Liverpool v Newcastle United: Match Preview

After the tremendous performance away to PSG the current Champions of Europe, Eddie Howe's Newcastle United travel to Anfield to take on the Champions of England in Saturday's 8pm Premier League clash.

Both teams have injury and PL form issues

Newcastle will be without Tino Livramento, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes is doubtful.

If Bruno doesn't start Newcastle will have to break their nine game run without a win in his absence if they are to take the three points at Anfield.

In any event, Newcastle haven't won in the league at Anfield since 1994, making it our worst away ground for a positive result. Add in our poor record on the road this season and it's no surprise that the bookies make Liverpool strong favourites.

After a run of four successive wins Eddie Howe's team have taken just one point from their previous two PL games, without scoring, and missed the opportunity to move above Liverpool and into a top five place.

Newcastle have dropped down to ninth in the division as one of four teams on 33 points, leaving them five adrift of Manchester United in the coveted fourth spot.

Liverpool have injury problems, especially in defence, with Jeremy Frimpong joining Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones who are all potential no-starters. Alexander Isak is out with an injury but that won't stop the Geordie away supporters from berating him throughout the game.

Arne Slot's side are on a winless Premier League sequence of five matches, four draws and a defeat, a run which has taken them down to sixth place in the PL. Not since 1954 have Liverpool failed to win in their first six league games of a calendar year.

Liverpool have also been plagued with last minute goals costing points, although they inflicted a home defeat on Newcastle with a goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time earlier this season.

29 games since Newcastle last won at Anfield

The 3-2 loss to Liverpool in this season's home game marked Newcastle's 18th straight league game without victory against Liverpool, who are also unbeaten in 29 consecutive Premier League home matches against the Magpies.

Can Eddie Howe and the lads put that record to the sword and come away from Anfield with a win? A performance on the level of the one against PSG would definitely help.

The big question is; will Eddie stick with the same tactical line up from Wednesday's game or will he revert to 4-3-3? Liverpool are without key defenders and Eddie may well decide that reverting to a front three with the pace of Barnes, Wissa and Gordon could be the key to finally coming away with a victory.

Liverpool go into the game on the back of a thumping 6-0 win against our CL play off opponents Qarabag and will be looking to get their first win of 2026 under their belt.

I don't think they will...

And my usual fiver is going on a 2-1 win to the Toon.

On now looking through the most recent comments and as I've posted before our overarching problem is PSR and it's restrictions on growing our revenues faster than we currently can - it's not simply Eddie as some might want to take from my last post

Any manager would struggle with the brakes applied to our development as they are being

OK a different manager might arguably get more from the squad or have different ideas on our development to put to PIF and board but sooner or later the reality of PSR etc will catch up - its what , intended or not it does .

We pay the 8th highest wages in PL ( reckoned by many to be…

Lewis Miley didn't make the pitch last night.

Was that due to fatigue post PSG ?

The fragility of the size and depth of our squad over 4 competitions is evident to see

Missing Tino, Bruno, Joe Linton, Miley against any side including the scousers is bound to be an issue.

Pope is a contradiction. Nightmare decisions in some games then penalty save against PSG. Last night not great and then a howler at the end. I'm not sure he's ever fully recovered from his shoulder injury as his concentration is wayward. Time for a big keeper who dominates his box.

Why didn't we man mark Etitike ? It was obvious that he was the main threat. Only consolation that…
