Blue Haven Boy's Life As A Toon Supporter

Here is another member's story of their life as a Toon supporter.

Over to you Blue Haven Boy...

My time as a Magpie fan started when I and my then girlfriend (now my wife of 50 years) were crossing the Tyne by train and we saw a bridge that looked suspiciously like one we had seen many times before.

Well, I thought. That will help if we get homesick.

My girl's dad was a Geordie submariner in WW2 and he went on leave in Sydney and never got back on the boat. Consequently he never set foot in England from that day till death nor spoke or wrote to anyone including family.

My first match at SJP was in Sept '75 and it was the days of Jolly John Tudor, Frank Clark, Alan Kennedy and the two Terrys, Hibbert and McDermott. Not to forget Mr Bob Moncur and Supermac, who looked as if he had arrived on John Wayne's horse.

I was able to get a job in the cellar of the Royal Turk's Head Hotel and remember being able to watch the football highlights before closing time (was it" match of the day" or" on the ball" back then?

My wife's cousin and I were standing at one end of the ground (I don't remember which end but we were in there with 38000 other hardy souls) and we were watching a cup tie in which Newcastle were playing all over the visitors.

Slowly the chant went up. I thought they were shouting NINE TEN NINE TEN and I said to Mike that they better get a move on to get nine or ten goals.

He looked at me like I was a complete  idiot and said it wasn't NINE TEN, it was UNITED. I thought we all spoke the queen's English but apparently not.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 We stayed in Newcastle for a year before moving south to London and joining up with my brother and his Irish wife but I never lost my love of all things geordie but I do have a soft spot for Brentford FC.

We have been back to Newcastle a few times in the last ten years and stay at the Snowy Owl Hotel over in Cramlington But haven't been to a match as tickets are very hard to come by.

Probably won't be over there again as age marches on so I do rely on your good self Colin and all the bloggers and lurkers to keep me in the loop as most games over here are on in the middle of the night.

Speaking of the middle of the night, whatever happened to Regan and his night time music clips?

:) Blue Haven Boy hearing NINE TEN when the crowd were singing UNITED. Corka!

Replying to TKG and Wor B I could think of worse people to be related to as I enjoy reading posts from both of you, especially Wor B's warped ( no that's not right) weird (that either) let's settle on different sense of humour.

Good story Blue (Aussie accent), especially the mention of the two most famous bridges in the world! If you’re related to Wor B any £10 future payments will be waived win win eh.

Thinking about it my old man had a cousin who mysteriously vanished during WW2. Possibility related as well, I wonder. 🤔
