Newcastle have a golden opportunity at St. James’ Park to stake a Champions League claim today. A victory and Newcastle will eclipse Manchester City into third with just two matches remaining in the campaign.
It won’t be easy as today’s foe is Chelsea, who are also pushing for a top five finish. The Blues bring a five match winning streak into this match after booking a place in the Europa Conference League final a few days ago.
This is the team Eddie Howe has named with Dan Burn likely moving to left back for the injured Kieran Trippier.

Comment #2no irishrob, gordon is playing a floating no 10, just behind isak, he will cause more damage from that postion then on the wing and anyways we have barnes and murphy there as well, the midfield is well covered for this match, the 2 wingers will cut into midfield as well makes it very tight in there

Comment #3Tino and Murphy as wingbacks I’d think.

Comment #4Looks like 4-2-3-1 with Gordon in at 10.
V interesting – presume the plan is to press the living sh*te out of them as they like to play out from the back. Burn at LB a bit of a worry ofc but he’s been immense this season so let’s not immediately jump on his back before he’s kicked a ball eh?
Also Lascelles back on the bench!

Comment #9Caicedo is playing RB for Chelsea, according to The BBC. I wonder how accurate that can be.
They also have Gordon playing on the left of a midfield 3. (Doubtful)
A bit of a curveball from both managers.

Comment #10That can be any formation we want it to be, with dare I say it Mr Tough, Murphy dropping in to RWB as we go in to three at the back. Very attacking as well

Comment #15Can certainly see this formation fluidly changing to five at the back – especially if we get a couple goals.
It feels a bit like the gods are against us today but that’s exactly how it felt in the lead up to the cup final.

Comment #16Nashers I’ve literally said I agree with tnt sports. I think Gordon will play 10, tino burn lb.
Think you read posts from earlier than that.
Either way only 2 in midfield with Gordon probably covering without the ball. But the midfield is a worry.

Comment #19Java it cabt be tino and Murphy at wb because that would mean 5 at the back.
Then where does the wing forwards fit in? There would be an insane hole in midfield.
It will be 4231

Comment #20RAJ, they sure do. The BBC’s biggest blunder, from my recollection, was having McTominay playing as a number 10 with Ronaldo behind him (For Man U). Obviously, a few years back, but an almost criminal mistake.
I wasn’t aware Caciedo had played RB this season. Seems strange with James sitting on the bench. Gordon will certainly give him a run-out if they are facing each other.

Comment #21Jim there isn’t going to be much of a midfield there to protect him today. Only 2. Unless Howe has done something that no one has called which is play Gordon at 7 in the left midfield and that allows us to play as we normally play and gives burn protection with pace from Gordon.

Comment #22Now I think about it I don’t think.ive ever seen how play a no.10 role for us. Would he really totally change up how we play in such a big game. Doubtful now I think about it
I’m changing again, I now think he’s going to play our usual 433, with Gordon at 7 to cover burn.
Tino back to the right, Barnes at left forward, Murphy right.
Final prediction burn left, Gordon 7, 433

Comment #23Peckham, if we get a few goals ye then I think you have a point it’s a team that can easily go to 5, but we’d want to have the game won by then. Starting with 5 at the back is absolute suicide though and makes the least sense out of any formation

Comment #26When all the talking has subsided it`s time to stand up and be counted,
i`m confident ever Toon player will leave it all on the pitch today, you can never guarantee a victory in the premier league, but if the Toon can produce anywhere near the best version of themselves i feel confident we will be victorious.
Oh and get stuck into them Newcastle United.

Comment #31Will be very exciting to see Gordon playing centrally behind the striker. But at the end of the day, as long as we win the formation is not important. Just a point of discussion if we don’t play well.
