Matthias Jaissle: First SJP Press Conference

Before the conference started Matthias shook the hand of every one of the attending media and that is the first time I have seen that from a new manager - it always helps to get the press on your side, especially at the start of what could be a difficult period.

Confident, intelligent and with a definite aura

In my time I've watched countless new managers making their first statements or interviews when they take the helm - and some don't impress at all. Amorim for one.

However, just like when Eddie Howe was appointed, Jaissle immediately came across as confident, focused and a definite born leader.

Managers can have all the coaching skills in the world, but if they aren't genuine leadership material then they sharp lose control of the players and the inevitable rot starts to set in.

That's why so many coaches fail when they step up into management.

So... I was more concentrated on his body language, tone of voice and persona than I was on what he actually said. Talk, after all, is cheap.

That's not to say I wasn't impressed with what he did have to say, and especially how he handled some of the difficult curved balls that were thrown at him.

Has he been set a target of European qualification this season? The club has ambition he replied, and so have I, but it is not right to promise anything. Good answer.

Does he think there is a place for Woltemade? He has spoken to Nick at length and told him last season is history and to look forward not back. Again, good answer.

What about new signings? Jaissle said he and everyone at the club knows the priority positions to fill and also that changes - in the squad and team - will be made. He didn't give a timeline but the inference is clear - he is his own man and will make tough decisions.

Matthias also seemed genuinely thrilled to be taking the helm at NUFC and said he and his training team were in awe of SJP and can't wait to see and hear the atmosphere on a packed match day - he also knows fans already have song for him.

In short, I'm impressed

You don't get a second chance to make a first impression and Jaislle for me nailed it in his first SJP press conference.

There were no big promises, just smart intelligent answers to the questions he was asked.

What I also took from the presser was that this is a guy who has supreme self confidence and belief in himself, but without any hint of arrogance.

Matthias may well face some tough times ahead, but I doubt he is the type of person to panic, make hasty decisions and buckle under the pressure.

He's given me a dose of confidence and excitement about the coming season.

Us fans needed that injection and I think we are in safe hands.

And... my guess is that the squad will already be feeling that too.
