Newcastle will have vengeance on their minds when Brentford come to St. James’ Park today for the league cup quarterfinal. The Mags were swarmed by the Bees in a 4-2 away defeat a few weeks ago. However, the St. James’ Park setting this evening will hopefully make for a different outcome.
Newcastle were outstanding in downing Leicester on Saturday with a romping 4-0 win. The lads put in an almost perfect display and will hope to carry that momentum into today’s ultra-important cup clash.
A second straight win and a ticket to the Carabao cup semi-final would certainly help assuage some of this campaign’s frustrations. So let’s hope the lads can get it done tonight.
Howay The Lads!
I will unfortunately not be available to post the teams or watch this match so this can stand in as the match thread.

Comment #121Pleased to see Dubs is showing he still has quality.
Good use of the ball, few smart stops and didn’t put a foot wrong. Disappointed for him that he didn’t get a clean sheet, as he deserved one.

Brilliant all round.
P.S. Southampton, with VAR, as commentators are saying, would’ve just been awarded a penalty, plus red card against Liverpool. That’ll cost Southampton dearly. That’s why VAR is needed, teams like Liverpool then don’t get this kind of favours.

Comment #123Really hope Tonali being homesick is BS as he’s been absolutely immense the last 2 games. Surely no way back for SL now. Tonali has us playing quick first time passes and little 1-2’s as well as orchestrating much better possession football. Lovely to watch. Not to mention 2 cracking goals too.
Also seems like work has been done on set pieces rather than hopefully just lumping it in.
When Botman comes back and if we can keep the big guns we are really just a rapid ball playing RCB and a RW, plus a keeper who’s good with the ball at his feet, away from being a cracking team.

Tonalis agent came out almost immediately to end any rumours.
Said he isn’t looking to leave, loves Newcastle and loves playing in the best league in the world.
Worry not, he’s going nowhere.

Comment #126RH…His agent was pretty quick in coming out straight away and saying it was BS and since he’s the one who would be touting him around if there was any truth then I’m entitled to believe him.

Comment #131Bruno has always been a worldy but he is even better as an 8 with another World class Tonali as a 6, them 2 make us the best midfield in the PL

Comment #132We look so much more solid in the middle with Tonali there as well teams are no longer just cutting through us with 1 pass or a player dribbling with pace
Bruno just looks more impactful further forward yeah he’s not on the ball as much but when he is it’s near enough involvement in a chance of some sort
Also Gordon, Bruno, Joelinton and Willock early morning target practice!!! The amount of chances they fluff they could easily have a couple of goals a game

Comment #133I’d still hope we buy Guehi he is a better passer and faster than Schar and younger will make a great partnership with Botman

Aye the midfield looks far more solid.
It’s a positive in Bruno and Joelinton, that they’re hungry to win the ball and chase/press. But, it meant they were getting dragged up the pitch or side to side often, leaving massive spaces behind or in the middle of the pitch.
Tonali understands the positional game more, only closing and pressing fully when it’s sensible to do so. Choosing to sometimes sit back instead and hold his position which limits the opposition, as he closes off that central area and forces them to play wide, side to side or go long.
Shape looks far better with him sitting in there, patrolling and dictating.

Comment #138On way home – I wouldn’t say we were in top form but did enough to overcome Brentford who are a different team away from home. Disappointing to concede at the end but at the end of the day it makes no difference in a cup game. Tonali was immense apart from his 2 goals he ran the midfield and must be MotM.
I can’t work out if Bruno and Schar are banned in the first leg or not?

Yeah and I think Bruno and Joelinton don’t have to cover as much distance to try win the ball either as they are closer to the opposition
Plus Tonali seems to be able to pickup any loose balls
Also really liked when Willock came into the mix I feel that trio could be our best midfield if he can stay fit

Comment #140Yes i would strongly fancy us to beat Man Utd or Spurs over two legs in the semi final, as Liverpool or Arsenal would be an entirely different proposition in a two legged semi final, i feel we would stand a much better chance of beating one of those two in a final, and wouldn`t it be so sweet to beat liverpool in the final 😀

I wonder if we are really in for him.
lovely words from Thomas Frank, hoping we win it, I know he has also stated, that St. James Park is the best stadium in the PL for the atmosphere and fans.

“The only negative on Wednesday night, was that two Newcastle United players picked up suspensions.
A dominant United performance saw them deservedly beat Brentford.
Eddie Howe’s side moving into the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 victory, the Bees very luck to escape with a scoreline that flattered them.
United picked up three yellow cards, Tino Livramento picking up his first in the competition. However, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar were handed their second yellow cards in the Carabao Cup this season.
This means that both Schar and Bruno will now be suspended for the first leg of the semi-final.
If you pick up two yellow cards in the rounds of matches before the semi-final, you get a one game ban. Which is why Sean Longstaff wasn’t in the squad tonight.”

So Bruno stays where he belongs.
Him and Tonali will be the powerhouse for our success.

Schar and Bruno miss the first leg which will be away at Anfield depending on how hot the balls in the draw are.
We win at SJP then in the final bring the Cup home.

Comment #154Magic i got that wrong unfortunately. One of the Irish Mags said it!
Irish Rob, if you saw the list of mids I gave u, they are all better than Bruno.
But I think Tonali could also be in that group!
Great win, great performance, Sandro incredible.
And before anyone says I don’t like Bruno, his name is on the back of my Toon shirt, and the kids

Agree, guehi wud still be a huge signing for us, but at a fair price etc. He has a load of facets to his game. Brilliant in ground duels ( his stats are huge) great pace, decent distribution, decent on the ball.

Comment #159Great win for the Toon!
really a solid performance for almost the whole of the match.
Really wanted the clean sheet and I think it was Osula making the wayward pass that sprung their counter attack. He still shows some promise though and there is a player in there. Keep getting him minutes and he will come good.
Was hoping the two leg Semi Final was a thing of the pass but that just means two more chances to watch the Lads in action.

Comment #160What a cracking goal that first one was from Tonali. I was sat bang directly behind the goal and had the perfect view of it and the spin and swerve he put on it was sheer class. What a player we have in him. Great attitude and he is that missing link we were all wanting in the engine room. I saw his stats and he was absolutely everywhere on the pitch, a proper box 2 box MF and it won’t be long and he will be yet another player that will command a £100m transfer fee to get him.
What a signing he has turned out to be, our transfers have been off the charts since the new ownership.
