frustrations. So let’s hope the lads can get it done tonight.
Howay The Lads!
I will unfortunately not be available to post the teams or watch this match so this can stand in as the match thread.

Comment #4Cheers Neil for the new thread…
It was absolutely fantastic to see that clip of Botman back on the pitch. After such a long absence, having him get a solid 60 minutes in for the U21s against Chelsea is a massive boost.
While BDB has certainly been impressive and arguably our best CB this season, there’s no denying that Botman has been sorely missed. His return will undoubtedly solidify the defense. I agree that Eddie will likely ease him back into action gradually to manage his match fitness, but once he’s up to speed, he should absolutely be a first choice starter IMO…
The prospect of a Botman led CB pairing with a new RCB signing in January is very intriguing and exciting. It could be a formidable and one of the EPL’s best CB pairings at the back (if we sign well which I’m sure we will). On that note…I’m curious to see if NUFC will make a move in January or wait until the summer? We shall wait and see.
Regardless, the news of Botman’s imminent return is HUGE. It’s a massive morale boost for the team, and it was great to see so many players supporting him during the U21s match. I noted it was Hall, Longstaff, Isak, Lascelles, along with Eddie and Jason all showing their support.

So 2cnd in a trilogy of winnable games ( before we move on to the next lot 🙂 )
I’m hoping for a similar pattern to last round – lose poorly at Chelsea in league then beat them comfortably in cup at home so let’s do same to Brentford tonight
Given Brentfords atrocious away form and them not yet having faced a PL side in competition we would be forgiven for thinking this should be an easy ride ……but we all know it’s not like that
Much may depend on how they set up.
Apparently they played 5 at back at Chelsea and conceded possession and we know how we fare against that tactic
However they set up we simply need to be far tighter at back than 10 days ago as their forwards are lethal.given time and space
I’d expect similar side to Saturday but maybe Tripps in for Livramento ?
Both managers will put their best sides out I suspect as both want to progress to semi’s
We can do it if we play to our strengths and at our best

On Brentfords atrocious away form I thought tonight was an absolute given, I watched their full game on Sunday and they looked like a real handful, maybe it was because they have an unusually excellent record at Stamford Bridge since their return to the PL but we defiinetely shouldn’t take them for granted. We absolutely gifted West Ham the advantage by letting them silence the crowd, none of that tonight.

JohnJ, I can’t watch the games or listen to them, I have to watch the next day, so I don’t comment on them.
Hopefully will get to a few games next season.
I recall you posting about that but I was saying it’s good to see you posting at ANY time! Gan Canny Hinny. 🙂

Comment #10That’s two for Wolves, four for Bournemouth and four for Bromley, they should have a system though where winners go in to a smaller pool to give those with no success a better chance to win. That’s five lots I’ve had in the ballot now.

Yes crowd will be important tonight but in
Cup games with some different people than usual doesn’t always get going
Often needs a catalyst to spark them ( early goal would be good) but hopefully tonight everyone will be up.for it
You would hope that our players have finally learned the lessons of West Ham Brighton etc – they know what this game means for us and them – no mistakes tonight

My Granddaughter and i entered just about every ballot last season and never got one ticket
We didn’t renew membership this year as seemed pointless
We both thought there should be a system ( possibly too costly to organise) whereby those successful in one were excluded from next

Maybe not excluded from the next one but definitely put in to a smaller pool until everyone who has entered gets one, sounds complicated but surely a decent bit of software can sort that out.

Comment #14Wings going for £200 pp for Wolves so they’re not selling out, fanciful to think we’ll sell out an 80K stadium for a Wednesday night in January against teams like Wolves.

It should be all this with success go in to a 20% ballot leaving the 80% for those entering with an ever increasing chance until it resets.

Comment #20Eddie Howe is a true gentleman of the sport and yes a great stand up guy with huge morals. In the same spirit as our late great Sir Bobby Robson was.
He is a very good man managing manager that gets the very best out of the lads. It’s unbelievable what he managed when he first took the reins. He steered a ship that was going through the most hazardous of waters and still took the job when man at wouldn’t have.
The stick he gets on here from a select few is bang out of order IMO and these types are the very same types that hounded SBR away from the club he cherished. It’s obvious who they’re. Anyway off into the toon with the missus for the final Christmas shopping then to the match. Big performance needed.

That one most certainly pulled at the heartstrings mate, it just proves the measure of the man, not only is Eddie Howe a great manager, but more importantly a truly tremendous human being!! and a fantastic ambassador for our club.

Comment #31Not sure if there is anything in this story but Chris Rigg has been linked to a move to the Toon in the summer.
I know for a fact that most of his family are Toon fans, so there could be a lot of friendly persuasion going on.
One thing is for sure, if he did sign for the old enemy the mackem supporters would be absolutely devastated.

Not that keen on Bellingham but young Miley is touted to be even better than his brother so we could do worse than bring him in.
I think it`s all media BS anyway mate, besides, i think none of the Sunderland players are good enough for the PL, mot yet anyway.
You just have to look at their superstar, Jack Clark, can`t even get a start at Ipswich

Comment #36Eddie doesn’t get any stick on here, everyone loves the man. You can love the guy as a man and still think he’s run his course and not good enough forbthe job.
But you’re too retarded to understand this, so instead you try incite negativity and arguments with your waffle trying to make things seem different to what they are. You’re genuinely a cancer on this blog.

Comment #37Need to make sure that we get after Brentford from the off – get at them. Do not let Mbeumo and Wissa get a run at our players or there’ll be troubl for us.
Plus they’ve got a couple of dirty players who seem to get away with murder Collins and Norgaard.

Comment #40If we play at the same levels and intensity as we did on Saturday. Then there shud only b one winner. Brentford will b very dangerous on the break with r ageing slow cbs and there fast forawrd line. We have to win everball every second ball and not give them a chance getting out and trying to counter attack. I’m going to go for a classic game under the lights tonight. Can see plenty of goals. 4-4 and the Toon to win on penalties lol. Naw 3-2 to the the Toon
