Barnes, Dubravka, Isak, And Joelinton Start Against Brighton In The FA Cup

Newcastle face Brighton in an FA Cup fifth round tie at St. James’ Park today. The Magpies will hope to continue a second domestic cup journey with a win. Newcastle have a date at Wembley for the Carabao Cup finals against Liverpool in two weeks.

Newcastle are coming off a defeat at Anfield in mid-week. However, they were without star striker Alexander Isak who returns today along with midfielder Joelinton. Newcastle are close to being at full strength.

This is the team Eddie Howe has selected with quite a few changes.

Here is who Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has named. Yankuba Minteh gets the start at St. James’ Park.

Well done Onmeed. And a nice dinner too?

My choice is to watch with son and wife or go to town to meet the Limerick ( and surrounding area) Mags

I want to watch with the family but feel the need to be with other ( adult) fans too. It’s a tough one. And then of course the town will be full of red cnuts so….

After a frustrating loss in the cup, the weekends results have been disappointing so far. Those clubs who we are in competition with have generally had positive results and are maintaining momentum. Whereas we need to create some positive energy and whilst there will be few weeks between the next PL games, a couple of wins would improve the outlook.

NUFC have 13 wins 5 draws and 9 losses, ignoring the number of points and just comparing the wins to the other results, we have one win less than draws/losses. Looking at the table ManCity, despite their latest loss, in fourth are the first team that have equal results and should be something to target.

Whilst no one wants anything else but a win, actually achieving nothing but a positive result on Monday and then on 2nd April would definitely set up the momentum we desperately need. Plus these are the types of games which we have lately failed to turn up, against ’lesser’ teams, which would put that unwanted theory to bed. Especially when looking ahead to the remainder of the season.

To a certain extent the cup final is a side issue, whereas achieving 65 points by the end of the season has the potential to generate greater repercussions. Although winning the final is a fast track to qualifying for the Europa League, we are not able to build the squad without playing in an additional competition next season.

Perhaps that is just a case of looking too far ahead and we should limit ourselves to focusing on the immediate. But until we next play the results of other clubs just build on the current frustrations.

    What’s this we see ?
Arsenal throwing the match against manu to protect their CL hopes this season and give a fellow slimey six club a leg up ?
    Surely not.

Or. Why can’t we get free kicks and score from them ?

    So, priorities….

If we win tomorrow, we’re joint fifth, CL wide open.

But there’s that little matter of the cup and we’re running out of steam, people falling like flies. Paying, once more, for our success, by not bringing in new faces. Remember when we did the same and only brought in Anita? We then slid and slid.

Well, this time we brought in…. no one. For the third window in a row. Big big risk.

Priority? The cup. Should we lose Monday, we’re still in the mix. But then, it’s the confidence thing, should we lose.

    I don’t know man.

    Over to you Eddie.

    Crazy.
Yellow cards against West Ham don’t count for Cup Final ban. But a red card does

So if Gordon had been given yellow like Nunez was yesterday then neither would have been banned.

If Gordon had had a yellow then he would play. Yet VAR declined to direct the ref to give Nunez a red for a clear red which would have seen him banned.

Brown envelopes are back in vogue

    Matchday finally !!

Apart from recognising that we have a(nother) date with destiny next Sunday I’m going to try to now ignore it – as I hope the professionals (can) do

The one thing about being last on the weekend schedule of games is that we can see what a win now would brings us

Not an easy task of course and we need to stop them doing double over us

A win takes us from 9th to joint 5th with Man City and 2 points behind Chelsea and 4 behind Forest – so a big match as well as that other one

Teams around us like those 2 and Brighton, Bournemoth have some tricky fixtures coming up ( some playing eaxh other at top of table) so we need to take advantage and build momentum

OK we all know a draw away is usually considered not so bad ( and maybe we have to settle for that) but I would love it if we go there with the mindset of “let’s get 3 points”

The Hammers are in no man’s land – won’t get relegated but can’t make European competitions even now before Easter so will that give them less incentive or let them play freely?

Potter is making a difference to them but they are another team we owe for an earlier mugging ( like we did Brighton last time out)

If I’m honest I have mixed feelings about how well we might play given circumstances of key injuries and that other thing

Eddie might find team largely picks itself but he usually makes at least one odd call – let’s hope he gets it right

The other niggle I have is the preparation time – more than a week hasn’t always been the benefit on the training pitch that you would like and expect

All things considered I’m expecting not to get beat but will need 2 consistent good halves with all players totally focused to get the win – unless we mug them of course πŸ™‚

    magscar,
One of our more, how do you put it, contrarian bloggers once said there’s no such thing as a kind run of fixtures. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that according to Opta we had the fourth most difficult start over the first ten fixtures and that our 9 match wi ning streak came when our fixtures became ‘kinder’. We now enter a period where we only play three clubs in the top ten in our remaining fixtures. Surely we can capitalise on that and put another run together.
