Newcastle are back in action after two terrific victories, the second of which propelled the Magpies into the Carabao Cup semifinals where they’ll take on Arsenal. Today will provide another test for consistency, an attribute sorely lacking this season.
The lads travel down to Ipswich Town, a club back in the big time after back to back promotions. At the historic Portman Road, the Magpies and traveling supporters will be greeted by a familiar site; a statue of Sir Bobby Robson who led the Tractor Boys to great success early in his career.
Newcastle are in need of another win to climb the league table. The 4-0 win against Leicester last weekend helped close the gap but Newcastle remain 12th in the table. All three points at Ipswich could alter that position dramatically.
Here is the side Eddie Howe has named for this important away fixture. It has one change from the win over Brentford in the league cup with Joe Willock in for the suspended Joelinton.

This is who impressive Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna has named for the hosts with local lad Leif Davis starting at left-back.

It’s vital Newcastle maintain their form from this past week and find some consistency. There’s no better time or place than today at Portman Road.

Comment #83Look how comfortably we’re able to play out from the back with Dubs. It highlights just how poor Pope is at distribution.

Comment #86A truly magnificent display by every Newcastle player today, but special mention to Big Dan Burn who really has been colossal in the heart of our defence, he has been a really great signing for us folks.

Brilliant by all, however. You can’t criticise 0-4.

Comment #98Jacob Murphy showing how good he is, shoving the overtop horrific critics on X he is a great winger who scores spectacular goals, that backheel for the assist too.
Isak, how good is he. Unbelievable, brilliant hat trick.

Comment #101That was just about as perfect a match as we could have wished for. A comfortable win, able to substitute key players early and even the players who played the full 90 minutes were never stressed. We knocked it around like a training session for the last 20 minutes.

Comment #104Class watching that mind, some tricky fixtures coming up but if we get through them we have an unbelievable run of games at home. Let’s see where this form takes us.

Comment #105Pope may be a better goalkeeper than Dubravka overall. But Dubravka’s distribution with the ball is leagues ahead of Pope’s. His throw outs, pass outs, goal kicks and generally how he makes himself available to be passed to because he is comfortable with the ball at his feet are much better. And when we are ahead and need to hold on to the ball, it makes a heck of difference.

Comment #109Wow! Where do you start ?
One of the most controlled start to finish performances I’ve ever seen.
Total and absolute domination.
Some of the 1 touch passing , through balls and cutbacks were a joy to watch. Set pieces showing more imagination too now.
Special mentions for Tonali and Murphy and of course Isak.
Would be v interesting to see just how many turnovers Tonali affected, quite phenomenal, especially first half.
Everyone has been saying all season we need a RW but how do you top Murphy’s performances recently?
As for Isak, well !!!…………I don’t have the words. You don’t even start a conversation under 150M.
Tbf Dubs has been sound, making decent saves and being better with the ball at his feet than Pope for sure.
I know people will say it’s only relegation threatened Leicester and Ipswich but whatever was said after WHU, CP & Brentford away is obviously having a galvanising effect. Hopefully onwards and upwards now. Europe could still be on.

Yeah next 2 are tricky and Villa were good today but if we play to recent form I think at least 4 points are achievable
Then a decent run in January apart from Spurs away
Tonali at the base of midfield seems to.have the missing bit as we are looking much better all around team now
Bigger tests coming though but surely we’re in a better place now

Comment #1114-0. What a week its been to b a Toon fan. I’ll enjoy it while it last. Good performance again from the lads yet again. 4points off 4th now. Let’s keep it up. Villa will b a whole lot tougher than Leicester and Ipswich. So I’m hoping we can turn up for that game and lift it a level and really make a statement. Let’s chase that champions league spot down it’s on. Isak with a hat trick motm for me followed by Murphy. HAPPY CHRISTMAS to the Toon army

Comment #119Yes I know we’ve just played 2 promoted teams and a cup tie at home, but whisper it quietly, are we in danger of at last finding some consistency and a midfield formation that optimises our collective talents. A great week. Bring on Villa, who are also playing well. Watching City I’ve concluded that Pep can only deliver results when he has all the players he needed for his football machine to work. If there’s a few cogs missing it just doesn’t work. They looked awful today. No movement, no penetration. Haaland looked like a championship striker. So I don’t think Pep could manage us. His machine costs too much to run.
