Barnes, Isak, And Pope Start At West Ham

After a troubling run, Newcastle look to take a giant step at West Ham this evening. The Magpies were knocked out of the FA Cup last weekend at home to Brighton and have dropped to ninth in the league table.

However, a win at West Ham will see Newcastle jump to sixth in the table and just two points off fourth-placed Chelsea. Though on recent form, a brave few will be banking on three points in East London today.

Nevertheless, here is the team Eddie Howe has named for this potentially critical clash.

Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Bruno (C), Joelinton, Tonali, Murphy, Barnes, Isak

This is who Graham Potter has selected for the Hammers.

Areola, Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Cresswell, Scarles, Alvarez, Ward-Prowse, Soucek, Bowen (C), Kudus.

Howay The Lads!

Didn’t feel like good game management at the end, but we were better than the toothless opposition.

West ham were poor and not very competitive so we’ll take that.

Maybe 7/10 all round. But it was enough. And joint fifth in the table.

    No injuries.

Three big points. Can’t ask for much more.

    MOM, Kudus.

Love to see NUFC playing in a green and white kit as opposed to those claret and blue hoops. Whatever the kit tho’, Wilson is just stealing a living as a footballer.

Scousers will have a battle with PSG. Let’s see how they come out of that.

We’ve just put a tiger back in our tank but will need to up the energy for Sunday

Still, back in the right place to chase down a CL place.

West Ham never looked like scoring.
Good to see the athleticism of Tino on the left, but boy do we miss Hall !! Tino always coming on to his right foot when making the overlap. Plent to work on between him and Barnes if they’re going to be out 2 starters in the final.
    Great result in the circumstances.

If match ratings also included unbelievable touches, Isak would have been ranked higher. A good steady game played by the majority, showing strength and fortitude. Playmaking not very apparent and subs did not show much control, but a good win to move forward with.

Good away win… they all are.

    But…

How many breaks did we have to get a second goal in added time when they were pushing on only for a lousy pass to be made? 3,4,5?

Lpool would have taken at least one of them.

That’s the gulf in quality between us and them.

Doesn’t mean we can’t win the cup, but it will take some doing.

Agreed, we have a few players who lack composure when it really matters. Affects their decision making, but no shortage of commitment. I’m thinking Longy and Murphy. Good squad players but upgrades required. We were the better team and deserved the win, but could have made it easier on the fans at the end. If we’re a goal up on Sunday with 5 mins to play can you imagine the stress for the fans. Not sure I’ll be able to handle it. We need a 3 goal lead against 10 men for me to enjoy winning a trophy.

    My MOM…

    From the BBC…

Sandro Tonali has won all nine of his duels in this game.

The last Newcastle player to contest more duels in a Premier League game while winning 100% of them was Chancel Mbemba vs Stoke in October 2015 (10/10).

Seriously, if we are a goal up with 15 minutes to play on Sunday it will be the longest 15 minutes of my life.

It’s 51 years since I first went to Wembley in 1974 when we lost 3-0 to Lpool and in four visits since we’ve lost every time and only scored one goal and that was a semi-final against Chelsea.

I know for sure that if we win I’ll break down in tears, and I’m sure I won’t be alone.

After being to all those finals, you wouldn`t be human if you didn`t break down in tears if we won mate. On the game itself all our players will need to try and keep their emotions under control as it means so much to them and our fans, in contrast to Liverpool who have seen it all before, it will feel like just another day at the office for them Bill, as you will understand mate.

Big Joe that’s why I gave him my man of the match – he got stuck in and bullied their midfield. Yes Tonali was class but sometimes you need someone to do the dirty work.
Strange performance good in parts awful in others but a great lift for the final and no injuries.
Bruno you can see why he was made captain – tonight’s post match was brilliant / his love for Newcastle United our supporters and his honest opinion with a cheeky grin – infectious

Hacks are now saying that Arsenal have given up on signing Isak.
Apparently they want Bruno instead !

A balanced view is that the Mackems will sign Rice and Arteta will be sacked then join manu when Amorim is sacked.

Clearly some are smoking substances they can’t handle.

Great win in London last night.

    A really important victory.

The best compliment I could give is I was never worried once about WH. We controlled the game.

Don’t understand others who think it was a bad performance…? It certainly wasn’t bad and can we say any win is a bad performance and away from home? Job done in my eyes and i hope it gives the lads a big boost for this coming weekend.

Tonali and Bruno superb in the middle once again. I’d say Tonali just pipped Bruno to MOTM.
