It's Back: And Jaissle Has Two Days To Get Ready For Liverpool

The 26/27 seasons kicks off tonight at 8pm as Arsenal host promoted Coventry.

The opening fixtures end on Sunday at 4.30pm when Newcastle kick off against Liverpool at the start of what could be a defining season for Jaissle and his squad.

18 Games Without A PL Win

The last time Newcastle beat Liverpool in the PL was way back in 2015 when McClaren's side won 2-0. Since then it's been dismal; 13 defeats and 5 draws.

Only the Carabou Cup win has broken that run but, that apart, it's eleven years since the Toon tasted victory in a league game - a run of 18 games.

For Jaissle to end that run after just a couple of weeks as boss, with a squad shorn of it's key players, plus no Tino, Jo or Willock, and barely christened young signings as back up... that would be one step short of a miracle.

Well, young Matthias has just two days to get his players walking on the water of the Mersey and sinking the scousers. Can he do it?

Indifferent Pre-Season Form From Both Clubs

Newcastle only won one of their last four friendlies and that was against ten man Valencia.

Liverpool surrendered 2–0 leads in consecutive pre-season defeats: they lost 4–2 to Leeds and then 3–2 to Monaco.

Iraola subsequently admitted Liverpool had struggled to sustain their level across 90 minutes.

It's easy to forget that it isn't just Jaissle who is new to the job, so is Iraola.

Managing Liverpool is a massive step up for the former Bournemouth boss and we've seen plenty of previous managers moving to the Big 6 clubs and finding those steps too hard to climb.

Iraola will want to implement his own style of play, but when you have top players and big ego's that isn't a given.

Throwing away two goal leads in successive games hints at a weakness in controlling a game, defensive issues ,and a lack of fitness late on.

OK they were friendlies, but if nothing else Liverpool aren't coming into the game on the back of thumping wins and they aren't the title winning side of two seasons ago.

Liverpool will still be favourites but the emotions and atmosphere of the day; Jaissle's first Pl game at SJP, young lads debuts, the KK tribute, and the Isak factor, could yet have an influence on the players.

It definitely will fire up the crowd. It will bedlam inside the Cathedral on The Hill.

Both managers will want a good start...

But the fact is Iraola and his Liverpool team need one far more than we do.

If Newcastle can get the first goal anything can happen.

Matthias Jaissle has two days left to plot Liverpool's downfall.

Don't be surprised if he pulls a near miracle off as KK watches from his seat in Heaven.

KK would love it, just love it.

And, of course, so would we fans.
