Lewis Hall's Progress: From Patience To Prominence

When Lewis Hall first arrived from Chelsea in 2023 for a fee of £28M and a total package worth £35m, he was a "project.". No longer a project, Hall is now up there with the best.
The Turning Point: 2024 vs. 2026
Lewis Hall first arrived at Newcastle for a fee that wasn't small change by any means for a teenage player with only a handful of first team games behind him.
Initially signed on loan but with an obligation to buy some fans weren't convinced it was good business with Eddie Howe famously opting for the reliability of Dan Burn, leaving Lewis with very few minutes to shine during his initial loan period.
Hall later reflected on this period as "mentally difficult," often being substituted in his rare starts.
Eddie Howe made it known there was work to do, especially on his defensive game, before Hall was ready for regular first team action.
Fast-forward to March 2026, and the transformation is almost complete.
Hall is no longer a luxury prospect; he is a tactical necessity, proven by his superb display in handling the threat of Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, one of the world's best players.
Just look at these stats from last night's game;
The Duel: Up against Lamine Yamal (the 2025 Ballon d'Or runner-up), Hall was elite. Statistics showed that Yamal failed to dribble past Hall even once during the 90 minutes.
The Dual Threat: Hall wasn't just a defensive wall; he was Newcastle's primary playmaker, creating 5 chances (the most of any player on the pitch) .
The Verdict: Wayne Rooney described his performance as "fantastic," noting his maturity in handling the world's most dangerous winger.
The only influence on the game that Yamal had last night from was from the penalty spot - and if Hall had been in goal I bet he would have saved the spot kick.
Tactical Analysis: The Modern Full-Back
Hall’s progress is defined by his versatility.
Having grown up as a midfielder, he brings a technical security to the left-back role that Newcastle previously lacked.
Progressive Passing: He currently maintains an 85.8% pass completion rate in the Premier League, ranking among the top-tier full-backs for progressive carries and "overlapping" runs.
Defensive Steel: The "softness" that critics pointed to in 2024 has vanished. In the 2025/26 season, he has won 58.9% of his duels and recorded nearly 100 recoveries, showing he has fully adapted to the physical demands of Howe’s high-press system.
Key Stats: 2025/26 Season (To Date)
Metric | Stat (All Comps) |
Appearances | 37 |
Rating (Avg) | 7.09 |
Chances Created | 16 (PL) |
Tackle Success | 65% |
Pass Accuracy | 85% |
Hall has to be a certainty for the World Cup
Lewis made his senior England debut in November 2024 and has since become a regular in the squad. Only injury has prevented him from adding to his caps.
With Thomas Tuchel looking for a technically gifted, attack-minded left-back for the 2026 World Cup, Hall’s performance against Barcelona cannot have gone unnoticed by the England manager.
If Lewis Hall can handle Lamine Yamal, he can handle any player that the World Cup can throw up against him. He has to be the No.1 contender to start in the left back spot.
Eddie Howe and his coaches take massive credit
Eddie Howe has transformed the careers of a host of Newcastle players, turning them from rough cut into polished diamonds.
Now, Lewis Hall is sparkling brighter than any of Eddie's previous illuminations.
We have an absolute gem of player at SJP and the only concern is Eddie and us fans aren't the only ones who know it. A good World Cup could see his stock hit the roof.
Along with Tino Livramento we could have the England full back pairing for many a year to come - let's hope all of that time is spent in the black and white shirt of the Toon.
What do you think of wor Lewis?

Massive Decision Looms For Eddie Howe | NUFC Blog
Hall is said to be on approximately 30k a week and is contracted until 2029. There is reports saying the club will look to tie him down soon on a new deal. Gotta be offering him at least 100k a week id imagine.
Should we do the "impossible " at the nou camp .
Newcastle v atletico madrid
Arsenal v bodo glimt
Semi final one gets one of those 2 winners against each other.
The other side
Bayern munich v real madrid
PSG V Liverpool id say
I personally reckon PSG would play bayern in the semis.
Bayern v newcastle final 🙃
RE: Lochinvar's comment earlier
Not only are we the 3rd most likely to progress of the 6 EPL teams, but we were the only one of that group to have held a lead in the first leg. We could have also been the only 1st leg winner if - it wasn't for the last kick penalty.
Hard to imagine prior to this round of games kicking off.
It will be extremely tough next week, but we can do it; especially if a certain Mr Hall keeps Yamal in his back pocket again !
The only thing that surprises me about lewis Hall, is that the media and pundits haven't got him sold to one of the 5 in the summer.
