Pope, Tonali, And Wilson Start At Liverpool

Newcastle downed third-placed Nottingham Forest on Sunday at St. James’ Park but now face an even tougher test; a trip to league leaders Liverpool, who look destined to end Manchester City’s stranglehold on the division.

The Reds are a test Newcastle have failed to pass in recent history. It’ll take a top performance to get anything from tonight’s fixture.

This is the team Eddie Howe has named featuring two changes from the weekend. Alexander Isak misses out with a groin problem.

Arne Slot has selected the following lineup for the hosts.

The problem with Wilson being out so long is clear in his lack of sharpness. I’m half hoping that Osula will get 30mins or so.
If I were Dubs, I’d be really p*ssed off looking at how Pope has performed since coming back.

Not exactly a mountain to climb if it stays 1-0 and Isak and Barnes get thrown on.

    Doable for now.

Shouldn’t have lost his place in the team tbh

What was Tonali doing there in no man’s land.

If that was Bruno doing that he’d be slaughtered on here.
We have completely and utterly lost sight of just how good he is and how lucky we are to have a world class player like him playing for us.

Munster you don’t know he has the selection wrong, because there is no parallel universe with a different lineup to compare

You ‘think’ he has got the selection wrong

Why do we never learn to defend the cutback. Their goal was avoidable

Eddie now has to drop Pope and put Dubs back in. Pope looks like he’s wearing divers lead boots and his head is in the wrong place.
What’s more Dubs and the back 4/5 work as a unit.

Liverpool are open down the flanks but stop attacking breakouts with minor fouls that the ref blows for, they regroup, momentum is lost.

Why is Slott allowed in the changing room at half time. The touchline ban malarkey is toothless.

Last 15 minutes get Osulo on and Miley. Time for the youngsters to make a name for themselves.

Bruno world class ? Course he is.

I’d take 80mill. He’s extremely slow as I pointed out to much disapproval 2 years ago

Scratch that. No Isak on the bench. Oh well. Barnes it is.

Personally thought Wilson did ok apart from the miss. Looks busy and making a nuisance of himself.
Would like to see Osula get 30 mins though, as this Liverpool defence looks a bit vulnerable.

Pope owe dear me again struggles to his left –
Goal poor breakaway Tonali lost his man defenders turning back and Pope went down like a draw bridge.
Pudding down at Arsefield get near the edge of box have a shot ball instead of walking it in ball going to skid on surface

No, he has got it wrong Fray.

Pope shud not be there. It’s Eddie favouritism again. Oh yes he doesn’t do that!

    Miley should be in too

    Again, it’s Eddie’s youth problem

They haven’t got out of second gear

It’s poor. Bournemouth Forest Fulham didn’t do this

Commentator im listening too was saying best players in the world T-Alexander and Salah would destroy Hall. Eer no, Halls doing a grand job and some great tackles

We should be 0-0 or 1-1 in this but have yet to learn how to dictate play in these sort of matches.

Arsenal drawing with Forest so a win for us would close the gap on both of them

    Did Eddie get them right?

It`s not easy for Wilson tonight as he is pretty much up front on his own, and as you correctly mention not up to speed after his long absence mate.

Because he’s far more experienced and has history of scoring goals, it’s not hard to understand why he’s been picked

    Howe also trains him

Liverpool don’t give you a millisecond on the ball. Different level. We’re not good enough technically to beat them.

Is it certain that it would have been different if Dubravka and Osula had played.
I really like osula but has he done enough in the Premier league to be starting against the best team in the league

He picks him over Osula for experience, and specially at a ground like Anfield, but i expect young Osula to get a chance in the second half as i can`t see Wilson lasting the 90 minutes due to his long absence with injury.

    Clinical from Liverpool:

2 shots on target, 2 goals.

They have to be the quickest breaking team I’ve ever seen. Pounce on a mistake, get forward fast and get a shot away.
