Northumbria Police Refuse to Review Sunderland Derby Travel Restrictions
Northumbria Police have defended the controversial travel restrictions imposed on Sunderland supporters for December's Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park, insisting there are no grounds to reconsider the decision.
The Premier League fixture takes place on Sunday 6 December at 2pm, with Sunderland fans required to travel to and from Newcastle on official club coaches.
The arrangements have attracted criticism from supporter groups representing both clubs.
Why Are Police Insisting on Compulsory Coach Travel?
In correspondence made public by Sunderland's Red and White Army Supporters' Trust, Chief Inspector Dean Hood explained that serious safety concerns arose during the previous derby at St James' Park.
Police reported incidents involving bottles and other objects being thrown, along with fireworks discharged close to police horses in crowded areas.
Officers believe repeating the previous travel arrangements would expose supporters to unacceptable risks.
Although acknowledging that the overwhelming majority of fans behave responsibly, Northumbria Police say they have not identified a suitable alternative that addresses their safety concerns.
Sunderland Want Further Talks
Despite the police position, Sunderland AFC have indicated they want discussions to continue.
The club is reportedly exploring alternatives, including subsidised organised travel, that could provide a safer and more convenient arrangement without compulsory coach transport.
Both the Newcastle United Supporters Trust and Sunderland supporter representatives have questioned whether the restrictions are proportionate and why supporters were not more closely consulted.
The away allocation is also expected to be reduced to approximately 2,200 tickets.
For now, the compulsory coach arrangements remain in place, although Sunderland are continuing to seek a solution acceptable to supporters and the authorities.
